1. INTRODUCTION

This manual contains electrical and mechanical installation and safety information which you should
know before using BR series photovoltaic modules. This manual will explain important safety information
and describe how to install photovoltaic modules. Please read & understand the information contained
in this manual before starting the installation. Retain this manual for reference.

2. GENERAL INFORMATION

PV modules generate DC electricity when exposed to sunlight. Since modules are constructed as PV
arrays, the power might cause lethal shock and burn hazards. In order to reduce the risk, only
authorized and qualified personnel should handle and install modules, always cover module surface
with opaque material when installing modules to halt electricity produced. Do not touch terminals
during installation.

The Rated electrical characteristics are ±10 percent of the indicated values of Pmax, Isc and Voc
under STC (standard test conditions).

Under normal conditions, a photovoltaic module is likely to e x p e r i e n c e conditions that

produce more current and/or voltage than reported at standard test conditions. The requirements
of the National Electrical Code (NEC) in Article 690-8 shall be followed to address these
increased outputs. To reduce the operating temperature the module has to be mounted on any
surface with a mini- mum distance of 4 inches (10 cm). In Canada, the installation shall be in
accordance with CSA C22.1, Safety Standard for Electrical Installations, Canadian Electrical
Code, Part 1.

Underwriters Laboratories Information (U.S. and Canada)

The fire rating of this module is valid only when mounted in the manner specified in the
mechanical mounting instructions. The module is considered to be in compliance with UL 1703
only when the module is mounted in the manner specified by the mounting instructions below.
A module with exposed conductive parts is considered t o be in compliance with UL 1703 only
when it is electrically grounded in accordance with the instructions presented below and the
requirements of the National Electrical Code. Where common grounding hardware is used to
attach a listed grounding device, the attachment must be made in conformance with the
grounding device manufacturer’s instructions.

3. WARNING AND CAUTION - INSTALLATION AND OPERATION

• The recommended maximum number of series connected modules (with a 25% safety factor) are
10 (per UL 600V), and 17 (per IEC 1000). However, specific maximum count for each installation
varies based on location. Details may be found on page 6 under “Series connection of modules”.

• Do not direct concentrated or artificially concentrated sunlight on the module.

• The modules are not designed for integral mounting as part of a roof or wall.

• The assembly is to be mounted over a fire-resistant roof covering rated for the application. This
module is qualified for both low slope and steep slope installations under UL1703 fire testing.

• Never touch the end of output cables with bare hands when the module is irradiated. Cover the
surface of module with an opaque cloth or other suitable material.

• Do not wear metallic jewelry which may cause of electric shock during installation.

• Do not disconnect the cables under load.

• Do not stand or step on module or let foreign objects fall on module surface, as damage may occur
to the glass surface. Do not use a module with broken glass.

• Do not allow children or unauthorized persons too close to the area of module installation.

• Only work under dry weather conditions and always keep the modules and tools dry during
installation.

• Do not install modules where flammable gasses or vapors are present.

• Use stainless steel hardware to mount the modules. Fasteners should be torqued to 8 Nm.

• Support structures should be wind rated and approved by the appropriate local and civil codes
prior to module installation.

4. GROUNDING

• All module rails and mounting systems must be properly grounded in accordance with local
and national electrical codes.

• Any module without a frame (laminate) shall not be considered to comply with the requirements

Figure 1 Module Mounting

The mounting structure must be firmly fixed in place in a manner suitable to withstand all expected loads,
including wind and snow.

• It is recommended to obtain approval by the appropriate local jurisdictions.

• Module mounting holes are provided for easy installation and proper mechanical loading. Each
module has four openings for mounting clips. The clips are inserted in each hole, prior to installing
the module. The module clips lock into the mounting rail with minimal pressure.

• Keep distance and clearance between module back side and the mounting surface to allow cooling
air to reach the back of the modules. It is suggested that the modules are mounted at least 4

inches (10 cm) from any structure. The modules should never be sealed to the mounting surface
in a manner that would prevent air circulation.

• When installing modules, the junction box shall be in the upper most position to minimize the ingress
of water.

7. WIRING

General

• All wiring should be done in accordance with applicable electrical codes. Wiring methods should
be in accordance with the NEC.

• All wiring should be done by a qualified, licensed professional.

• Wiring should be protected to help ensure personal safety and to prevent damage.

• All modules connected in series should be of the same model number and/or type.

• Do not connect modules in parallel without using a connection box.

Wire Type

• PV module interconnections should be 90C wet-rated conductors. An allowable wire type is

using USE-2 or PV-wire single conductor cable for exposed applications.

• For field connections, please use minimum No. 12 AWG copper wires insulated for a minimum of
90C.

Module wiring

The modules can be wired to the battery or to other modules by the way of series connection (Fig
2) or parallel connection (Fig 3).
Figure 2 Series Connection Figure 3 Parallel Connection

Battery Charging

When wiring modules to t h e battery, a charge controller is needed to protect the battery from
overcharging by the solar module. The controller is connected in the circuit between the module and
battery. Connect wires from the (-) connector and (+) connectors of the solar module to the
corresponding terminals of the charge controller. Connect wires from the (-) and (+) terminals of

the battery to the corresponding terminals of the controller. Always fuse the connections at the
battery for safety. Refer to the module rating label (on module) for recommended fuse size.

Series connection of modules

Wire modules in series to increase the voltage. Connect a wire from the positive connector of one
module to negative connector of the next module as shown in Fig 2. Caution should be observed as
the system voltage increases. Under normal conditions, the module voltage may exceed the rated
voltage at Standard Test Conditions when temperature is below STC (25C).

The maximum system voltage is calculated by multiplying the value of Voc on the product rating label
by the appropriate value in Table 690.7 in the NEC, and then multiplying that value by the number of
modules in a series string. It is recommended to multiply by a factor of 1.25 with the listing Voc on
module label, and make sure the maximum system voltage must not exceed 600V (UL standard).

Parallel connection of modules

Connect modules in parallel to increase the current. Connect the wire from the positive connector of one
module to positive connector of the next module and negative one to negative one as shown in Figure 3.

Each module, or series string of modules, requires a series fuse to protect the string. The maximum
fuse rating is listed on the product rating label. The short-circuit current of system is calculated by
multiplying the value of Isc on the listing label, multiply the value by 1.56 to account for extended
periods of sunlight. Use this value to determine the conductor capacities, fuse sizes connected to
each module output.

Grounding

Module rails and all exposed non-current-carrying metal parts of module, equipment, and conductor
enclosures should be connected to an earth ground for safety, protection from lightning and related
static discharge. The BR series modules incorporate integrated grounding when the factory supplied
mounting clips are employed as shown in the illustration below (figures 6 & 7). The clips form a bond
with the mounting structure resulting in ground continuity between the module rails and the structure.

• Alternate grounding method

Attach a separate ground wire to one of the holes marked with ground label on the module frame
with a listed grounding lug 1954381-1(Fig 4) on each module and mounting rails. The listed grounding
lugs should be made by the type of materials of stainless steel.

Another method (Fig 8) is to attach a bonding wire from each module to a listed grounding lug on the
rails with the grounding wire attached to a listed lug on rails. Grounding is achieved through securement
to the array frame. The array frame shall be grounded in accordance with NEC Article 250.

 Grounding lug installation steps

1. Place the grounding clip onto the frame making sure that the screw straddles the pre–drilled
hole. Using a No. 2 cross–recessed screwdriver, thread the screw into the hole until the head is flush
with the base and the base is flush with the frame, then tighten the screw with another 1/4 to 1/2
turn. Recommended torque is between 2.3 and 2.8 Nm.

2. Insert the wire into the wire slot. Press down on both ends of the wire (the wire slot will cause
the wire form a slight curve).

3. Manually, or using channel lock pliers, push the slider over the base until it covers the base. This
will terminate the wire.

6. Manually, or using channel lock pliers, push the slider over the base until it covers the base. This
will terminate the wire.

• Grounding conductor size

According to NEC [690.45], equipment grounding conductor should be sized as following:

• Systems without ground fault protection equipment: The conductor should be sized for suiting for
125% of circuit short circuit current. The shortcut method of sizing this conductor is simply to size
the equipment grounding conductor the same size as the current carrying conductors. Calculating
125% of circuit Isc may produce a conductor size that is one size smaller than the current carrying
conductors, but that must be calculated for confirmation.

• Systems with ground fault protection equipment: Size equipment grounding conductor according to
NEC Table 250.122.

The ground wire should be at least the same size as the source circuit conductors. It is recommended
to use 8 - 6 AWG conductors to the listed lug.

OVER CURRENT PROTECTION

Necessary fuses or circuit breakers must be properly sized and specified for each circuit. Source circuit
overcurrent protection must be sized so that both the PV module and the conductor from the module
to the overcurrent device are properly protected. PV modules must be protected so that the maximum
series fuse rating, printed on the listing label, is not exceeded. It is important to note that even
though the listing label states “fuse” rating, a more accurate term would be the “maximum series
overcurrent protection” rating since either a fuse or a circuit breaker may be used to satisfy this listing
requirement. The module may be protected either by installing fuses or circuit breakers in a series
string of modules or by the design of the PV system.

Battery (if used) overcurrent protection must have a sufficient voltage and ampere-interrupt rating
(AIR) to withstand the operating conditions of the battery system.

Inverter Output Circuit overcurrent protection should be sized and protected according to the
manufacturers’ directions. The circuit and corresponding overcurrent protection should be sized at a
125% of the maximum continuous output of the inverter. The inverter may also have a maximum
allowable overcurrent requirement.
