SINGAPORE WORKPLACE SAFETY & HEALTH REPORT


The fatal injury rate remained at 1.2 per 100,000 employed persons with 1 fatal injury
lesser than 2017; but numbers and rates of major and minor injuries increased

WORRYING TREND FOR CONSTRUCTION


Workplace fatalities in Construction increased from 2.6 to 3.1 per 100,000
workers; Number of major injuries seen to be on the rise

6 CONSTRUCTION DEATHS SINCE START OF THIS YEAR


WORKER FOUND DEAD IN LIFT CAR

On 14 January 2019, a worker was using a lift to transport demolition debris


down from the 8th floor when the lift started descending at a high speed and
landed into the lift pit. The worker was pronounced dead at the scene. He was
part of a team carrying out lift upgrading works at the residential building.

WORKER DIED WHILE CARRYING OUT PAINTING WORKS

On 22 January 2019, two workers were using rope access equipment to paint
the exterior of a building. Whilst at work, a passing vehicle snagged the tail-end
of one of the ropes, causing the rope to snap. One of the workers fell and
landed on the ground. The worker was pronounced dead at the scene of the
accident. 6

WORKER KILLED BY TIPPER TRUCK

On 22 February 2019 around 8:20am, a site supervisor was at the cross junction
of an open access road within a construction worksite, when a tipper truck hit
him as it was turning. He was knocked down and sustained head injuries. The
site supervisor was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene by attending
paramedics. 7

WORKER FELL WITH COLLAPSED FLOOR SLAB

On 4 March 2019 around 1.40pm, two workers were hacking a parapet wall on
the second storey of a private dwelling when the floor slab they were standing
on suddenly gave way. The workers fell to the ground and one was trapped
underneath the concrete debris. The trapped worker was subsequently
pronounced dead at the scene. 8

WORKER STRUCK BY SHEETPILE – 9 MAR 19

On 9 March 2019 around 8.30am, a sheet pile was being lifted by a crawler
crane when it dislodged from its lifting clamp and fell, hitting a worker who was
working nearby. The worker was pronounced dead at the scene.

9 May 2019

6 CONSTRUCTION DEATHS SINCE START OF THIS YEAR


WORKER FELL FROM CANOPY ROOF

On 09 May 2019, the Deceased and 3 other workers were installing glass panels
for a canopy at the 2nd level balcony area of a private dwelling. The Deceased
was last seen by his co-workers to be standing on the canopy at a height of
about 3m. The deceased was pronounced dead at the scene.
