PROJECT PLAN IN SCIENCE 7

(Recyled Yarn Basket)

I. Objectives

 Help conserve the environment by creating a useful material out of trash.

 Use yarns and papers in making a recycled yarn basket.
II. Materials

Yarns Folder Beads Stapler Ruler

Scissors Needle Lace Pencil Staples

III. Procedures
Step 1: Gather all the needed materials in making a recycled yarn basket.
Step 2: Trace a circle using a template.
Step 3: Cut out your circle with a pair of scissors.
Step 4: Staple one poster board strip to the center of your circle and on the edge of your
circle.
Step 5: Staple a second strip of poster board onto your circle while creating a “V.” It’s
important that the strips do not overlap each other outside of the circle.
Step 6: Continue to staple on odd number of strips around the circle. It should look like
a sun. Staple the center of the sun to keep all the strips in place and lying flat.
Step 7: Flip “sun” over so that the open side of staples is facing up. Tie a 24-inch length
of yarn to one of the strips. Double knot the yarn onto the strip.
Step 8: Begin weaving over and under the paper strips in a clockwise direction. It may
help turn the “sun” as you weave over and under the strips.
Step 9: When you run out of yarn, a new color can be tied onto the end of that color to
continue weaving.
Step 10: Continue to weave until the paper strips are about ¾ covered.
Step 11: Once the strips are ¾ covered, the weaving step is finished and the top of the
basket is ready to be finished.
Step 12: Trim the strips of paper down to staples.
Step 13: Tie on a short pieces of yarn onto the top row of yarn that is woven around the
basket to add fringe. Make a handle out of the yarn and paper and attached it to the
basket.
Step 14: Other embellishments like beads and lace can be added as well if desired.
