LONG RESPONSE SECTION

Answer each question in a separate booklet.
Your responses should include relevant mathematical reasoning and/or calculations.

Question 6 (15 Marks) Start a new booklet

Marks

a) Solve:

i) |𝑥 − 1| = 2𝑥 + 3 3

ii) (𝑥 − 3)(𝑥 − 1) = 15 3

b) Solve by completing the square: 3𝑥 2 − 8𝑥 + 3 = 0 3

c) At a school canteen, five apples and two bags of chips costs $9 while nine apples and three 4
bags of chips costs $15. Write equations to describe this situation and solve them to find
the cost of each single item.

d) In the diagram, AD and BE are straight lines that intersect at F. AB produced and ED 2
produced intersect at point C. ∠ BAF = α˚, ∠ BCD = β˚ and ∠ FED = 𝛾˚, as shown.

Show that 𝜃 = 𝛼 + 𝛽 + 𝛾, giving reasons.

a) Simplify −
2𝑥 2 −5𝑥 4𝑥 2 −25

b) In △ACD, point B lies on AC and point E lies on AD.

AB = 24 cm, AE = 21 cm, ED = 11 cm, BC = 4 cm and DC = 40 cm, as shown.

i) Prove that △ACD ||| △AEB. 3

ii) Hence, find the length of BE. 2

c) Fully factorise (𝑚 + 𝑝)3 − (𝑚 − 𝑝)3 3

2𝑥−5
d) Consider the expression .
| 2𝑥−5|

i) For what value of x is this expression undefined? 1

ii) Simplify the expression, writing your answers without absolute value signs and stating 3
clearly the values of x for which your answers apply.

Question 8 (15 Marks) Start a new booklet

Marks

a) Solve 3( 9𝑥 ) − 4( 3𝑥 ) + 1 = 0. 3

b) In the diagram below, △ABC and △DCB have a common side, BC.
AB = DC and ∠ BAC = ∠ CDB.

Copy or trace the diagram into your answer booklet.

i) Explain why the SAS rule CANNOT be used to prove that △ABC ≡ △DCB. 1

ii) Prove, instead, that △ABE ≡ △DCE. 3

iii) Deduce that EB = EC. 1

iv) Deduce that ∠ ABC = ∠ DCB 2

v) What rule can now be used to prove that △ABC ≡ △DCB ? 1

Question 8 is continued on the next page.
