The AAS hosts sky viewing
sessions, lecturers, and offers
educational outreach to schools,
libraries, and scouts. The AAS
meets weekly for socializing
and sharing knowledge which
also includes amateur telescope
making and astrophotography. In
addition to their fantastic school
and library programs, they also
steward a statewide adopt-a-
library telescope program and
have placed 108 telescopes into
libraries across Massachusetts
since 2014.
The “Legacy of Apollo” is a
one hour custom designed pro-
gram and includes a full two
table display of space artifacts
and handouts. The program also
includes outdoor stargazing, if
the weather permits.

Ft. Devens Museum
Speaker
Discovering close ancestral
ties to colonial Massachusetts
led Ft. Devens Museum’s guest
speaker for July, Mark Deuger,
to study especially the story of
King Philip’s War. Mark shares
what he has learned in a talk
on July 20th at the Museum, 94
Jackson Road, starting at 1 p.m.
as the Museum continues to open
its doors to the public each third
Saturday of every month from 10
a.m. to 3 p.m.
In his youth Mark learned
he was a descendent of John
and Grace Fairbanks, who set-
tled in Dedham in the 1630s,
and that two of his ancestors,
Jonas and Joshua Fairbanks,
were killed during the Nipmuc
tribe’s raid on Lancaster during
King Philip’s War. Residence
in Massachusetts in the 1990s
gave him the opportunity to
explore his family history and
that led to pinpointing this
particular war, called also
Metacom’s War or the first
Indian war. In addition to
studying many books and docu-
ments related to the war, he
visited historic sites associated
with the conflict.
An Illinois native, Mark grad-
uated from Monmouth College
with a Bachelor’s degree in geol-
ogy and an officer’s commission
in the U.S. Army. His Army
career involved him in vari-
ous infantry and special forces
assignments at several Army
installations, including a tour at
Ft. Devens with 10th Special
Forces Group (Airborne), As a
result he developed an interest
in military history. And adding
to that the fact that he is part

baking powder, the makers of

To get the best leavening,
it’s not only important to know
the expiration date, but also to
remember when you opened the
can. Baking powder starts to react
as soon as the can is opened and
the powder is exposed to heat and
moisture. That’s why you should
get a new can after six months.

may not react well.
Smart Storage
Baking powder should be
stored in a cool, dry place, away
from heat or moisture. Make sure
the lid is on securely at all times.
Don’t store it in the refrigera-
tor or freezer. Condensation will
gather on the inside of the can,
causing the powder to react in
the can.
If you’re not sure whether your
powder has been properly stored,
you can test it easily. Take 1 tea-
spoon of baking powder and mix
it with 1/3 cup very hot water. If
it fizzles and bubbles, go ahead
and bake away. If it doesn’t react
or the reaction is delayed or
weak, it’s time to get a new can.
Once you know your powder
is fresh, you may care to try it out
with this delicious cake:
Bourbon Pecan Pound Cake
Cake:
½ c. vegetable shortening
½ c. butter
1½ c. granulated sugar
2 c. cake flour
1½ tsp. Clabber Girl Baking
Powder
¼ tsp. Clabber Girl Baking
Soda
½ tsp. salt
Glaze:
1 c. confectioners’ sugar
1½ tsp. bourbon whiskey
1½ Tbsp. water
Instructions:
Set oven rack to middle loca-
tion and preheat oven to 350
degrees F.
Cake:
In a large bowl, cream togeth-
er shortening, butter and sugar
until smooth then set aside. In
a medium bowl, sift together
flour, Clabber Girl Baking
Powder, Clabber Girl Baking
Soda and salt; combine well, add
to creamed mixture, and mix on
low speed 1 minute. Add sour
cream, whiskey, eggs, and beat
on medium speed 2 minutes;
mix in pecans. Pour batter into
greased 9-inch tube pan or 9 x 5
x 3-inch loaf pan.
Bake (middle rack) at 350
degrees F for 55 minutes or
until cake tests done. To test
cake, insert a toothpick into
the cake and visually check to
ensure toothpick is clean when
removed. Allow cake to cool
before applying glaze.
Glaze:
Beat sugar, whiskey and water
together until smooth. Pour over
cake.

Adult Day Health Services
People are living longer with
chronic illnesses and physical
limitations that affect their func-
tioning level and ability to live
alone. There are also more adults
suffering from Alzheimer’s dis-
ease, a progressive brain dis-
ease that affects ones memory,
judgment, and reasoning. With
longevity also comes increased
caregiver responsibility. More
and more caregivers are feeling
the strain of caring for elder
family members while working
and maintaining the household.
Adult day services, referred to
by one caregiver as the Hidden
Jewel in the community, can
relieve caregiver stress as well as
help frail elders remain in their
homes for as long as possible.
According to the National
Adult Day Services Association,
there are approximately 4,000
adult day centers nationwide.
The average age of attendee at
an adult day center is 72, and two
thirds of adult day participants
are women. Adult day programs
provide a safe structured day
time environment which typi-
cally includes transportation, a
light breakfast, full hot lunch
and afternoon snack, therapeu-
tic activities, and social service
support. The medical model,
referred to as Adult Day Health
also includes nursing care to opti-
mize health and decrease risk of
acute illness and hospitalization.
This includes on-going physical
and mental assessments, skilled
nursing procedures, medication
monitoring, incontinent manage-
ment, and education related to
chronic illnesses.
With over 140,000 people suf-
fering from Alzheimer’s disease
in MA caregivers are looking to
alternative care to help keep their
loved ones at home for as long
as possible. Alzheimer’s disease
is currently the seventh leading
cause of death among adults in
the United States. Adult Day
Health Programs are designed
to provide individual care, small

group activities, close supervi-
sion at meal time, and caregiver
support for this vulnerable popu-
lation. As one caregiver shared,
“Attending an adult day health
program has been a wonderful
opportunity for my mother to
remain active and socialize. It
has allowed her to stay at home
longer than we ever anticipated.”

position.
Duties: Process emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
Dispatch Police, Fire, EMS, emergency and non-emergency units and
personnel. Monitor and operate radios, computers, telephones, alarms,
cameras, specialized equipment. Enter, update, and retrieve information
from local, state, and national computerized systems. Work effectively
and efficiently under stressful situations. Assist citizens, prisoner watch,

the Dispatch Training Program.
Minimum Entrance Requirements: high school degree or equivalency
and 2 yrs. of work experience. Proficient computer skills required.
Ability to multi-task is essential. Hours will vary; must be available 24/7
for night, weekend and holiday hours. Position requires Assessment
Test, medical, and the ability to pass a background check. Previous
experience preferred but willing to train the right candidate. Excellent
communication skills are necessary.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in assessing and processing
emergency and non-emergency requests for assistance. Experience in
maintaining records, organizing and prioritizing work, ability to take
direction and work independently. Strong interpersonal and customer
service skills.
