B. Priming/Activating Prior Knowledge

1. Drill
Class, which of the following are linear equation
in one variable?
a. 2x = 25 a. 2x = 25 (YES)
b. 𝒙𝟐 = 24 b. 𝒙𝟐 = 24 (NO)
c. 3 (y – 5) = 4y + 7 c. 3 (y – 5) = 4y + 7 (YES)
d. 7x – 2 = 5y + 1 d. 7x – 2 = 5y + 1 (NO)
e. 5x – 3 + 4(x-1) e. 5x – 3 + 4(x-1) (NO)
Very good!

2. Review
Let us recall the last topic we discussed yesterday. Will
you be able to recall the main topic?
Students will raise their hands.
Sir, the topic we discussed yesterday was about linear
That’s correct! equation in one variable.
Who can give the definition of linear equation in one
variable?
Linear equation in one variable is an equation that can
be written in the form.
ax + b = c
That’s right! where a, b, and c are constant and a ≠ 0
Who can give me an example of a linear equation in
one variable?
Students give their answers.
1. 2x – 1 = 0
2. -5x = 10 + x
3. 3x + 8 = 2

Very good class!

And a Linear equation in one variable is a first degree
equation because the highest power on the variable is
only one.
C. Lesson Development
1. Motivation
Class, how do we really solve for a linear equation?
To solve a linear equation, we need to get the variable
alone on one side of the equation.
Example:
x + 9 = -7
The only way to isolate “x” is to get rid of the 9.
You have to apply the Addition Property of Equality Students listen
(APE), it states that whatever you add on the left side of
the equation must also be added in the right side of the
equation.
Add the additive inverse (opposite) of 9 to both sides of
the equation.

So… it become x + 9 + (-9) = -7 + (-9)

Then you well be able to solve for “x”, x = -16.

Now, how to know if you answer is correct?

All you have to do is to substitute the answer to the
given equation. If it gives the balance answer then your
answer is correct. Example
x + 9 = -7
-16 + 9 = -7
-7 = -7
2nd Example:
9x = 27
Now in this case you have to apply the Multiplication
Property of Equality (MPE), it states that whatever you
multiply on the left side of the equation must also be
multiplied to the right side of the equation as well.
Again for us to maintain that balance.

By multiplying the multiplicative inverse (reciprocal) of

9.

𝟏 𝟏
So… it become 9x (𝟗) = 27 (𝟗)
𝟐𝟕
Then you well be able to solve for “x”, x = 𝟗
; x=3

Again, to know if your answer is correct.

All you have to do is to substitute the answer to the
given equation. If it gives the balance answer then your
answer is correct. Example
9x = 27
9 (3) = 27
27 = 27

2. Analysis
What did we do in our two examples?
Sir, we use the addition property of equality (APE) in
both side of the equation to get rid of the 9, to get the
Very good! value of x.
How about the second example?
Sir, we use the multiplication property of equality
(MPE) in both side of the equation to solve the value of
x.
That’s right!
Let’s do this another example.
1. -35 + x = 7
2. 14 = y – 8
3. 6x + 14 + 2x = -10
For number one, how do we evaluate?
What should we do first? Sir, we have to use the addition property of equality to
get rid of -35.
Correct!
Can someone show us how to do that?
A student will called to answer.
-35 + (35) + x = 7 + 35
x = 42
That’s correct!
Now for number 2, 14 = y – 8
Who would like to try the same steps? A student will called to answer.
14 + 8 = y – 8 + (8)
22 = y

And for the last number, 6x + 14 + 2x = -10 A student will called to answer.
6x + 14 + 2x = -10
14 + 8x = -10
14 + (-14) + 8x = -10 + (-14)
1 1
( )8x = -24 ( )
8 8
x = -3

3. Abstraction
Now class, in solving linear equation in one variable,
what are the steps we need to consider.
1. In solving linear equation in one variable, we
have to get the variable alone on one side of
the equation.
2. Use the addition property of equality (APE) or
multiplication property of equality (MPE)
Very good!

4. Application
Now that you already know how to solve the linear
equation in one variable, we will be having a group
activity. I will divide you into two groups. Each group
will choose their leaders. The leader will be the one
who can ask me about the activity and he/she will be
the responsible for dividing the tasks between the
members of the group.
Each group will be given an activity envelope where you
will find the materials for the activity and the
expressions of your group will be going to evaluate.
Now, the group activity will be scored according to the
standards.
