TOOL DESCRIPTION
The casing collar locator (CCL) is a magnetic device which locates collars, joints, packers,
centralizers, etc. The CCL detects changes in metal volume as it moves through tubing or
casing. The field around the magnets, located within the tool, is disturbed and induces a low
frequency voltage in a coil mounted between the magnets. The passive CCL’s described herein
are considered shooting CCL’s.

• It is recommended that non-grounded coil CCL’s are used with Free Point tools and
grounded coil CCL’s be used for perforating.
• One can determine if an assembled CCL is grounded or not by checking the end contacts.
A grounded CCL will have one slotted contact.
• 1 3/8” & 1 7/16” CCL’s use the same coil and magnet assemblies.
• 2 1/8” and 2 3/4” CCL’s use the same coil and magnet assemblies.
• 3 1/8” & 3 1/4” CCL’s use the same coil and magnet assemblies.
• Non-grounded and grounded CCL’s can be used with the Free Point tools.
• The double diodes should register 500-680 Ohms when measured top to bottom and bottom
to top.
• The resistor sub is to provide a ground for the small diameter CCL with no ground.
• The combination diode sub is intended for use with Free Point tools when using shot rod
assemblies.

RECOMMENDED PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

Preventive maintenance consists primarily of:

1. Mechanical inspection of tool electronics, chassis and subs. See Electrical

Specifications for resistance readings for specific tools. Check the coil resistance and
diode resistance (check diodes twice switching positive and negative leads)
2. Sensor performance. Connect the CCL to the panel or meter and pass a magnetic metal
object (such as a steel wrench, note that aluminum is not magnetic) across the length of
the CCL. The meter should respond to the movement of the metal object.
3. O-ring inspections & replacement. See disassembly section for step-by-step directions
on replacing O-rings.

If the tool utilizes O-rings they should be replaced after any of the following.
1. When the tool is operated at pressures exceeding 50% of the tool rating.
2. When the tool has been used for five operations in a well
3. The tool has been used for an accumulation of 5,000 ft. or more of depth
4. The well temperature is 66% of the tool rating

Mechanical inspection of the tool electronics and chassis and sensor for loose or broken
connections should be made whenever o-rings are inspected or replace.

Upon receipt of a tool, the sensors should be checked and the results recorded. These recorded
results will serve as a base for documenting sensor performance.

Disassembly/Assembly
AES casing collar locators are simple to disassemble and service. All sizes have a coil
assembly and housing. There are small differences between different sizes.

5/8” to 1”

The above picture is of a disassembled 1” (grounded) AES CCL. The coil and magnet
assembly (4) fits inside the housing (1) and is not fixed to the housing in any way. The thread
protectors (5) keep the coil assembly inside the housing when in storage. Note the temperature
indicator (part #HOO0151) on the coil included in all AES CCL’s. When in use the connector
screws into the threads in the housing and inserts into the connectors of the coil assembly which
holds it in place in the housing. 1” and smaller CCL’s are constructed in this manner.

1 3/8” to 1 5/8”

The above picture is of a disassembled 1 5/8” AES CCL. This design is the same for 1 3/8” and
1 7/16” AES CCL’s. It is basically the same as the 1” CCL above except lock rings (6) are used
to fix the coil and magnet assembly (4) in the housing (1).

1 11/16” to 3 1/4”

The above picture is of a disassembled 1 11/16” AES CCL. The 1 11/16”, 2 1/8”, 2 3/4”,
3 1/8”, and 3 1/4” AES CCL share a similar design. The coil and magnet assembly (4) is held
in the housing (1) by a top (2) and bottom (3) sub. The O-rings of the subs and coil assembly
should be inspected and replaced regularly. See recommended maintenance on page 4.

Safety glasses are highly recommended for disassembly and assembly

General Disassembly:
1. Remove upper sub (2) and lower sub (3) if present.
2. If sub has a contact, check it for short and continuity.
3. Remove lock rings from each side of housing if present.
4. Remove coil assembly (4) from housing (1).
5. Inspect lead wires and O-rings (if present) for damage. Check coil and diode resistance.

Reassembly:
Note: To prevent galling of threads, apply small amount high temperature multi-purpose
grease (BOO0113) to all threads. Apply film of grease to O-rings on upper and lower subs
where applicable.
1. Replace O-rings according to the guidelines on page 4, where applicable.
2. Check assembly (4) with ohmmeter for coil resistance and diode continuity with
ohmmeter according to the table on page 6.
3. Place housing (1) in vise; insert CCL coil and magnet assembly (4) into housing.
5. Install and tighten top and bottom subs where applicable.
6. Install lock rings where applicable.
7. Complete final check with ohmmeter for proper ground, coil resistance, and double
diode.
8. Test senor by passing a magnetic metal object (not aluminum) across the housing while
each contact is connected to the leads of an ammeter.
9. Apply film of grease to threads and O-rings of thread protectors (5) and install on
housing.
