Solar chimneys promote natural ventilation and cooling of buildings through convection. They work by absorbing solar energy to heat air inside a tall, narrow chimney structure, usually with a glazed front. This causes the heated air to rise and exit out the chimney's vent at the top, drawing cooler air in from lower vents or windows. In winter, the chimney's vents can be closed to redirect warm air inside for heating. Solar chimneys have been demonstrated in buildings in Victoria, Australia and the UK to provide interior climate control and complement conventional systems.
