Building Workshop Practical

Students are required to comply with the Building Laboratory rules when attending the
Building Workshops. Lecturer in-charged reserves the right to discharge any student who
disobey the rules from the venue at once.
Each tutorial group will be divided into SIX (6) sub-groups of no more than FIVE (5)
students per group assigned by the lecturer in-charged. Student are required to attend the
Building Workshops as per scheduled and to undertake the following tasks:
Building Workshop 1a:
- Workability of fresh concrete (Slump test )
Building Workshop 1b:
- Workability of fresh concrete (Compaction Factor Test)
Building Workshop 2:
- Sieve Analysis ofaggregate
Building Workshop 3:
- Cube Test

Student will be assessed on their quality of work and teamwork in housekeeping during the
building workshop pratical.
Building Workshop Reports
After completing each building workshop, students are required to prepare the workshop report
in group for submission after ONE (1) week to lecturer in-charged for marking and feedback.

Report Contents
The group workshop report shall consist of the following in sequence of:

1. Front cover (page 4) and marking scheme (page 3);


2. Individual background information;
 Demonstrate individual understanding on the topics concerned in not more
than 1 page per student with the individual name clearly stated.
3. Workshop objectives;
4. Workshop materials and tools;
 State with the aid of sketches/photos, the relevant materials and tools used in
each workshop.
5. Workshop procedures;
 Describe with the aid of sketches/photos, in passive verb with past tense, the
step-by-step procedures of work in each workshop.
6. Workshop results;
 Record with the aid of photos, the completed work in each workshop and the
relevant feedback from lecturer in-charged.
7. Discussions;
8. Conclusions; and
9. References.
Referencing, Report and Figure Formats
The group workshop report shall be properly typed in font size 12 of Times New Roman. The
length of report, from workshop objective to references including texts and figures, shall not
exceed 10 pages with page number shown at the bottom. Additional pages of report will not be
considered for marking.

All figures shall be properly labelled, titled and referred to inside the texts. Such report shall
have proper citations and list of references in accordance to Harvard referencing system.

Assessment Strategy
Each Building Workshop carries 20 marks (Total marks each report 10%) and the highest
marks of all Building Workshops will contribute towards the coursework marks of ATGB1053
Building Materials.

Any late submission of group workshop report without acceptable reason or permission from
the assessor will be deducted 1 mark for each day of delay from the final workshop marks
awarded.
