Innovation in its modern meaning is "a new idea,
creative thoughts, and new imaginations in form
of device or method". Innovation is often also
viewed as the application of better solutions
that meet new requirements, unarticulated
needs, or existing market needs. Such
innovation takes place through the provision of
more-effective products, processes, services,
technologies, or business models that are made
available to markets, governments and society.
An innovation is something original and more
effective and, as a consequence, new, that
"breaks into" the market or society. Innovation is
related to, but not the same as, invention, as
innovation is more apt to involve the practical
STEAM TURBINE
implementation of an invention (i.e. new /
improved ability) to make a meaningful impact
in the market or society, and not all innovations
require an invention. Innovation often [quantify]
manifests itself via the engineering process,
when the problem being solved is of a technical
or scientific nature. The opposite of innovation is
exnovation.
TECHNOLOGY is the collection of techniques,
skills, methods, and processes used in the
production of goods or services or in the
accomplishment of objectives, such as scientific

investigation. Technology can be the
knowledge of techniques, processes, and the
like, or it can be embedded in machines to
allow for operation without detailed knowledge
of their workings. Systems (e. g. machines)
applying technology by taking an input,
changing it according to the system's use, and
then producing an outcome are referred to as
technology systems or technological systems.
The simplest form of technology is the
development and use of basic tools.
SOME NEW INNOVATIONS
In this section, we shall see the new and latest innovations present
nowadays

The airless Uptis tire eliminates the risk of flats while also reducing
resource use and wear on the vehicle.

A wearable tracking system for use at large events relies on GPS to

monitor many staffers at once—with no need for a mobile phone
connection.

applied to the wood in the form of a paint or stain.

The Lego Braille Bricks project aims to help visually impaired

children learn Braille while they play.
TECHNOLOGIES THAT THE WORLD IS
WAITING FOR

An extraordinary IT experience
Industry-leading innovation is also taking place at Athens International Airport, where delivering an extraordinary
passenger experience is at the forefront of development.
One of the latest additions to Athens International Airport’s diverse range of state-of-the art facilities is the Virtual
Assistant Holographic Announcer, which provides travel information through projected videos, using the illusion of a
human agent’s hologram, and next-generation solutions are being deployed airport-wide. In 2012 a Queue
Management system performing automated, real-time measurements of the screening point queues through
cameras and video analytics was installed, and similarly the airport’s ‘Time to Gate’ service has been recently
introduced, to provide information to passengers regarding average queuing times at security screening points, as
well as and the estimated walking time to boarding gates.

Balanced checkpoints and minimal waiting

The power of cutting-edge video analytics can revolutionise queue management in airports, and to reduce waiting
times for a better passenger experience. Innovative queue management expert Blue Eye Video utilises existing CCTV
systems, or implements dedicated video cameras in airports, and using its ingenious technology measures and
predicts waiting times at security checkpoints, check-in areas, passport control, taxi lanes and any crowded airport
environment. Blue Eye Video’s boundary-breaking technology instantly counts the number of passengers in an
image, and then calculates waiting times and predicts the amount of time passengers will lose in queue.

5 GAMES THAT WORLD IS WAITING FOR

4G TO 5G
5G is generally seen as the fifth generation cellular network technology
that provides broadband access. The industry association 3GPP defines
any system using "5G NR" (5G New Radio) software as "5G", a definition
that came into general use by late 2018. Others may reserve the term for
systems that meet the requirements of the ITU IMT-2020, which represents
more nations. 3GPP will submit their 5G NR to the ITU. It follows 2G, 3G and
4G and their respective associated technologies (such as GSM, UMTS, LTE,
LTE Advanced Pro, etc.).
The first fairly substantial deployments were in April 2019. In South Korea, SK
Telecom claimed 38,000 base stations, KT Corporation 30,000 and LG U Plus
18,000; of which 85% are in six major cities. They are using 3.5 GHz (sub-6)
spectrum in non-standalone (NSA) mode and tested speeds were from 193
to 430 Mbit/s down. 260,000 signed up in the first month and the goal is 10%
of phones on 5G by the end of 2019.
Verizon opened service on a very limited number of base stations in the US
cities of Chicago and Minneapolis using 400 MHz of 28 GHz millimeter wave
spectrum in NSA mode. Download speeds in Chicago were from 80 to 900
Mbit/s. Upload speeds were from 12 to 57 Mbit/s. The round-trip delay time
was 25 milliseconds. It was reported in May 2019 that Verizon's 5G service
would regularly hit 1 Gbit/s in some locations.
Five companies sell 5G radio hardware and 5G systems for carriers:
Huawei, ZTE, Nokia, Samsung, and Ericsson.
5G NR speed in sub-6 GHz bands can be slightly higher than the 4G with a
similar amount of spectrum and antennas, though some 3GPP 5G networks
will be slower than some advanced 4G networks, such as T-Mobile's
LTE/LAA network, which achieves 500+ Mbit/s in Manhattan.[22] The 5G
specification allows LAA (License Assisted Access) as well but LAA in 5G
has not yet been demonstrated. Adding LAA to an existing 4G
configuration can add hundreds of megabits per second to the speed,
but this is an extension of 4G, not a new part of the 5G standard.
Speeds in the less common millimeter wave spectrum can be substantially
higher.

Lifi and Wi-Fi. What’s the difference?
Both LiFi and Wi-Fi technologies are mainly used for internet based
applications. LiFi uses light as medium for data communication
whereas Wi-Fi uses Electromagnetic waves for data communication.
LiFi is optical communication technology whereas Wi-Fi is radio
communication technology. Let us understand them individually
before we derive difference between them.
• LiFi (Light Fidelity) works based on VLC (Visible Light Communication) principle.
• LiFi transmits data using light intensity modulation.
• It uses LEDs at transmit ends and Photo-detectors at receive ends. LiFi dongle
uses photo-detectors as shown in the figure-1. Here LEDs are connected with
internet server via lamp driver for internet connection.
• It uses light with wavelength ranging from 380 nm to 780 nm for data
communication between LEDs and photo detectors.
• LiFi system supports three modes viz. peer to peer, star and broadcast.
• LiFi system uses modulation schemes such as OOK, VPPM, and CSK.

• As shown WiFi AP (Access Point) or Router is connected with internet broadband

cable or with cellular network. All the wifi compatible mobile phones, tablets or
laptops are connected with AP (or router) to obtain internet.
• WiFi network operates in either of two modes viz. adhoc (i.e. BSS-Basic Service
Set) and infrastructure (i.e. ESS-Extended Service Set).
• In BSS WLAN compliant stations (i.e. STAs) communicate directly. In ESS WLAN
compliant STAs communicate with APs (Access Points) to access internet.
• WiFi supports different speeds and coverage ranges as per implemented
standard in the devices (STAs, APs). 802.11a supports upto 54 Mbps, 11b upto 11
Mbps, 11n supports 72 Mbps/150 Mbps as per BW (20MHz/40MHz), 802.11ac wave-
1 supports upto 1.3 Gbps (80MHz, 3 streams, 256QAM), 802.11ac wave-2 supports
upto 3.5 Gbps (160MHz, 4 streams, 256QAM) etc. The distance coverage of 70
meters (indoor) to 250 meters (outdoor) can be achieved.
• WiFi network operates in different frequency bands viz. 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz.

Conclusion of LiFi vs. WiFi:

• LiFi technology is not replacement of widely used wifi technology. Both the
technologies LiFi and WiFi co-exist together based on their respective unique
features.
• LiFi operates between wavelengths in the range from 380 nm to 780 nm. WiFi
operates at different frequency bands viz. 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
• LiFi is used to exchange data incredibly rapidly and securely at much lower
power level compare to WiFi.
APPLICATION ON MEDICAL FIELD

1. Cutting Back on Melanoma Biopsies

With the most deadly form of skin cancer, melanoma, a huge number of
dangerous-looking moles are actually harmless, but has always been impossible to
know for sure without an invasive surgical biopsy. Today dermatologists have new
help in making the right call — a handheld tool approved by the FDA for
multispectral analysis of tissue morphology.

2. Electronic Aspirin
For people who suffer from migraines, cluster headaches, and other causes
of chronic, excruciating head or facial pain, the "take two aspirins and call
me in the morning" method is useless. Doctors have long associated the most
severe, chronic forms of headache with the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG),
a facial nerve bundle, but haven't yet found a treatment that works on the
SPG long-term. A technology under clinical investigation at Autonomic
Technologies, Inc., (Redwood City, CA) is a patient-powered tool for blocking
SPG signals at the first sign of a headache. The system involves the
permanent implant of a small nerve stimulating device in the upper gum on
the side of the head normally affected by headache. The lead tip of the
implant connects with the SPG bundle, and when a patient senses the onset
of a headache, he or she places a handheld remote controller on the cheek
nearest the implant. The resulting signals stimulate the SPG nerves and block
the pain-causing neurotransmitters.

3. Needle-Free Diabetes Care

Diabetes self-care is a pain—literally. It brings the constant need to draw
blood for glucose testing, the need for daily insulin shots and the heightened
risk of infection from all that poking. Continuous glucose monitors and insulin
pumps are today's best options for automating most of the complicated
daily process of blood sugar management – but they don't completely
remove the need for skin pricks and shots. But there's new skin in this game.
Echo Therapeutics (Philadelphia, PA) is developing technologies that would
replace the poke with a patch. The company is working on a transdermal
biosensor that reads blood analytes through the skin without drawing blood.

4. Robotic Check-Ups
A pillar of health reform is improving access to the best health care for more
people. Technology is a cost-effective and increasingly potent means to
connect clinics in the vast and medically underserved rural regions of the
United States with big city medical centers and their specialists. Telemedicine
is well established as a tool for triage and assessment in emergencies, but
new medical robots go one step further—they can now patrol hospital
hallways on more routine rounds, checking on patients in different rooms and
managing their individual charts and vital signs without direct human
intervention.
