A Study on Beliefs and Misconception About Black Cats

Problem: People have beliefs that a black cat brings luck and bad omen at times. There are a
lot of variations regarding to this belief. For instance, In United Kingdom and Japan instead
of being bad luck, it is good luck. In Germany it is a bad omen if the black cat crosses your
path from right to left but it’s a good omen if it crosses from left to right. In Turkey, the bad
luck can be reversed if at the moment you hold a part of your hair. (Safe, 2013). With this
belief people tend to change their plans for that day or find a path where they will try to avoid
the black cat. With the negative insight on black cats it seems that there is a misconception
regarding black cats crossing the road. The problem is that they automatically apply their
beliefs and disregard the fact that the cat just wanted to go to its desired location.
Purpose: The purpose of the research is to inform the public regarding to this misconception
and make a correct point of view regarding the true nature of black cats. The researchers
wanted to showcase that there is no good or bad luck on how the cat will cross the road and
how to counter its bad luck. It also has a purpose to free others from the strong influence of a
