ASSIGNMENT 1

BFC10403

Q1. The volume of a rock is found to be 0.00015m3. If the rock’s specific gravity is 2.60, what is
its weight? [CH1]

Q2. Find the difference in pressure between tanks A

and B if d1 = 330mm, d2 = 160mm, d3 = 480mm,
d4 = 230mm [CH2-P]

Q3. What is the weight of the loaded barge if width of barge

is 7m. [CH2-B]

Q4. A nozzle discharges water jet (D = 60 mm) into the air at the end of horizontal pipeline (D =
120 mm).The velocity of water in pipeline and gage pressure are 4 m/s and 400 kPa,
respectively. Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant axial force the water exerts
on the nozzle, and the head loss in the nozzle. [CH3-M]

Q5. A closed tank with partly water is under pressure. A 5

cm diameter hose connected to the tank discharges
water to atmosphere on the roof. If fiction losses is 1.5
m, calculate pressure should be maintained to deliver
15 L/s to the roof. [CH3-B]

Q6. A rectangular plate (5 m high, 4 m wide) blocks the end of a 4 m

deep of freshwater channel. The plate is hinged at point A and is
restrained from opening by a fixed ridge at point B. Determine
the water force exerted on the plate. [CH-F]
