Introduction
One of the most difficult things to deal with in life is the death of a
loved one. Even for the Christians, death is a part of life. Unlike they
that do not believe, the Christian has a blessed hope – that is the
return of the Savior Jesus to catch up His Church and bring them to
eternal life with Him and God the Father in Heaven. It is interesting
that the one thing we are certain about in this life is that it will end
yet when that happens we are never prepared. Emotionally we just
don’t seem to be well equipped to deal with such a loss, we either fall
apart or head straight for denial. But, in reality, falling apart or
going through denial is all part of the normal process of grieving.
Grief is a normal, healthy response to loss and we need to understand
how to best deal with it in order to provide comfort to someone who is
grieving. And, as a matter of fact, loss can come in many forms. As
devastating as the death of a loved one can be, any life altering
experience can trigger a sense or feeling of loss that will trigger the
same sense of grief and will send that person through the same 7
stages of grief as experienced through the loss of a loved one. “Other
losses include the loss of your health or the health of someone you care
about, or the end of a relationship, such as a marriage or even
friendship. Healing from a loss involves coming to terms with the loss
and the meaning of the loss in your life. ”So the question is how do we
deal with or what do we say to a close friend or family member who
has just experienced a loss? Many of us have no idea what to say or
how to handle the situation. It is difficult to know what words you
should say to comfort someone grieving. I think it is natural to feel
uncomfortable and unsure in this type of situation. We have so much
fear wrapped up around death or any kind of loss in our society that
it is difficult to know how to handle our own emotional response much
less know how to support another person who is grieving. This is one
way of paying our last respect to our beloved ( name of the departed )
and our simple way of comforting the bereaved.

Reading of the Bible Verse

A reading from the book of John Chapter 14: Verses 1-8

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My
Father’s house are many [a]mansions; if it were not so, [b]I would have told you. I go
to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again
3

and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And where I go
you know, and the way you know.”
5 Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we
know the way?”
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the

Father except through Me.

7 “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you

know Him and have seen Him.”

8 Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.”

Prayers of the Faithful
Let our response be “Lord, please hear our prayers “

1. For ( name of the deceased ) in your hands, O Lord, we humbly

entrust him, in this life you embraced him with your tender
love; deliver him now from every evil and bid him eternal rest
we pray …
2. ( name of the deceased 0 passed away: welcome him into
paradise, where there will be no sorrow, no weeping or pain,
but fullness of peace and joy with your Son and the Holy Spirit
forever and ever, we pray …
3. You hold time within your hands, and see it all, from beginning
to end. Please keep and carry these precious people in their
sadness and loss. Cover them with your great wings of love, give
their weary hearts rest and their minds sound sleep. Lord, lift
their eyes so that they may catch a glimpse of eternity, and be
comforted by the promise of heaven, we pray…
4. Lord, at the moment nothing seems to be able to help the loss we
feel. Our heart is broken and our spirit mourns.
All we know is that Your grace is sufficient. This day, this hour,
Moment by moment we choose to lean on You,
For when we are at our weakest Your strength is strongest.
We pour out our grief to You And praise You that on one
glorious day when all suffering is extinguished and love has
conquered, we shall walk together again so we pray…
4

5. O merciful Father, who has taught us in thy holy Word that you
do not willingly afflict or grieve the children of men:
Look with pity upon the sorrows of you servant for whom our
prayers are offered. Remember him, O Lord, in mercy,
nourish his soul with patience, comfort him with a sense of thy
goodness, lift up thy countenance upon him, and
give him peace; we pray…

Universal Prayer

Prayer for the Departed

"Eternal God, we praise you for the great company of all those
who have finished their course in faith and now rest from their labor.
We praise you for those dear to us whom we name in our hearts
before you. Especially we praise you for [Name], whom you have
graciously received into your presence. To all of these, grant your
peace. Let perpetual light shine upon them; and help us so to believe
where we have not seen, that your presence may lead us through our
years, and bring us at last with them into the joy of your home not
made with hands but eternal in the heavens; through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen."

Closing Song
"Lift Up Your Hands"

Life is not all that bad, my friends, hmm When you feel the world
If you believe in yourself Is tumblin' down on you,
If you believe there's Someone And you have no one
Who walks through life without you That you can hold on to,
You'll never be alone Just face the rising sun
Just learn to reach out, And you'll see hope,
And open your heart And there's no need to run
Lift up your hands to God, Lift up your hands to God,
And He'll show you the way. And He'll make you feel all right.
And He said, "Cast your burdens upon Me And He said, "Cast your burdens upon Me
Those who are heavily laden, Those who are heavily laden,
Come to Me, all of you who are tired Come to Me, all of you who are tired
Of carrying heavy loads, Of carrying heavy loads,
For the yoke I will give you is easy For the yoke I will give you is easy
And My burden is light, And My burden is light,
Come to Me and I will give you rest." Come to Me and I will give you rest."
