OUR STORY
Since its founding in 1979, the Singapore Symphony
Orchestra (SSO) has been Singapore’s flagship
orchestra, touching lives through classical music and
providing the heartbeat of the cultural scene in the
cosmopolitan city-state. In addition to its subscription
series concerts, the orchestra is well-loved for its
outdoor and community appearances, and its significant
role educating the young people of Singapore. The
SSO has also earned an international reputation for its
orchestral virtuosity, having garnered sterling reviews for
its overseas tours and many successful recordings.

and composers are regularly showcased in the concert
season. This has been a core of the SSO's programming
philosophy from the very beginning under Choo Hoey,
who was Music Director from 1979 to 1996.

2019/20 SE ASON THEMES
British Journeys
We begin this season by reflecting on the bicentennial of modern Singapore,
which we marked in the previous season with music from the European Age
of Discovery. This season, we look at Great Britain and the sea-faring journeys
that started and ended there – from the works of European musicians who
were inspired by their travels to London and Scotland, to those of British
composers in the 19th to early 20th century writing about their travels and the
world around them.
Voice of A City
Our centuries of history give a country many things to reflect on. For us, we
look at how the arts – music specifically – is a vital influence in the formation
of a city’s cultural soul. In addition to the music of Singapore at our annual
National Day Concert, we explore music inspired by such great global cities
as Leipzig, Dresden, Rome, and Manhattan.

SSO MORE THAN JUST CONCERTS
Nothing gets us more excited than hearing the words, “This is my first classical concert.”
The person may be a young child or a working adult, a beneficiary from a charity or a donor
who wants to get to know the orchestra. Whenever someone catches our performances for the
first time, we are reminded of our mission – to spread the love for music.
Sharing music is not just about filling seats. We also want to nurture talent and enrich our
diverse communities. We organise public events like talks, open rehearsals and workshops,
and give specialised music training to aspiring young musicians. This is why each year around
45,000 people get to catch our concerts outside of concert halls – at venues like public parks
and schools halls.
It is also why we set up the Young Symphony Explorers initiative – to spark the love of music in
young people. Everyone should get to experience the thrill of a live symphony performance.
