• Linux is an operation system from Unix family.

• The development of Linux was started from 1991 as
an open source Unix kernel project.
• There are different Linux distribution available on the
market.
• Linux was originally developed as a free operating
system for Intel x86-based personal Computers.
• It has since been ported to more Computer hardware
platforms than any other operating system.
• It is a leading operating system on Servers and other
big iron systems such as mainframe Computers and
Supercomputer.

The default mode for the vim editor is the command mode. When you perform an i,
o, or a command, the vim editor switches to the edit mode. After editing a file, press
Escape to return the vim editor to the command mode. When in the command
mode, you can save the file and quit the vim editor.

The following example shows how to switch modes in the vim editor:

1. Perform the vim filename command to create a file. You are automatically
in the command mode.
2. Type the i command to insert text. The i command switches the vim editor
to the edit mode.
3. Press Escape to return to the command mode.
4. Perform the :wq command to save the file and exit the vim editor.

The syntax for the vim command is:

If the system crashes while you are editing a file, you can use the
-r option to recover the file.

To recover a file, perform the command:

vim –r filename

Using the vim Command

Page 87
Spectrum PowerTM 7
Day 2 – Linux administration Part.2

The view command enables you to view files in the read-only mode. It
invokes the vim editor with the read-only option. Although most of the vim
commands are available, you cannot save changes to the file.

The syntax for the view command is:

view filename

Or you can use

vim –R filename

The file opens in read-only mode to prevent accidental overwriting of the

contents of the file.

The ACL mask

The ACL mask defines the maximum permissions that can be granted to named
users, the group-owner, and named group. It does not restrict the permissions
of the file owner or other users.

umask

The umask value affects the initial permissions for files and directories when
they are created.
The initial permission value specified by system at the time of file creation is
0666(rw-rw-rw-), and 0777(rwxrwxrwx) for directory.

File permission = 0666 – umask
