MICROMACHINING

ABSTRACT
Micro-machining is the most basic technology for the production of such miniature parts and
components.Micro machining is defined as the ability to produce features with the
dimensionsfrom 1 m to 999 m or when the volume of the material removed is at the micro
level. In recent years, manufacturing industry has witnessed a rapid increase
in demand for micro-products and micro-components in many industrial sectors
including the electronics, optics, medical, biotechnology and automotive sectors.
Examples of applications include medical implants, drug delivery systems, In recent years,

MICROMILLING
Micro-milling is the removal of a small thickness (1 inch or less) of existing asphalt concrete prior to
placing a surface treatment. The difference between cold milling and micro-milling is the texture left
on the existing pavement. Micro-milling provides for a smoother surface than cold milling and is
typically used before a slurry seal or micro surfacing treatment.
Micro-milling is performed for the same reason to why wood is often sanded prior to painting.
Micro-milling removes old, oxidized pavement and previous surface treatments thus providing a
surface which is more receptive to bonding to the new surface treatment. Micro-milling also results
in a smoother ride and neat, clean edges near the gutters or other concrete roadway improvements
for the new surface treatment to join

PRINCIPLE OF MIRO MILLING MACHINE USING
DIAMOND TIP

Principle of micromachining using the orbital motion of the diamond tip

Figs. A and B show the schematic of the micro milling process and the tip’s
orbital motion based the micro machining process, respectively. The pyramidal
tip is used as the example. The symbol ‘V’ and the arrow represent the moving
direction of the work piece during machining. The micro milling process in Fig.
A, shows the micro cutter rotating around its centre, usually driven by a high
speed spindle . The section of the micro channel machined by this process is a
rectangle. The width of the channel is determined by the diameter of the micro
cutter used. As shown in Fig. 3.1B, the pyramidal diamond tip revolves around
an orbital center. This motion is realized by a 3D nano positioning stage in this
study, which will be explained in the next section. The section of the micro
channel machined by this method is trapezoidal and influenced by the diamond
tip shape. The width of the channel is basically determined by the radius of the
orbital motion. The radius is changed according to the moving range of the
nanopositioning stage. But for the micromilling process, it is impossible to
machine the channel with a width less than the diameter of the microcutter. The
relative motion between the tool and the workpiece in three dimensions can be
realized in the same way with the conventional micromilling process. The
coarse moving stages can be used. The main difference between the
micromilling process and the orbital motion based micromachining process is
that no high speed and high accuracy air bearing spindle is employed in the
latter condition.
