PREFACE

First at all, give thanks for God’s love and grace for us.

Thanks to God for helping me and give me chance to finish this assighment
timely. And I would like to say thank you to Mr. Tohirin as the lecturer that
always teaches us and give much knowledge about how to practice English
well.

This assighment is the one of English task that composed of Practical English
Usage English As Second Language I realized this assighment is not perfect.
But I hope it can be useful for us. Critics and suggestion is needed here to make
this assighment be better.

Hopefully we as a student in “Pamulang University” can work more

professional by using English as the second language whatever we done. Thank

CHAPTER I
PRELIMINARY

A. Background
English is the international language. By mastering English well, then we
will be able to communicate with other nations in this world. In addition,
we will also be able to increase our insight and knowledge for the
betterment of our nation and country, for we will be able to read English
literature, listen to foreign radio broadcasts, and to install other science
films. Thus, ultimately we can master the knowledge in all fields.

Each language must have rules or often we call the term grammar of
each, as well as with English, a lot of rules that must be considered in its
use, especially in the field of writing. Therefore, the author tries to
present four rules of the many rules of the English language, in addition
to meet the tasks of college also aims hopefully this short article can add
our insight about the English language.

From the identification of the above problem, the writer of course aims to
explain or explain these points, in accordance with the knowledge we get,
both from the source book, internet and from our teachers. Hopefully it

CHAPTER 2
CONTENT

A. Function Usage of a Would

Would is used to speak about repeated actions in the past, that no longer
happen in the present.

We will also explain the functions of Would and Used to. Why are we
also going to explain about used to??? Because Both are used to
recount the habits that are on The past is no longer in use today.

• “Would” describe a sequence or series of activities

• IF "Used to" describes an activity but not a series of activities.

We will give example into sentence :

I Used to live in Paris

When I was a kid , I would go out with my friends.Then in the
evening , We would gather in the mosque.

B. Formula “Usage of Would”

Example :

(+) S + Would + V1

When I was kid, I would play football

(-) S + Would not + V1

When I was kid I would not play football

(?) Would + S + V1

Would you play football when i was kid ?

CHAPTER III

A. Would

We can use “would” to talk about repeated past actions.

Every Saturday I would go on a long bike ride

My Mom would always say “ Sit down and shut up”

Often either “would” or “Used to” is possible.Both of these sentence

are possible

Every Saturday , I would go on a long bike ride

Every Saturday , I used to go on a long bike ride

However , only “Used to” it possible when when we talk about

past states.

We used to live in Paris ,When I was a kid (Correct)

We would live in Paris ,When I was a kid (Incorrect)

B. Different between Used to and Would

1. Actually Would not be used to express conditions in the past .

for exemple :

We used to be a close friend in elementary school (Correct)

Cannot be changed to :

We would be a close friend in elementary school (Incorrect)

2. the next difference between used to and would is, when using
would, must be declared clearly first if the time of the incident
indeed in the past. Exemple sentence :

When I was a kid,I would go to my friend’s house every

Sunday.

Because , (When I was a kid)has explained the description the time

beforehand if it happened in the past.

3. Then difference used to and would you need to know as well , the
word “Would” can’t be used with forms of Stative Verbs, ex : Love ,
feel,understand and etc. While the phrase”used to” can be used in the
case.

For exemple :

When i was in home,I used to love playing doll.(Correct)

When i was in home,I would love playing doll.(incorrect)

Note :

Stative verb : verbs that express a state rather than an anction.they

usually relate to thought,emotions,relationships,senses,state of being and
meansurements. These verbs are not usually used with in
progressive(continous) tenses even though they may take on time
expressions such as now and at the moment.
