STRUCTURAL STEELS

Sectional Shapes
Wide Flanges
• W Shape
• HP Shape
• M Shape
S-Shape
• The S shapes are doubly
symmetric shapes whose
inside flange surfaces have
approximately 16.67% slope.
C-Shapes
• C shapes are channels with inside flange surfaces having a slope of
approximately 16.67%.
L-Shapes
• angle shapes with either equal or unequal legs
T-Shapes

Type fo shape Example designat ion

Wshape W27 x 114
S shape S20 x 95
M shape M8 x 25
American St andard Channel C12 x 30
Miscellaneous Channel MC 12 x 50
HP (bearing pile) shape HP 14 x 89

Unequal leg angle L 8 x 4 x 1/2
Plat e PL 1/2 x 12
Rolled steel bar section:

• Available in diameter varying from 6mm to 25mm

Square steel bars
• Used for grillwork, handrails for staircases etc
Steel Plate Sections
• Used for construction of water tanks and other storage structures, built up
beams, columns, base plate for foundations etc.
Rolled Standard Sheet Sections
• Used for construction of boxes and vehicle bodies.
Rolled Steel Tubes
• Inner diameter varying from 15 to
150mm.
• Thickness varying from 2 to 5.4mm.
• Efficient structural sections for formwork
and trusses
Built-Up Sections
• Composed of a combination of available basic sections like plates, angles,
channels etc.
• For increased strength and stability
• Different sections are joined by welding or riveting
NON FERROUS METALS
Aluminum
Forms: castings,
sheet, plate, bar, rod,
channel and
forgings.
Lighter than most
metals, do not rust or
corrode, can be
forged, machined
and welded easily
Copper
Reddish metal, very ductile
and malleable.
High electrical and heat
conductivity.
Can be forged, cast and
cold worked, can be
welded.
Very common in electrical
industry made into wire and
conductors. Typical copper
products are sheets,
bushings, wire , bearings.
Brass and Bronze
Brass, an alloy of copper and
zinc.
Has low melting point and
high heat conductivity.
Good machinability and can
be welded.
Bronze, an alloy of copper
and tin, has high strength,
rust or corrosion resistant,
good machinability and can
be welded.
TIN
Used in coating steel,
and alloying element,
in the form of foil.
Can be die cast, cold
worked, machined
and soldered
(cannot be welded)
LEAD
Used mainly in the
manufacturing of
electrical equipment
(lead-coated power
and telephone cables
and storage batteries)
Low strength with heavy
weight, can be casted,
cold worked, welded
and machined
NICKEL
Used in making alloys for
both ferrous and non-
ferrous metals. Can be
readily welded by gas or
arc methods can be
machined, forged cast
and formed easily.
