How to Pass the Neuro-Psychiatric Exam:

The Neuro-Psychiatric Examination tests the mental stability, adaptability and psychological functioning of
applicants before they are being recruited into service. The purpose of the exam is to filter applicants if they are
really suitable for the uniformed services of the government. It is one of the most decisive parts of the recruitment
process in the PNP, BFP, BJMP, BuCor and all the branches of the AFP. In fact, only 25% of the applicants pass the
Neuro-Psychiatric exam, making it the most dreaded part of the application process.

The Neuro-Psychiatric Exam is comprised of two parts- the written and the personal interview. It includes a 35-item
Aptitude (Adaptation) Test, Guilford Zimmerman Temperament Survey, Applicant Risk Profiler, The Industrial
Sentence Completion Test, Work Environment Preference Schedule (WEPS), Hand Test, and the “Drawing”. Sounds
scary, right? Well, here are some tips and pieces of advice to help you pass this crucial part of your application.
Please read on.

6 Important Tips to Pass the Neuro-Psychiatric Exam

Are you still searching for ways on how to successfully hurdle this important part of your application? Check these
important tips on how to pass the Neuro-Psychiatric Exam like a boss.

1. Follow instructions

In every exam, following the instructions is as important as knowing the right answer to every question. Knowing
how to follow instructions is a good indicator that you will be a good policeman, fireman, jail officer, or a soldier as
these services require utmost compliance to instructions. When you are told to write your name in block capitals,
do it exactly as you are told.

2. Manage your time during the exam

Like what I’ve said earlier, the Aptitude or what we call the IQ test is composed of 35 questions. You have to answer
all these questions in only 15 minutes. That means you only have two minutes to answer each item. The proctors
are strict regarding the time limit so never think that they will give you time extension. The trick is to answer the
easy questions first then go back to difficult items in case you still have time. This way, you can maximize the time
and increase your chances of completing the test.

3. Be consistent with your answers

Be mindful of your answers in every question of the exam. Always remember your answer in a particular question
because you will be asked similar and related questions in the next following items. You have to be always consistent
with your answers. Inconsistent answers may indicate that you are untruthful and just telling lies.

4. Learn how to draw

When I say learn how to draw, it does not mean you have to be like Michaelangelo or Da Vinci. If you are told to
draw people, do not draw stick figures. Draw people with complete parts like ears, eyes, hairs, fingers, and the likes.
Draw them with happy faces. Make evident distinctions between male and female e.g., mustache for male and long
hair for female. After that, you describe each drawing or make a story of it in 4-5 sentences. Some of the concepts
included here are tricky, and everything being drawn could mean something to the psychologists, therefore, be
careful.

5. Hone your English skills

Sometimes, the exam may include essay exercises. The purpose is to evaluate the incident reporting skills of the
applicants. Practice your English writing skills, be precise and pay attention to the grammar rules.

6. Prepare for the interview

The final part of the exam is the one-on-one interview with a psychologist to assess how you will present yourself
under pressure. Answer all the question with wit, consistency, and fluency. Do not make unnecessary body and hand
movements or gestures during the interview. Be snappy and stand firm when talking. Lastly, always be humble.

To wrap it up

The neuro-psychiatric test wants to know if you have a mindset of an average person. Do not pretend that you are
an extraordinary one and just be yourself. Be consistent on your answers, bring out the good in yourself and do not
show any violence in your words. Lastly, never leave anything unanswered. Those unanswered questions might
determine the result of the neuro-psych either you are RECOMMENDED or NOT RECOMMENDED. Good luck and
may the odds be in your favor.

How to Pass the Neuro-Psychiatric Exam (Specific)

One of the most crucial stages in the police recruitment program is the Pneuro-Psychiatric Exam. Almost ¾ or 75
percent of the police applicants get denied because of failing the Pneuro-Psychiatric exams. This is done to filter
applicants if they are really suitable for police work. Behavioral and sociability is measured in this process. The
exam is divided into two levels.

The written exam -where police applicants are given with test questionnaires. Your answers on items on the
questionnaire is actually calculated. In order to get a good score in this type of exam, you have to bring out the
natural goodness in yourself. Most police agencies use personal behavior and psychological and IQ measurement
questionnaires to assess psychiatric illness and Intelligence level.

1. Be consistent with your answers.

For example:
In item number 1.You like talking to public gatherings and social events?
a. Yes b. No ---You answered, Yes. You have to remember your answer in this item because in the next following
questions ,you will be ask similar and related questions.
Item number 69.I am shy and don’t like to participate in social gatherings.

a.Yes b.NO .In this case, you should answer, NO, because you have to be consistent with your answer. It may also
indicate you are untruthful if you answered, yes.
Your answers should also display natural goodness in you as a person. But, always remember be consistent with
your answers:

Another Example:
Item number 13. I am sad when I see a bird with broken wings.- You should answer, YES.
Item number 55.I like to shoot birds and haunt animals. You should answer, NO to justify that you are telling the
truth when you answered item number 13. I hope this make sense.

2. Follow instruction carefully: During the test, it is always important to follow instructions. Knowing how to follow
instructions is a good indicator that you will be a good police man given that following orders is a critical issue in
the police force. When you are told to write your plank number in the upper right side of the folder, do it exactly
as you are told.
3. Drawing Section. Police applicants are told to draw persons, Male and female. This is done to see the
perspective of the person to another. Some of the concept included here are tricky, and everything being drawn
could mean something to the psychologists, therefore, be careful.
Here are the tips in the drawing part.
>Don’t draw a stick person
>Draw people with happy face.
>Draw normal people: with 2 ears, 2 eyes, 5 fingers in each hands, etc.
>Give differentiation between a male and female. Short hair for men; long hair for women, etc.

4.Essay Section of the Exam. At random occasions, police applicants are given essay exercises. This is done to
assess police applicant in skills incident reporting, which is very important in the police service. Be precise in your
English, and watch grammar rules, just a tip.

5. The IQ test. It is very important you get high scores in this section. Police agencies have a high regard for
intellectual personnel. Expect this exam to be time pressured. The proctor does not expect you will answer all the
items correctly so answer carefully. Aim for quality and not quantity and don’t leave any items unanswered.

The Personal Interview: Police applicants are assessed by the way they present themselves. Be snappy in carrying
yourself and be witty in answering their questions. In other words, you have to be well-spoken and fluent.
Generally, you have to sell yourself in this part of the Police Recruitment Pneuro-Psychiatric Exam.

Sample Tests and Instructions (Actual ni siya na test nakakuha ra ko ug leak sa internet)

The Philippine National Police (PNP) conducts Neuro-psych Examination to test mental stability, adaptability and
psychological functioning of applicants before they are being recruited into service. The examination comprises
several parts. It includes a 35 items Aptitude (Adaptation) Test, Guilford Zimmerman Temperament Survey,
Applicant Risk Profiler, The Industrial Sentence Completion Test, Work Environment Preference Schedule (WEPS),
Hand Test, and the Drawing .

The 35 items aptitude test or commonly, the IQ test, is taken only in 15 minutes. The proctors are strict regarding
the time limit so never think that they will give you time extension. A lot, if not all of the applicants will not complete
the test. They will remind you about that before the exam. Others might not even reach the next page. The wise
thing to do is the usual trick of answering everything you can first, and then go back to difficult items incase you still
have time.

On the other parts, the proctors will then give applicants enough time to answer. Time extensions are possible. They
are mostly surveys answerable by YES or NO. Other are the same as the usual research survey types. I am talking
about the questions answerable by choosing among Strongly Agree, Agree, Neutral to Strongly Disagree .In the
Hand Test, the applicant writes a phrase that describes the given figure of hands, depending on what he/she
perceives. The last part would be the Drawing . Here, you are asked to draw two persons in opposite sex. After
that, you describe each drawing/make story of it in 4-5 sentences.

The first part should be the Information Sheet, although you can fill it up lastly. It is all about you; from your name,
to your immediate family, and up to your strengths and weaknesses. You will be asked to write an essay about you
in not less than 300 words. The most important thing is to NEVER LEAVE ANYTHING BLANK. You have to answer
everything and give what is being asked. Unanswered questions might determine whether you past or fail the exam.
