EarStudio ES100 : Device Firmware Upgrade (Windows)

User’s Guide

IMPORTANT: WARNING

- From the Firmware v2.0 or later, ES100 supports Bluetooth v5.0 specification.
- F/W update with the latest version v2.0 or later is available, but please note that reverting back to v1.4.2 or before is not possible,
once you have it updated with v2.0 or later.

DO NOT revet the F/W back to v1.4.2. The device will be bricked.

STEP 0: Preliminary check

- Please check the USB cable, to see if the cable supports USB data communication.
- Many USB cables support charging only, having NO D+/D- data lines.
- If you connect ES100 to any PC through proper USB data cable in normal mode (not in DFU mode),
you should see 'EarStudio USB DAC' in the device list. Otherwise, the USB cable does not support USB Data communication.

STEP 1: Download and unzip the ES100 DFU package

- Download and unzip ES100_DFU_FW.zip


- Make sure to unzip the DFU package into the local disk. Executing the DFU without unzipping the package wouldn't work.
- *Sometimes, virus utility makes the package unzipped incorrectly. Please have your virus utility stopped for a while.
- Any zip file reader utility won’t work. Please unzip with Windows default utility.

- Unzipped package includes:


- windows
- ES100_Firmware.bin
- ES100_DeviceFirmwareUpgrade_win32.exe
- ES100_DeviceFirmwareUpgrade_win64.exe
- HidDfu.dll
- HidDfuCmd.exe
- run_win32.bat
- run_win64.bat
- run_win.bat (Please use this when you have problem with run_win32/64.bat)

IMPORTANT: Please have the package unzipped thoroughly with the explicit “extract all” process

STEP 2: Enter DFU mode

- Enter DFU mode


- ① Press and hold Power button and, (while ES100 power on or off, doesn’t matter)
- ② Connect ES100 to PC through USB data cable
- ③ Release the power button, after connecting ES100 to PC
- LED will be off, if entered DFU mode successfully
- *The timing doesn’t matter. Just keep pressing and holding Power button, then connect USB.
- NO power on sound, if entered DFU mode successfully
- USB Connection (Normal Mode) - Power on Sound ( O )
- USB Connection (DFU Mode) - Power on Sound ( X )

1. Keep holding power button

2. connect ES100 to PC PC through USB

STEP 3: Run batch file

- Run run_win32.bat or run_win64.bat (Double-Click)

- Press Enter to continue


- “Found device” should be displayed
- Unless otherwise,
- check the USB cable ➞ check again step 0
- check ES100 LED is off ➞ if still on, check again step 0
- Check the connection between ES100 with PC ➞ check again step 0
- Enter ‘y’ to proceed (Lowercase ‘y’ only)
- Capital ‘Y’ doesn’t work.

STEP 4: Wait for the completion

- Wait until finished


- 10 seconds after reaching at 100% progress, device will be restarted automatically

- Wait for the below 2 messages:


- Firmware update completed
- Device restarting

- LED will back on again after completion, as ES100 restarts automatically

Note: For those have problem with run_win32/run_win64.bat

- If run_win32.bat or run_win64.bat does not work,


- Please run_win.bat (the older version of the DFU tool)
- “Found 1 devices” should be displayed
- Wait until finished
- It takes another 2~3 minutes after reaching at 99% progress
- Please keep leaving everything as it is.
- Wait for the below 2 messages:
- upgrade succeeded
- Device reset succeeded

Trouble Shooting

In case of any issues on device firmware upgrade, please check below and try again.

- Check if all files are unzipped correctly and at the same directory (Any zip file reader won’t work.)
- Reboot your PC
- Check USB cable if it does support data communication
- Remove USB Hub if any
- Change USB Port
- Turn off any Virus utility, especially when unzipping the package

- Check if you can use your ES100 as an USB DAC


- You should be able to have audio stream through ES100 from PC or MAC over USB. (No Device Driver needed)
- If you can’t, please check the USB cable.

Trouble Shooting: Check the Device Connection in DFU mode

- In Windows, Go to Device Manager → Human Interface Devices


- Below two devices SHOULD be displayed
- HID-compliant vendor-defined device
- USB Input Device
- If Not, Please check the USB cable again
