KHIM TAN
Story 1: How he started
Khim started off as an engineer in late 1990s. He worked in a genset company, in consultant firm, in a
spring factory, in a cooling tower company all with less than 6 months stints, except the cooling tower
company where he served more than 2 years. I think all because he got an opportunities to run
outside the office and factory. The rest of it are just mundane factory job, which cannot satisfy his
outgoing nature.
Btw, Khim’s is one of MAS recruits for their pilot trainee program halfway through his form 6 and have
passed all RMAF aptitude test ready to be enrolled. He made his life’s 1st the wrong choice by
choosing MAS to RMAF because the MAS training program was cancelled 1 week before he is
suppose to fly to Australia to start his training. Anyway, this may be a pleasure in disguise otherwise
we may not see him here today.
The thing that got him started his entrepreneur’s program is when his boss handed 3 projects to him
to handle concurrently. One in Pasir Gudang, one in Kuantan and another in Penang, all this by giving
him a kancil to travel around for site visits. Monday in Penang, Tuesday/Wednesday in JB, Thursday
in Kuantan and Friday back to KL to do reporting.
6 months later, he decided that is it…. He needs to start something himself and take ownership of his
own life and career.
Then he searched around for business opportunities in the newspaper (yes newspaper in that time).
And he found a course “How To Make Money Online” by Allan Cheong, his 1st online guru and paid
RM5k for the course.
Story 2: How and what he learnt
Allan thought him how to sell digital products, i.e. ebooks, affiliates, clickbank, affiliate junction and
such. Then he tried to apply what he learnt, got his 1st ebook title from project guternberg. Repackage
it, sell it, using google seo, adwords, blogs and such, no facebook yet. Managed to SOLD 1……. In 1
year!!
When he almost gave up, he spoke to his friend Richard who owned a shop in Low Yat to explore the
option of selling physical product online. The product he chose to start is Laptop Skin (sticker). He sell
it in Lelong for local market and ebay for international market. The arrangement with Richard is 50/50
profit sharing, where Khim will do all the selling and Richard will supply and deliver the products.
The 1st surprise came in 3 days later. HE GOT HIS 1ST SALES!!.
Imagine the excitement of getting sales in 3 days vs 1 year!! Oh ya! Most of his comrades has given
up and blame the guru that the technique is not working lah and kena tipu lah and such. Luckily I’m
not the type that give up and blame others.
Story 3: Business soars!
After the 1st sales, he started to add more skus into his lelong and ebay stores. But skin is still the
hottest selling item because there’s only 4 people selling it in ebay.com. 2 Hongkies, One
Singaporean, and one Malaysian :). The reason I tot of this product in the 1st place is because I think

people want to be special, they want to show off their unique taste to their friends and nothing is more
affordable and simpler than a sticker on their laptop.
Btw, I got my sticker at RM21 from Richard and sold it for USD39 in ebay. My worst sales day is 1217
pieces a day and best is 127 pieces a day!! And was enjoying that for more than 4 years! Until
Richard cannot cope and I started to import it from China…..wow and my cost is only…..guess how
much?.... RM7!!
One of the thing I can still remember vividly is, my laptop was on 24 hours of the day and i change my
email notification from Paypal “You’ve got payment” to sound like “Kaching”.
Managed to bought my 1st house during that time.
Story 4: Business drop!
In around 2009, China sellers started to invade ebay…… and price started to drop from USD39 to 29
to 21 to 19 to 17 to 7 to sometimes 1…. Crazy people.
At around the same time, i started to explore other options and met my partner who is very much into
training business
He'll organise class and I'll teach about eBay selling. But we didn't set our expectation clear in the
beginning. I wanted to use the training as an entry point, as a way to get customers, whereas he only
wants to make money from the training. So, the partnerships rift drift further and further until we broke
off in early 2012.
Btw, during that time we still managed to sell “cash flow” board game set in the thousands every
month. Don't ask.me whether it is genuine or not
Story 5: Breaking off and start all over again.
After the early 2012 break off, I was unemployed for more than 9 months. During that 9 months I was
searching for new ventures and trying hard to look for business opportunity other than internet related
biz. Have tried many direct selling like ecosway, nu skin and such. But to no avail, I still see the
potential in online business.
I tell myself, I wanted to do something different from marketplace selling that I've done previously.
Then I searched and looked around what else other ookl are doing.
Then I found Facebook.
I looked at Chinese language people selling, they mostly posted in groups and the comments they got
are mostly in the hundreds max.
Then I looked at the Malay language posting. Oh my oh my…. The comments they garnered are in
the thousands of not tens of thousands! OMG!
How can a single post got more than 12k comments! Unbelievable.

There goes my quest to search for a guru again to learn this skill.
Then one day in Oct 2012 a friend of mine took me to meet sifufbads. After meeting sifu Jamal, I
decided there and then that I'll berguru with him.
I attended his course somewhere in Nov 2012
Story 6: A good start in Facebook
After learning from sifu, with a capital of about RM500, I brought in about 2030 sets of genie bra from
Taobao and started selling it in Facebook using sifufbads method.
My cost for one set is about RM26, selling retail at RM99 like other sellers.
I did something different, I packaged it to a set of 10 and sell it at only RM36 pet set, making only
RM10,. It people need to buy minimum 10 sets.
The sales pickup fast, and without topping up any additional capital other than the initial RM500,
anyone wants to guess how much is my overall sales for year 2013?
I GOT RM1.6m revenue in 2013! Unbelievable! My 1st million in my life. Selling in eBay only got me
the most USD1520k per month, not millions.

● When mum did not think I can make a living selling handbags
Mum was not confident I could make a living from selling branded handbags. She asked me how
many handbags a lady will buy, it was not like food business. Eventually people queued up to my
handbag sale and banks became my customers, she no longer ask how many handbags a lady will
buy.
● Breaking up with my fiancé was one of the best things that happened to me
January 2015, I proposed. Eight months later just when I was about to sign the papers, fiancé wasn’t
ready. Apparently she and her family did not think I was ready financially. Was even asked to find a
job. My new training business was far from doing well. She could not accept my situation while I

could not accept a wife who wanted me to be employed. I broke up after 4.5 years. It was the best
thing that happened to me, giving me the greatest motivation in life to publish a bestselling book.
● Dad asking me to take his money before he says “Goodbye”
Dad saw that I did not do well in business and I broke up with my fiancé. He knows I was down
financially and emotionally. He told me that one day when he passes on, I’ll inherit something but it
won’t make me rich. When the day comes he believes I no longer needs his money, so I must take
his money now. I did and with his money I could focus on writing a book and my book became
bestseller.
● No more cash for marketing after buying stocks
When I was running my handbag business, we had to buy branded bags from factory outlets using
credit cards. We were inexperienced. We did not factor in marketing cost. After buying stocks and
paying for deposits to run events, printing, etc we had no more cash left to market our new business.
We scrambled to find ways to market our business. Then I realized that we could use Facebook
because we have hundreds of friends who can buy from us or can tell their friends to buy from us.
● I gambled by picking the photo that everyone disliked as my book cover
I asked my friends to help me select the best photo for my book cover and also the most unpopular
photo so I know which one not to use. The irony was that somehow I followed my heart and picked
that most unpopular one because that was very me, despite what everyone voted. Surprisingly when
it was out, everyone said they really love it because it is so unique. Sometimes the best answer is in
you, not with others.
● “Who will buy your book on entrepreneurship when your business is failing?”
I posted a photo of me in the bookstore in front of the Top 10 Bestseller on Facebook. I wrote “Can
you see it?” Many friends supported me knowing I wanted to write a book except one. She asked me
who would buy my book when my business was far from the definition of success. Apparently people
bought my book not because of my success but of my lessons. Dare to dream!
● Birthday wish granted
I had a big birthday wish that year after my shocking break up with my fiancé. I know everyone will
wish me happy birthday on Facebook but there was really not significant. I was determined to turn my
birthday into a marketing strategy. I posted my book cover design and channelled all the wished to
my post. Hundreds wished me happy birthday and 22 of them wanted to buy my book, which I had
not even started to write.
● My TV Interview post , “Macam Yes”
I was invited to be interviewed on NTV7 for a lady’s program. I thought it was a good chance for me
to be seen by my then potential clients, ladies. The topic was on health , aging men syndrome which I
knew nothing about. I only asked that the producer show my name as CEO and my handbag
company and she agreed. The photo of me on TV was posted on Facebook and people wanted to
buy handbags from me.

● Nobody believes that I am an introvert anymore
At networking events, I would hide at the corner or quickly grab food so I don’t have to talk to people.
Mum said don’t talk when you eat. It was a shield. Then business was very slow. Felt like nobody
knows me. I started to learn to take Selfie. Initially I was so worried about how others would see me.
Why is Marcus so full of himself? For my business survival sake, I decided to just do it. I was
surprised. I received many likes. I did not bother anymore if anyone had anything negative to say. I
just do it and I feel good about myself.
