SYLLABUS:
Introduction to natural and synthetic polymers. Essential characters of fibre forming polymers. Step
growth (condensation ) Polymerisation. Kinetics and static of linear step wise Polymerisation. Kinetics,
mechanism, control and distribution of molecular weights in the condensation Polymerisation of nylon
and polyesters. Chain growth (addition) Polymerisation with special reference to polyolefins and
acrylonitrile based polymers, Kinetics, initiator efficiency, auto acceleration. Chain transfer, retarders
and inhibitors. Ionic and coordination Polymerisation. Kinetics of ionic and stereospecific
polymerizations.
Technique of polymerizations : Bulk solution, suspension and emulsion polymerizations. Polymer
solution, Thermodynamics of polymer solution, its approximations and limitations. Measurement of
molecular weight and size and group analysis, Osmometry, Light scattering, ultra centrifugation and
viscometry.

SYLLABUS:
Mechanism of deformation in fibres. Principles of elasticity. Visco elasticity, Stress - strain relation.
Creep, stress relaxation, Time - temperature effects and dynamic mechanical properties. Quantitative
theoretical interpretation of mechanical behaviour. Thermodynamic analysis of mechanical
deformation. Reaction rate theory applied to the relative moment of the long chain molecules in fibres.
Anisotropy. Determination of poisson ratios, bending and torsional rigidity of fibres and their
determination.
SYLLABUS:
Molecular architecture in polymers, glass transition temperature, elements of chain statistics,
requirements of fibre forming polymers, the crystallisation of polymers, the concept of order in
polymers, crystallinity, orientation, physical structure of natural and man made fibres.
Physical methods for investigation fibre structure :X - ray diffraction, Infra red spectroscopy,
Differential scanning colorimetry, Optical and electron microscopy.

Drawing and its effect on orientation and crystallization, second order transition and its significance in
drawing, twisting of continuous filaments, draw-twisting, uptwisting, two-for-one twisting.
Principles of setting of fibres and fabrics. Heat setting of nylon 66, PET, PAN, Polypropylene etc.
Equipment used for setting tow to staple and tow to yarn conversion. Production of staple yarns on
various systems. Problems of blending, static problem and remedies. Hamburger's Theory.
