CONCERNING THE BATTERIES

Use the supplied or separately sold AA nickel metal hydride batteries with
your digital camera.

CAUTION
œ Please do not use manganese batteries. Not only is the battery life
extremely short, but there is also a danger of damage to the camera from
the manganese batteries overheating.

About the battery recharger

Be sure to fully charge the supplied nickel metal hydride batteries before
using them in your camera. For charging the batteries, use the supplied
battery charger.
Charge the batteries if they are being used for the first time, and recharge
them whenever the remaining charge is low (see “CHECKING THE
REMAINING BATTERY CHARGE” on page 174).

Recharging nickel metal hydride batteries

œ The supplied battery recharger can be used for the following Sanyo
batteries.
Nickel metal hydride batteries
AA: HR-3U (supplied)
AAA: HR-4U
Ni-Cd batteries
AA: N-3US, N-3U
AAA: N-4U

31 English
SX215/EX, U (VPC-MZ2 GB) Mon. March 25/2002

œ The recharge time for two of the supplied nickel metal hydride AA batteries
placed in the outer sockets is approx. 115 minutes, and approx. 210
minutes for three or four batteries.
œ The two inner sockets of the battery charger accept both AA and AAA
batteries. A maximum of four AA batteries, or two AA and two AAA
batteries, can be recharged at the same time. (You can also recharge two
AAA batteries only.)
œ If the batteries were first discharged before being placed in the battery
charger, the battery recharge indicator may at first flash. If the indicator
changes to a steady light, it indicates that the batteries are being properly
recharged.

English 32
SX215/EX, U (VPC-MZ2 GB) Mon. March 25/2002

CONCERNING THE BATTERIES

About recharging batteries
œ Recharge batteries in the following cases
Newly purchased batteries
Batteries which have not been used for a long time
œ Always recharge two batteries at the same time.
œ During recharging, the battery charger and batteries will be warm. This is
normal and does not indicate a malfunction.
œ It is recommended that the ambient temperature during recharging be
between about 10°C and 40°C. Due to the characteristics of the batteries,
at temperatures below 10°C, it may not be possible to sufficiently recharge
them.
œ If, even with the batteries properly installed, the recharge indicator
continues to flash or the batteries feel hot after a very short period of use,
the batteries may have reached the end of their useful life. If the same
symptoms appear even with new batteries, or if the battery recharge
indicator does not go out even after about 290 minutes of recharging, there
may be another problem. Discontinue recharging the batteries immediately
and consult your dealer.
ABOUT THE BATTERIES
œ You can also use AA Ni-Cd batteries, but they will not last as long as the
AA nickel metal hydride rechargeable batteries. If you do not have access
to these batteries, you may use alkaline batteries; however the duration of
operation provided by alkaline batteries will be very short.
œ A small amount of battery power is still used even when the digital camera
is turned off. It is recommended that you remove the batteries from the
digital camera when it is not being used. However, when the batteries are
removed for a long period, the date and time settings may be cleared.
When reinstalling recharged batteries, recheck the date and time settings
(see page 164).

33 English
SX215/EX, U (VPC-MZ2 GB) Mon. March 25/2002

Cautions concerning the nickel metal hydride

batteries
œ Periodically clean with a dry cloth the terminals of the nickel metal hydride
batteries ((+) and (–)) and the terminals located in the battery compartment
of the digital camera.
Do not touch the battery terminals or the terminals in the battery
compartment of the digital camera with your bare hands. Doing so will allow
contaminants from your hands to adhere to the terminals and oxidize,
increasing the contact resistance. If the contact resistance increases, the
usable life of the batteries will diminish.
œ If you repeatedly remove the nickel metal hydride batteries before they run
out and recharge them, or place them into the digital camera before they
are fully recharged, then a “memory effect”* may occur.
œ Your digital camera is designed to handle the effects from voltage
fluctuations caused by the “memory effect” of nickel metal hydride
batteries. Nevertheless, there are times when the remaining charge
indicator may show èç or êç earlier than usual. If any symptoms such
as these occur, first discharge the batteries completely (see page 172) and
then recharge them until they are fully charged.
* Memory effect
Memory effect is a phenomenon where the battery performance
temporarily decreases. In general, the battery voltage during use drops
below its normal voltage until it is fully discharged and recharged again.

USING THE AUTOFOCUS

The autofocus will work in almost all situations; however, there are certain
conditions that may cause the autofocus function to not work properly. If the
autofocus function is not working properly, use the manual focus mode to
capture images.
B Conditions that may cause incorrect focus
The following examples are some of the situations where the autofocus
function may not work.
œ Subjects with low contrast, very bright
subjects at the center of the image, or
dark subjects or locations
Use the focus-lock function (see page
58) to lock the focus on a subject with
contrast at the same distance as the
desired subject.

œ Subjects without vertical lines

Use the focus-lock function to lock the
focus on the subject while holding the
digital camera vertically.

The following examples are some of the situations where the autofocus
function may work, but not as desired.
œ When both near and far objects are
present
Use the focus-lock function to lock the
focus on a subject at the same distance
as the desired subject.

Hints for taking pictures

Operational sound (beep)
œ The camera can be set so that a beep sound is heard when the shutter
release button, SET button, or MODE button is pressed (see page 167)
Saving battery power
œ When you take pictures without using the LCD monitor, you can slow down
the rate of battery consumption (see page 79).
Immediate viewing of captured images
œ After taking a picture, you can move the main switch to [Ô] to view the
last image captured.
Don’t miss a photo chance
œ In a digital camera, there is a slight delay after the shutter release button is
pressed before the image is actually captured. To counter this delay when
taking sequential shots pictures, follow these steps.
1 With the shutter release button pressed halfway, wait for the exact
moment to take the picture.
œ The camera prepares to capture an image (precapture function).
2 At the moment you want to take the picture, continue to gently press
the shutter release button all the way.
œ Sequential shots shooting begins at the moment the shutter release
button is fully pressed.
Quick exposure correction setting
œ When a Shooting Setting Screen or Shooting Information Screen is not
shown, press [d] or [c] on the arrow button to immediately access the
exposure correction icon and exposure correction bar, and adjust the
setting. (The icon will not appear in cases where the setting cannot be
adjusted.) The exposure correction icon and exposure correction bar are
canceled when the MODE button is pressed (see page 78).

Where is the image and audio data saved?

œ All the image and sound data is recorded on the card installed in the
camera (see page 160).
Taking pictures in backlight conditions...
œ When taking pictures with the light coming from behind the subject, due to
the characteristics of the lens, light lines or patterns (flare phenomenon)
may appear in the captured image. In this situation, it is recommended that
you avoid taking pictures with the subject lit from behind.

NOTE
About sequential shots shooting
œ In sequential shots shooting, the autofocus function is activated when the
shutter release button is pressed and remains fixed at the same focus until
the sequential shots are finished.
If the motion alert icon appears...
œ During still image shooting, if the shutter speed is slow and the possibility
that the image may be blurred due to camera movement becomes high, the
motion alert icon T may appear on the LCD monitor. In this case, use a
tripod to stabilize the camera when shooting, set the exposure control (see
page 99) to Ï, or set the flash operation mode to automatic (see page

English 95
SX215/EX, U (VPC-MZ2 GB) Mon. March 25/2002

HINT
The Ó resolution is achieved by the camera processing the image internally
to generate an approximately 30 million-pixel image.

NOTE
About the resolution and compression settings (see page 97)
œ The image captured by a digital camera consists of a collection of small
dots. The resolution refers to the number of these dots, and the greater the
number, the higher the image quality. As the resolution increases, the size
of the resulting data also increases, and the number of images that can be
captured decreases. To compensate for this, this digital camera is able to
compress the data. This digital camera uses JPEG compression.
If JPEG compression is used, when the image is played back, an extremely
small portion of it is lost. The higher the compression rate, the more of the
original image is lost. Therefore, this digital camera also allows you to store
image data without any compression to ensure that none of the original
image is lost. This is the L mode. Since the image data is large when the
L mode is used, compared to JPEG compression, the digital camera
requires more time both to store the data after the shutter release button is
pressed and to display the image in the playback mode.

QUICK SHOT SETTING (STILL IMAGE

SHOOTING MODE ONLY)
With the initial settings, when the shutter release button is pressed, the digital
camera performs the exposure correction, the white balance settings, the
focussing, and other settings before the image is captured. This results in a
delay after the shutter release button is pressed before the image is actually
captured. By turning on the quick shot setting, these settings are set less
precisely, but the delay after the shutter release button is pressed until the
image is actually captured is drastically reduced.

1 Display the Still Image Shooting Setting Screen (see page 39).

2 Select a quick shot setting from the

release button is pressed, the digital camera performs the normal settings.
If the shutter release button is again pressed within 1 second after the
camera becomes ready for the next shot (the standby indicator lights
green), the quick shot function works to capture the image quickly.
It is possible to take sequential quick shots if it is within one second. If the
shutter release button is pressed after an interval of one second or more
following the previous shot, the digital camera performs the settings as for
normal shooting.

EDITING VIDEO CLIPS

You can cut a video clip at a desired point and save it from the beginning to
that point as a separate video clip, or save from that point to the end as a
separate video clip (“clipping”).
You can also join two video clips together and save them as one separate clip
(“joining”).

NOTE
Caution when editing video clips
œ When editing video clips, do not move the main switch. If you move the
main switch while editing video clips, not only will the editing not be
properly completed, but the original video clip may also be erased.
œ By repeating the clipping and joining procedures, you can create exactly
the video clip you like. Note, however, that as the number or size of the
video clips increases, the card memory may become full, making it
impossible to edit the video clips. (The “MEMORY FULL” message will
appear.) In this case, you will need to free some of the memory on the card
either by deleting data that are no longer necessary [page 157], or by
performing the procedure to erase the original video clip(s) [page 144].

ASSIGNING FILE NAMES

If a reformatted card is used, the file name (image number) of the captured
image automatically begins from 0001. If the card is subsequently
reformatted, or if a different reformatted card is used, the file names again
begin from 0001. This is because the file number reset function is set to ON,
and consequently it results in more than one card containing images with the
same numbers. By setting the file number reset function to OFF, even if the
card is reformatted or the card is replaced with another card, the consecutive
numbering of file names continues from the last number recorded by the
camera.

CHECKING THE REMAINING BATTERY CHARGE

HINT
œ If any data is present, you can also check the remaining battery charge on
the Playback Information Screen.
œ The remaining battery charge indicator will give an accurate indication of
the remaining charge only when the supplied AA nickel metal hydride
batteries are used. The indication will not be accurate if you are using
Ni-Cd batteries.
œ For optimum performance, use only Sanyo nickel metal hydride batteries. If
you are using Ni-Cd batteries, the possible operation time will be much
shorter.
œ Battery life may differ even among batteries of the same type.
œ Depending on the usage of the digital camera (such as the number of times
the flash is used, the use of the LCD monitor, etc.) or the environmental
conditions (temperature, etc.) the number of images that can be saved on a
set of fully charged batteries will vary greatly.

NOTE
œ It is recommended that you prepare extra batteries when taking pictures at
a wedding or while traveling, for example, so you don’t miss capturing
images of important moments due to the battery power running out. The
same is recommended for taking photos in cold environments. (In a ski
area, for example, batteries can be kept warm in your pocket until ready to
use.)

œ Even with cards of the same capacity, the amount of data that can actually be stored
may differ depending on the card brand, etc.

Cautions when using the Microdrive

œ When using the Microdrive continuously, the card will become very hot. Be careful when
touching the card for removal, etc.
œ When using the Microdrive, it will take a few seconds after the digital camera is turned
on before the card can be used. This time will increase when more data is stored on the
card.
œ When erasing a large amount of data with the “GROUP ERASE” command, you may
have to wait a few seconds. (It will take approx. 1 minute to erase 2,000 still images
from the Microdrive.)
œ It will take a great deal of time to download large amounts of data from the Microdrive to
your computer.
œ Microdrive cards require more power than CompactFlash cards. Therefore the possible
battery operation time (see page 200) when using the Microdrive will be much less than
that when using a CompactFlash card.
œ Microdrive cards are easily damaged by vibrations. Be sure to read the cautions
supplied with the Microdrive.
