LESSON PLAN in SCIENCE V

FIRST QUARTER
Week 6, Day 3, July 10, 2019
(11:10-12:00 & 3:40-4:30)
V-COURAGE & V-CHARITY

I- OBJECTIVES
A. CONTENT STANDARDS
The learners demonstrate understanding of…

1. Materials undergo changes due to oxygen and heat (Focus: 5R’s Techniques)
B. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
The learners should be able to…

1. Uses local, recyclable solid and/or liquid materials in making useful products
C. LEARNING COMPETENCIES
1. Identify 5R’s techniques in Waste Management;
2. Recognize the importance of recycle, reduce, reuse, recover and repair in
waste management; S5MTIe-g-3
3. Work harmoniously with others;

II- SUBJECT MATTER

Changes that Materials Undergo and Waste Reduction: The 5Rs Techniques
A. Concept

As citizens of a society we have a responsibility to manage our waste sustainably. We

can do this following the 5R’s of waste management: reduce, reuse, recycle, recover
and residual management. Reduce simply means to lessen the amount of waste in
the environment; reuse means to use again or find other way to use material; recycle
is to create a new product using a material that has already served its purpose; recover
to take back or restore that has been used to a new material; and repair to fix or restore
broken item to be used again.

B. Strategies

1. Brainstorming
2. Practical Work Approach (PWA)
3. Collaborative Learning
4. Differentiated Activities

C. Materials
Activity sheets, pen, coloring materials, books, Audio Visual facilities and laptop,
reusable, and recyclable materials for the activity, books and other references.
D. References
Science Beyond Boarders
By: Evelyn T. Sarte and Ednaliza R. Garcia
Page: 8 – 12
D. Process Skills
Investigating, critical thinking, observing, describing, and inferring, reasoning and
generating ideas.
E. Integration
1. DRRM-Disaster Risk Reduction Management (Manila Bay Rehabilitation
Program)
- Apply the importance of zero waste management and putting a proper
signage of biodegradable and non-biodegradability of wastes.

2. English and Language

- Write an open letter about five sentences long addressing the public about
the proper waste management and proper segregation involving 5R’s
Techniques. Your letter must also show an appeal to government officials
to take some actions about this. (Homework Part)

- Recognise the proper pronunciation of different scientific terms and

improve their vocabulary.

3. Values (ESP)

- Recognize the importance of recycle, reduce, reuse, recover and repair in

waste management.

III- LEARNING TASKS

PREPARATORY ACTIVITIES

A. Review

 Let the learners answer the questions regarding the?

1. What is the importance of Public Storm Warning signals?
2. What government agency determines the strength of a typhoon?
3. What are the different signals of typhoon?

ELICIT

Presentation & Assessment of Prior Knowledge

 This time I’m going to post pictures on the board and try to scrutinize and analyse
what’s all about the picture?

(The teacher will post pictures on the board and let the students to think and analyse the picture
presented)

 These are the following possible questions that the learners should answer.
1. What can you say about the picture?
2. What is the picture all about?
3. Give at least five things you’ve seen in the picture and what is your idea
about it?
4. How can you manage your waste materials?

(The teacher and students will ask more questions)

 These are the following words that you will encounter as we go through with our
lesson, and you must be familiar with.

- Reduce- /rəˈd(y)o͞os/
- Reuse- /rēˈyo͞oz/
- Recycle- /rēˈsīk(ə)l/
- Recover- /riˈkəvər/
- Repair- /rəˈper/
-
(Teacher should also guide the learners to pronounce the words properly

ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY

Motivation
 Let the learners to sing along the song about Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

(Repeat the song and ask the students about their understanding on the song and let
them explain what is all about the song.)

Here are the possible questions:

1. What is the song all about?
2. Give at least 5 words you remembered from the song.
3. For instance if you won’t manage your waste materials what would happen?

EXPLORATION

1. Setting of standards

 Set norms to follow during group activity

 Remind the pupils about the precautionary measures in doing the activity
 Remind each group to present their output in class after 5 or 10 minutes.

(The teacher will divide the class into 4 groups)

2. Activity

 Learners learned many things from the previous discussion and ready to make
an output for this activity. They are now tasked to perform the activity).

Take note, their product presentation will be evaluated based on:

- Content -------- 40%
- planning and organization -------- 20%
- creativity ------- 20%
- impact ------- 20%
 The teacher will provide each group all the materials needed.
 Have each group perform the activity
 Go around and observe the work of the pupils

Group Activity : (Please see the Activity Sheets for the directions)
Group No. 1: Reduce (Harmful Materials)
Group No. 2: Reuse (Household materials)
Group No. 3: Recycle (Recycled Tin Can Organizer)
Group No. 4: Recover (Energy Recovery from wastes)
Group No. 5: Repair (Inspect the Defect)

EXPLANATION

 Group reporting and presentation

 Discussion and analysis

ELABORATION

1. Generalization

(Group Reporting)

 The teacher will ask the following questions to the learners

- What is reuse?
- What is reduce?
- What is recycle?
- What is recover?
- What is repair?
- How can you manage your waste materials?
2. Appreciation

 What do you think is the importance of 5R'?

3. Values Integration

 I am going to play a video animation entitled

“Modern World: Act Now, Save Later”

Possible questions

- What the video animation all about?

- Is there any life lesson?
- What lesson have you learned from the video animation?

EVALUATION

A. Identification

Directions: Read the situations given below, and then choose which technique is best to
be used in each situation from the word-bank.

Reduce Recycle Reuse Repair Recover

__________1. Alma uses glue to reattach the pearl on her earrings.
__________2. Marie decides to give her small clothes to her younger sister.
__________3. Veronica made a pencil holder out of empty cans.
__________4. My mother bought a big bottle of shampoo instead of sachet.
__________5. My son uses the old newspaper to make his project in landforms.

EXTEND

Now you have learned from our discussion, and it’s time to apply what you know. Choose one
task to perform at home.

Option 1. Write an open letter about five sentences long addressing the public about the
proper waste management and proper segregation involving 5R’s Techniques. Your letter
must also show an appeal to government officials to take some actions about this.

Option 2. Conduct a garage sale by making an inventory of your unused materials that can
still be reused and sold. Ask your family members to contribute. Organize all the things you
gathered in an open clean space. Start selling your items.
