Course Outline :

LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS

OPEN ENDED LABS ~ Unguided lab experiments

A) Belt Friction Tester (formal report - group submission)

The objective of this experiments is to calculate the coefficient of friction for the given
Belt type (flat or V belt).
This unguided experiment require a group of student to work towards the objective
given and come out with their own procedures, analysis, discussion and conclusion
throughout the experiment conducted. Prior running the experiment, a lab manual need
to be prepared to assure the readiness of each team to conduct the experiment.

B) Cam and Tappet (formal report – group submission)

The objective of this experiment is to compare the throw, velocity and acceleration
profile of two types of cams with flat follower.
This unguided experiment require a group of student to work towards the objective
given and come out with their own procedures and analysis throughout the experiment.
By end of the session, the group need to submit a post lab assessment to reflect their
Understanding about the experiment conducted.

GUIDED Lab Experiments

C) Slotted Link (short report - individual submission)

The objective of this experiment is to investigate the motion of a slotted link and to see
if the piston rod moves with Simple Harmonics Motion

D) Slider Crank Chain (informal report – group submission)

The objectives of this experiment are to obtain a graph of piston velocity against crank
angle using the method of instantaneous centers, assuming that the crank rotates at a
constant angular velocity, to obtain the crank angles which correspond to the maximum
piston velocity, and to show that for a slider crank chain the piston motion tends to
approach simple harmonic motion with increasing values of connecting rod/crank ratio.

E) Crank and Slotted Lever (QRM) (informal report – group submission)

The objective of this experiment is to investigate the kinematics motion of a Crank and
Slotted Lever Quick Return mechanism. The investigation is to show that it is indeed a
quick return mechanism and to evaluate the increase in efficiency that this would offer if
applied to a machine tool.

F) Hooke’s Coupling (informal report – group submission)

The objective of this experiment is to investigate the variation in displacement for a
single joint at various angles and to show that when two joints are used together with the
same intermediate angle, the variation in displacement is cancelled out.

CAD / CAE SOFTWARE

i. 2D - SOLIDWORKS Simulation Tutorial and Assignment

SOLIDWORKS Simulation is the latest instalment to the Mechanical Engineering
Department simulation package. The tutorial is prepared to cover as much the software
can offer, starting from the model preparation, sensitivity and optimization.

ii. 3D - CREO Simulation Tutorial

CREO Simulation is the extension of CREO available in Mechanical Department CFD
Lab. CREO enables the user to simulates and do structural analysis using the FEM
scheme. Tutorial is prepared to cover as much the software can offer, starting from the
model preparation, until optimization of parameters.

iii. CREO Simulation Test

Students are tested to produce a simulation and structural analysis based on the given
drawing and specification. The test is individual and specification is unique for every
student.

iv. CREO/ SolidWorks Project

Students are required to produce a simulation and structural analysis of pre-existing
parts or components. They are free to choose any part or components and recommend a
modification to enhance the structural integrity. Students are encouraged to comes out
with own design and justification will be made using CREO.

Malaysian Qualifications Framework Learning Outcome Domains (MQF LOD) & iCGPA

The Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015-2025 (Higher Education) or the MEB (HE) (Ministry of Higher Education, 2015) is formulated
based on the vision and aspiration of Malaysia Education Development Plan (2013 – 2015) and National Higher Education Strategic Plan (or
Pelan Strategik Pengajian Tinggi Negara (PSPTN)) in educating students who are knowledgeable, skilled and talented to face the challenges of
the 21st century.

Shift 1 of the blueprint aims to foster graduates who are holistic, balanced and entrepreneurial in line with the National Education
Philosophy.

One of the initiatives in Shift 1 is the implementation of the integrated assessment system which materialises student holistic attainment
based on the learning experiences in higher education known as integrated CGPA or iCGPA.

iCGPA illustrates attainment of eight domains of learning outcomes listed in the Malaysian Qualifications Framework.

Malaysian Qualifications Framework Learning Outcome Domains (MQF LOD)

Domain
MQF1 Knowledge
MQF2 Practical Skills
MQF3 Social Skills and Responsibilities
MQF4 Values, Attitude and Professionalism
MQF5 Communication, Leadership and Teamwork Skills
MQF6 Problem Solving and Scientific Skills
MQF7 Information Management and Lifelong Learning Skills
MQF8 Managerial and Entrepreneurial Skills
