Introduction:
What is Google wave?
Google Wave is a software application centered on online. It is a
real-time communication platform. Google Wave is web-based, computing platform, and
communications protocol, designed to merge key features of media like e-mail, instant
messaging, wikis, and social networking. Communications using the system can be synchronous
and/or asynchronous, depending on the preference of individual users. Software extensions
provide contextual spelling/grammar checking, automated translation among 40 languages,
Drag-and-drop file sharing and numerous other features. You can bring a group of friends or
business partners together to discuss how your day has been or share files. Where comparing to
other online application like facebook, orkut and many more social networking, piratepad,
meetingwords it overcome the problem.

Google Wave has a lot of innovative features:

 Real-time: In most instances, you can see what someone else is typing, character-
by-character.

 Embeddability: Waves can be embedded on any blog or website.

 Applications and Extensions: Just like a Facebook application or an iGoogle

gadget, developers can build their own apps within waves. They can be anything
from bots to complex real-time games.

 Wiki functionality: Anything written within a Google Wave can be edited by

anyone else, because all conversations within the platform are shared. Thus, you
can correct information, append information, or add your own commentary within
a developing conversation.

 Open source: The Google Wave code will be open source, to foster innovation
and adoption amongst developers.

 Playback: You can playback any part of the wave to see what was said.

 Natural language: Google Wave can autocorrect your spelling, even going as far
as knowing the difference between similar words, like “been” and “bean.” It can
also auto-translate on-the-fly.

buying practices. Through market segmentation, companies divide large, heterogeneous market
into small segments that can be reached more efficiently.

Major segmentation variables for customer markets:

 Geographic Segmentation

 Demographic Segmentation

 Psychographic Segmentation

 Behavioral Segmentation

Our product is relative to Demographic and Behavioral segmentation

Demographic Segmentation:
Age and Life-cycle stage:
As consumer needs and wants change with age. Google Company was
focused on adult’s users with different application like social network, conference meet (for
example project is assign for group of 5 peoples instead of meeting every time to do project they
can do project from different places with help of Google wave in online.) Consider high
professionals can’t go to every place to analysis with the help Google wave they can analysis by
seating in one place. If they had any doubt about the task instantly they can go Google search
engine so that they can clarify their doubt.

Income segmentation:
As Wave is purely a web application so no need to spend money.

Education:
Wave can be used by professional and technical, manager, official, students,
literate but no formal schooling because person should how to use it as it was somewhat
sophisticate application.

5
GOOGLE WAVE

Behavioral Segmentation:
People have different attitude, knowledge, uses or response to a product .

Occasion Segmentation:
For example Student do project in final year in U.G. naturally they don’t like to meet
daily because of laziness so instead of meeting at one place they can do project in online and this
application is also used for chatting and video chatting also. For IT professional if they have
doubts about their work so with the help wave they can do they work even it can share task with
group persons..

User status:
Usage of product can be segment can be segment on nonuser, ex-user, regular user or
first time user. As Google want to focus on regular users they also embedded chat application,
friend list and game extension, polling options and many more. Even some people have spelling
problem so that if we enter the wrong word it will show some list to relative to that word so that
we can add that word instead wrong one.

User rates:
There are different user like light user, medium user and heavy user mainly this
product is useful for medium and heavy user for light user it will typical application can’t
understand. Whereas heavy user like some student from IT sector will do some coding to
participate in TGMC project (IBM) in such situation it will mostly useful. Middle user use to
share article or polling, playing chess, translation of language and many task it will use but it not
regular.

Loyalty status:
Market can segment by consumer loyalty. Consumers can be loyal so that all tasks
are done without going different places by seating in one place we can do such thing and also a
product can’t be satisfy for every user even though its highly updated so, Google has launch this
product with open source code product so that even can change according ourselves.

Segmenting Business markets:

Consumer and business marketers use many of the same variables to
segment their market. Almost every company serves at least some business markets. For
example coming to Google wave they have segment as social networking, develop conference
meet, and third parties to build modules. So that every range of people it can we used and also
they look up for regular users. Social network is mainly focus for youth so that they can use the
application and also it will help to them for future use like conference meet for some task that
should work together. For professionals it will use as conference meets they can use video chat
option and playback option so that they evaluate the task. Main reason is that the in India and
many more country to upload a pictures or document it will take some time so to overcome
problem they started drag and drop file sharing it can be done fraction of seconds. If user is
technocrat he can manipulate the wave option whatever he like but it should be maintain security
so that no one can effect from that modification.

Market Targeting for Google wave:

your marketing efforts on one or a few key segments.

Undifferentiated Differentiated Concentrated (niche) Micromarketing (local

Now-a-day everyone preferring for updating technology mainly in

communication. Most of them preferring virtual communication. Wave is a project announced
by Google at the Google I/O conference. It is a web application and computing platform
designed to bring together e-mail, instant messaging, wiki, and social networking, with a strong
collaborative focus, mixed with spellchecker and translator extensions, which are able to work in
concert, in real-time. It is use and builds extensions for Google Wave, the exciting new real-time
communication and collaboration technology that unifies email, instant messaging (IM), wiki,
and social networking functions in one integrated platform.

Any participant can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and
add participants at any point in the process. Then playback lets anyone rewind the wave to see
who said what and when. A wave is live. With live transmission as you type, participants on a
wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time. Writing a
Wave is a lot like typing text into Gmail, Google Docs, or a blog posting form in one’s browser.
To the left of the right-hand column featuring the discussion, there’s an in-box with other Waves.
And to the left of that, there’s a navigation pane atop a list of contacts that looks very similar to
Gmail’s layout. The free application can end up saving you valuable dollars. The ability to be
able to work together on a wave means faster communication, without misinterpretation and
keeps that wave as a record of the process.

. What wave can’t do?

The Wave preview is pre-beta software, with lots of missing functionality. This appendix is a
quick list of what you can't do yet in Wave.

Currently, in the Wave preview you cannot:

 Disable real-time, keystroke-by-keystroke live-typing in draft waves, then post them to the
hosted conversation by clicking Done (this feature is forthcoming)
 Set a wave to reply-only access. (Read-only now available!)
 Copy gadgets; the menu item is disabled in the date drop-down menu, a likely indicator this
is forthcoming
 Cut blips into other waves (Wave surgery). Google has said that this is coming
 Hide or expand all inline blips; the menu item is disabled in the date drop-down, a likely
indicator this is forthcoming
 Diff revisions that aren't sequential in playback
 Set your status to invisible or away (if you're online you've got the green dot whether you
like it or not)
8
GOOGLE WAVE

 Merge waves or blips

 Organize your contacts into groups
 Rearrange blips' vertical order
 Prevent someone you added as a participant form making the wave public, and thus exposing
a potentially private conversation.
 Upload files (it should come eventually since there is a menu for it at the bottom of waves).
 Delete a private reply from within a wave

Some of the current problems with Google Wave Preview include:

 It's overwhelmingly slow for large waves and in some browsers (such as FireFox and IE).
 Sometimes large Waves stop working after they get too big.

Product positioning:
Effective product positioning is a key ingredient for successful
marketing today. Product positioning is closely linked with market segments. Product position is
the place that it occupies related to competitors in market as perceived by the relevant group of
customers.

Positioning is the act of designing the company’s offer and images so

that the target market understand and appreciate what the company stands for in relation to its
competitors. The company’s positioning must be routed in an understanding of how the target
markets define and makes choice among vendors.

Google Wave Position strategy:

 Benefits
 Open source
 Extension
 Wikify

9
GOOGLE WAVE

Benefits:
It is a product of Google which helps users to communicate and collaborate on
the web. A “Wave” is a part of conversation and document, where user users can work together
and communicate each other with maps, photos, texts and many other things. It’s concurrent
rich-text editing, where you see on your screen nearly instantly what your fellow collaborators
are typing in your wave. That means Google Wave is just as well suited for quick messages as
for persistent content it allows for both collaboration and communication. You can also use
“playback” to rewind the wave to see how it evolved.

All of this is based on creating communication threads (waves) within and

across platforms that are instantly updated as they are being created. It’s like a huge bulletin
board, except that you don’t leave messages anymore but read the message character by as it is
being created by the person. Have ability to edit that very message at the same time while your
partner is still writing it.

Open source:
According to Opensource.org, open source is “a development method for
software that hardness the power of distributed peer review and transparency of process. The
promise of open source is better quality, high reliability, lower cost, and an end to predatory
vendor lock-in.” this basically means that you can contribute to and critique open source
software.

Extension:
Wave extensions are add-ons that add new features and functionally to your
waves. If you have ever used any Gmail Labs features, wave extensions are very similar
extensions add new functionality to wave client, normally accessible through a button installed
on your edit toolbar when you install the extension. Where Gmail Labs add-ons can be
developed only by Google employees, wave extension can be developed by anyone. As a result,
an impressive handful of extensions are already transforming wave into an even richer
experience.

Wikify:
The wikify bot adds links to and definitions from Wikipedia to your waves
for given topic. When you add wikify to a wave it will provide some instructions on how to add a
link to Wikipedia for a topic or a definition of that topic.

Suggestion for Positioning:

Google wave select the ways in which it will distinguish itself from
competitors. A difference is worth establishing to the extent that it’s satisfies these following
criteria

 Important: The difference delivers a highly valued benefit to sufficient number of users.
 Distinctive: The difference either isn’t offered by others or is offered in a more distinct
way by the company.
 Superior: The difference is superior to others ways to obtain the same benefits.
 Preemptive: The difference can’t be easily copied by competitors.

Position on product Features:

Features are characteristics that supplement the product’s basic
functioning. Most of the Google product can be offered varying features. The starting point is a
stripped-down, or “bare bones”, version of the product. The company can create additional
versions by adding extra features such as:

 Performance
 Durability
 Reliability

Features are a competitive tool for differentiating the company’s product like
wave. Some companies are extremely innovative in adding new feature to their research.

Conclusion:
A wave can be both a conversation and a document where people
can discuss and work together. Instead of using different web application like social networking,
conference meeting, mailing it can be used for all functionality in one application.
