Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:

Our class has been going over narrative papers and how to tell a story. A narrative can be an
event or sequence of events that describe actions or thoughts/feelings. When writing a narrative
paper it should include: characters, plot, setting, and point of view; but not to get confused with
an opinion. A narrative can either be fiction or non-fiction but for the purpose of this lesson we will
be writing a nonfiction story about our favorite activities. We have been practicing how to map out
our writing to ensure we are including all important details of what makes up a narrative writing
piece.
Students will begin typing their story on Microsoft Word which will then later be posted onto KidPub
which is an online website that allows students to publish their projects. Before we can get to that point, we
must create a mind map of what we will want to include within our paper. Students must brainstorm, draft,
and edit their piece before posting to KidPub. When they post to KidPub, there are opportunities to provide
feedback or get feedback from people via the web. Students will not be using their real names when posting
and will come up with pseudonyms to protect their identities. Students in the class will be required to read
two other classmates writing piece and provide feedback for their peers.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?

Each student would either need to have access to a desktop computer or a laptop to complete this learning
activity. Students will complete their writing piece on Microsoft Word.

Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their school:
Students are able to collaborate with others outside of their classroom and school by reading and
providing feedback to others who have posted their stories onto KidPub.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): Students are given one general topic of their favorite
activity and they can create their own story based on that prompt. This can relate to anything in their
life that they find enjoyable such as playing a sport or going on vacation. Students are to create their
own narrative that include characters, plot, setting, and point of view.

c. Higher-order thinking: Students will be able to publish their stories as well as review their peers writing
and providing feedback. This promotes higher-order thinking because students will include all details in
their writing and give feedback to their peers.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product:
The students will be posting their work onto KidPub which allows anyone around the world
to view their writing piece and provide feedback.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

• The teacher and students will go into great detail about what information must be included into
their narrative writing piece such as characters, plot, setting, and point of view.
• The students are given a general topic (My Favorite Activity) but are then free to choose what
that activity may be.
• The students are using a step-by-step writing process by beginning with brainstorming, creating a
draft, and editing prior to posting to KidPub.
• The teacher will explain what KidPub is and how each of the students can use it to their benefit.
They may gain great feedback to improve their writing skills.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: Internet privacy and safety will be a topic covered
prior to students having access to desktop computers or laptops. The rules will include: using a pseudonym
rather than your real name, no pictures of yourself should be included, no personal information such as
address or phone number should be included, and the school they are from should not be included. These
rules are put into place to protect the identity of each of the students in the classroom and these rules need to
be taken very seriously. These precautions are set into place so students can protect their privacy from anyone
outside of their classroom.

Reflective Practice: This lesson reaches higher LoTi levels compared to some other lessons throughout
my weebly. This lesson provides students with an opportunity to post their work to the world
outside of the classroom walls. Students are able to take their time writing a piece that is
significant to them. They can provide and receive feedback to better others work and their own
work.
