The University of Rochester Ain Center for Entrepreneurship was

selected to design and deliver the innovative RAF Scholar educational
program. Launched by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation grant
awarded to the University in 2003, the Center was renamed the Ain Center
for Entrepreneurship in 2015 in recognition of Mark S. Ain (MBA ’67) and
his wife Carolyn for their visionary leadership and support of
entrepreneurial students University-wide. The Ain Center serves to
identify and create new partnerships with students, alumni, local
businesses and non-profit organizations, coordinates and publicizes
University-based experiences including courses and signature
programming, and encourages collaboration among the schools engaged
in entrepreneurship education throughout the University of Rochester.

The Ain Center for Entrepreneurship is led by Duncan T. Moore, Ph.D.,

Vice Provost for Entrepreneurship. In addition to Dr. Moore’s scholarly
publications, patents, and successful ventures, Moore helped design the
one-year Technical Entrepreneurship and Management (TEAM) master’s
program. TEAM is designed for students with an engineering, science, or
mathematics undergraduate degree who wish to pursue a master’s-level
technical education in combination with business and leadership courses.
Dr. Moore has also supported technical entrepreneurship in developing
countries, conducting entrepreneurship workshops in South Africa,
Argentina, Peru, Ireland, Italy, Indonesia, Mexico, Kenya, and Japan for
scientists and engineers in developing economies.

CIEE Romanian - American Foundation

The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) is an

American non-profit, non-governmental organization. Since its founding
in 1947, CIEE has helped thousands of international and American
students and professionals gain the knowledge and skills necessary to
live and work in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world by
offering the most comprehensive, relevant, and valuable exchange
programs available.
In addition to its role as one of the largest J-1 Visa sponsors designated
by the U.S. Department of State, CIEE administers programming for the
Baltic-American Freedom Foundation and the Hungarian-American
Enterprise Scholarship Fund. The Romanian-American Foundation
(RAF) selected CIEE to administer the RAF Scholar program in
entrepreneurship education.

“Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati (UGAL) is a Romanian
comprehensive medium-sized university with 14 faculties, 6 of them
representing the technical domain, one being in the economics field, 6
representing social sciences, arts and humanities and one integrating all
of these domain. Among the Romanian universities, UGAL is ranked in
the first tier and is considered an important educational, research and
cultural institution. During its 70 years' existence, it has achieved prestige
both at national and international levels.
At present, UGAL has 12,500 students enrollment in bachelor (68),
master (52) and doctoral degree programs (13) and 700 teaching staff.
The educational programs developed under the Faculty of Economics
and Business Management are the most advanced ones within UGAL in
terms of the entrepreneurship curricula while the technical faculties are
reorganizing their curricula to keep the pace with the leader and with the
market needs. Besides the entrepreneurial education provided by the
faculties, the Students Entrepreneurship Society (SAS-UGAL), founded
in August, 2017, encourages UGAL' s students to view entrepreneurship
as a carrier opportunity and helps them contribute to the emergence of
an entrepreneurial economy.

Romanian-American
Foundation
The Romanian-American Foundation (RAF) is a philanthropic
organization with a mission to promote conditions for a sustainable
market economy and democratic society that provides access to
opportunity for all segments of the Romanian population. Administered
by a local team based in Bucharest and an international Board of
Trustees, the Foundation contributes to fostering innovation,
developing entrepreneurship, improving education, and promoting
a strong civil society in Romania.
The Romanian-American Foundation was founded in 2009, as a
successor to the Romanian-American Enterprise Fund (RAEF).
Created in 1994 by the United States Congress, RAEF pioneered a
combination of investment and development activities that proved very
successful in the Romanian market place.
Starting with 2016, RAF financially supported the RAF Scholar program,
which was designed to facilitate entrepreneurship education across
Romania’s higher education system with the objective of equipping the
emerging Romanian workforce with the skills, knowledge, and networks
needed to launch or grow innovative businesses serving a tech-savvy
market. The program provides funding for professors from Romanian
technical universities to spend a semester in residence at the University
of Rochester studying entrepreneurship, innovative curriculum design,
and entrepreneurship ecosystem development. In addition to
educational background, current academic appointment, and willingness
to advance educational innovation, applicants are required to
demonstrate their university’s support for implementing education
upon their return to Romania.
The RAF Scholar program is funding a total of 18 RAF Scholars over the
three-year life of the program. The 2017 and 2018 cohorts are sponsored
through the Fulbright-RAF Scholar Award. In 2017, from “Dunarea de
Jos” University of Galati, professor Anca Ioana NICOLAU participated in
the program.
