Problem
How to maintain desirable classroom discipline?
Analysis
For the past two months, teachers in grade one find out that classroom discipline is not easy, pupils
begin to be unruly when teacher is talking to someone or when she is not around.
Solution
The following suggestions and tips can be most helpful to the grade one teachers, and even
experienced teachers who are poor in classroom discipline may benefit from it;
1. Teachers and pupils together can plan how to make their room attractive.
2. Teacher himself should be the model of courteous behavior.
3. Never let the class know that you cannot control them.
4. Establish good routine habits to detect any signs of boredom, discontent or misbehavior.
5. The atmosphere can do a lot to the morale and work of the class. A pleasant atmosphere
generates good thoughts and ideas.
6. Teacher should be friendly, helpful, cheerful and humane.
7. Children should be taught to wait for their turn.
8. Mastery of the subject matter is an important factor in discipline to avoid children from getting
restless.
9. Punishment meted out can be turned commensurate to the offense only when the cause of the
offense is known.
10. It is easy to solve problems of discipline if the causes of misbehavior are properly diagnosed
and studied.
Implementation
Evet teacher in grade one would well take stock of their ability to discipline their class by frequent self-
evaluation. They should find out which measures are effective and which are not.

C. Reflection
The classroom cannot function well without the teacher. The success of the activities in the classroom
depends on the ability of the teacher as classroom manager. He takes care of two aspects of classroom
management, namely care of routine and classroom discipline. It has been stressed time and again that
good classroom discipline is indispensable to an effective learning situation. All teachers old or young,
old or new in the service are faced with problems of discipline.
