Fundamentals of aerospace engineering are introduced through hands on design
project. Topics are treated when required in the design process including: history and

design implementation, and cost estimation. By the end of the course the design
teams should build and test their prototypes and communicate the details of their

Catalogue Description:
Aircraft structural details. Review of statics and strength of materials. Properties of
sections (centroids, moments of inertia, etc). Equilibrium of force systems (truss,
beam and frame structures and landing gear). Normal force, Shear force and bending
moment diagrams (NFD, SFD & BMD). General loads on aircraft. Torsion (stresses
and deflections). Bending normal stresses. Bending shear stresses (solid and open
sections). Shear flow in closed thin-walled sections. MATLAB & GUI development
of structural analysis tools (NFD, SFD & BMD). Lab Experiments.
1. Identify the nature and the composition of aircraft structures in order to know the type of
loads acting on the aircraft
2. Calculate the centroid and second moment of area, find the principle axis and use
the parallel axes theorem
3. Identify and distinguish between unstable and stable and between determinate and
indeterminate structures
4. Define the equilibrium of the force systems in different structures (truss, beam, frame and
aircraft landing gear)
5. Find the internal forces and reactions in trusses by applying static equilibrium equations
6. Sketch the free body diagrams to find the bending moments and shear forces in beams,
frames, wing and aircraft
7. Define the type of loads on aircraft and calculate the inertia loads and load factors
8. Calculate the shear stresses and deflection due to torsion for circular, open and thin
walled closed sections
9. Calculate the bending stresses due to bending, find normal stress and neutral axis

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Describe the generalized ideal compressible fluid flow equations; such as isentropic
flow equations and normal shock relations using previous knowledge of fluid
mechanics and thermodynamic while demonstrating the difference between
compressible and incompressible flow
2. Analyze isentropic flow in nozzles, including phenomena such as chocking, the
utilization of a convergent-divergent nozzles.
3. Solve problems associate with the presence of standing shock waves within non-
isentropic nozzle, while demonstrating supersonic inlets and supersonic diffusers.
4. Analyze nozzle flow problems s using packages like GAMBIT, FLUENT and
TECPLOT and, validate computed results with analytical results.
5. Describe supersonic flow turning (or wall deflection) and associated oblique shock
waves and expansion waves including shock detachment, Mach reflection. Shock-
shock intersection shock-expansion interaction. Also, perform numerical simulations
for oblique shock problems using FLUENT, analyze using TECPLOT package and
validate computed results with analytical results.
6. Obtain the lift and the drag coefficient of simple airfoils in supersonic flow using
shock expansion method and approximate methods of Prandtl-Meyer function and

thin airfoil theory
7. Derive the moving shock wave and expansion wave’s relations to describe unsteady
devices such as shock tubes and shock tunnels.
8. Design supersonic wind tunnel (course design project):
• Design convergent divergent nozzle using method of characteristics with tool
MATLAB
• Test your nozzle Mach number distribution using FLUENT.
• Determine the suggested minimum tunnel compression ratio, which
establishes the minimum allowable operating pressure.
• Determine the mass flow rate
• Determine the required heating to prevent liquefaction.

Catalogue Description:
This course is designed to teach students how to use a broad base of statistical methods and
concepts to organize, analyze, and interpret hypotheses developed in various applications.
This course consists of three main parts: (1) Data analysis and description,
(2) Probability and random variables, and (3) Inferential statistics. Main goal for this class is
to familiarize students with the various techniques of statistical analyses that are utilized in
different disciplines. Emphasis will be on the basic concepts and their meaning, as well as
their applications and interpretation

McGraw/Hill, 2006.

1. Collecting data, graphical presentation and tabulation.
2. Measures of central tendency: Mean, Median and Mode.
3. Measures of dispersion: range, and standard deviation.
4, Relative Dispersion and Skewness.
5. Elementary probability: random experiment, sample space, event, and
computation of probability. Rules of addition and multiplication, conditional
probability and independence.
6. Random variables, probability distributions, variance and expected value -
Some probability distributions (Binomial, Poisson, and Normal).
7. Sampling and sampling distribution: Sampling distribution of Sample Mean
(in case of large samples), central limit theorem and sampling distribution of
proportion.

Tests of statistical hypotheses: testing of mean, differences between two
means, proportion, differences between two proportions in large samples.
9. Simple linear regression and Correlation: Pearson's correlation coefficient
and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient.
