Infinite series, introduction to elliptical function, elliptical, integrals, ordinary and partial differential
equations. solution of differential equations in series. Numerical analysis including numerical
integration. Empirical formula and curve fitting.
Introduction to solution of equation. Determinants and matrices. Introduction to factor analysis.
Analysis of data, concept of probability. Discrete and continuous distribution. Test of significance.
Sample size. Analysis of variance. Operating characteristic curve. Control charts, co-relation and
regression analysis.

SYLLABUS:
The tensile, bending and torsional rigidity of fibres and their determination. Elements of yarn
geometry, geometry of helix and its application to yarn structure. Geometry of folded yarns. Yarn
diameter and density.
Effect of fibre properties and their geometrical configuration on the tensile, bending, flexural and
torque properties of yarn. Design of yarn structure for certain functional theories of yarn strength.
Theoretical analysis of yarn irregularity. Fibre migration characteristics of spun yarn and continuous
filament yarns. Blend irregularities. Concept of elongation balance. Effect of properties of constituent
fibres and blend composition on the behaviour of composite yarns.

Introduction to natural and synthetic polymers. Essential characters of fibre forming polymers. Step
growth (condensation ) Polymerisation. Kinetics and static of linear step wise Polymerisation. Kinetics,
mechanism, control and distribution of molecular weights in the condensation Polymerisation of nylon
and polyesters. Chain growth (addition) Polymerisation with special reference to polyolefins and
acrylonitrile based polymers, Kinetics, initiator efficiency, auto acceleration. Chain transfer, retarders
and inhibitors. Ionic and coordination Polymerisation. Kinetics of ionic and stereospecific
polymerizations.
Technique of polymerizations : Bulk solution, suspension and emulsion polymerizations. Polymer
solution, Thermodynamics of polymer solution, its approximations and limitations. Measurement of
molecular weight and size and group analysis, Osmometry, Light scattering, ultra centrifugation and
viscometry.

Mechanism of deformation in fibres. Principles of elasticity. Visco elasticity, Stress - strain relation.
Creep, stress relaxation, Time - temperature effects and dynamic mechanical properties. Quantitative
theoretical interpretation of mechanical behaviour. Thermodynamic analysis of mechanical
deformation. Reaction rate theory applied to the relative moment of the long chain molecules in fibres.
Anisotropy. Determination of poisson ratios, bending and torsional rigidity of fibres and their
determination.

Molecular architecture in polymers, glass transition temperature, elements of chain statistics,
requirements of fibre forming polymers, the crystallisation of polymers, the concept of order in
polymers, crystallinity, orientation, physical structure of natural and man made fibres.
Physical methods for investigation fibre structure :X - ray diffraction, Infra red spectroscopy,
Differential scanning colorimetry, Optical and electron microscopy.

PRODUCTION OF MAN - MADE FIBRES

SYLLABUS:
General principle of spinning : Flow of fluid through a capillary, die - swell, melt, dry and wet spinning.
Melt spinning process : Melt extrusion, spinning conditions such as spinneret size, rate of extrusion,
spinning stretch and it's effect on filament structure and properties with special reference to polyamide
and polyester fibres.
Polyamide fibres: Introduction to important polyamides, polyamidation reaction. Synthesis of nylon 6
and nylon 66. Production of Newer nylons.
Polyester Fibres :Detailed studies of polyesters. Esterification and polycondensation reaction,
Industrial process for fibre production of PET and co-polymers.
Viscose Rayon : Detailed studies of regenerated cellulose. Ageing of Alkali cellulose, cellulose
xanthate and xanthation reaction. The ripening process and its effect on molecular structure.
Coagulation bath on fibre properties. Self crimping of fibres. High tenacity and polynosic fibres.
Fibres from addition polymers : Polyethylene, polypropylene and fibre based on polyacrylonytrile,
copolymers for fibre production, polyvinyl alcohol fibres, Elastomeric fibres of spandex type ,
Bicomponent fibres.

Drawing and its effect on orientation and crystallization, second order transition and its significance in
drawing, twisting of continuous filaments, draw-twisting, uptwisting, two-for-one twisting.
Principles of setting of fibres and fabrics. Heat setting of nylon 66, PET, PAN, Polypropylene etc.
Equipment used for setting tow to staple and tow to yarn conversion. Production of staple yarns on
various systems. Problems of blending, static problem and remedies. Hamburger's Theory.

of textured yarn. Characterization of textured yarns. Stuffer Box crimping, Edge crimping , and other
methods of texturising thermoplastic yarns. Textured yarn properties and fabric characteristics.
Principles of Draw textured yarns. Principle of air bulking and properties of textured yarns.
Texturising of non-thermoplastic yarns, cross-linking and effect of process variables on properties of
textured yarns. Texturising with aid of solvents. Yarn characteristics, Morphological changes induced
by machine properties of textured yarns.

Engineering fibres such as high-performance fibres like carbon fibres, Aramid fibres, inorganic fibres
like glass, silicon and boron fibre, Optical fibre, conductive fibres, ceramic fibre, gel-spun high density
polyethylene and other modified fibres.
