Scary how this world is becoming. We do wrong things and tell people not judge just to
cover up our sins, and not acknowledge it.
Ladies attracts men by their inappropriate clothes and when a man cheat on them, they
ask God why and say there's no good men out there anymore. Men wants "Perfect body"
that's the fashion for a relationships goals nowadays. When a lady cheat on them, they
be saying the same thing, there's no loyal girls nowadays. Both men and ladies are
guilty! Compare the love before and now. Huge difference, ladies would be wearing
long sleeves, no makeup all over their faces, & yet, they would find their true love and
get married for 68 years.
Nowadays, they will be sleeping together for 10 years and after that they will decide to
get married, & after a year they will divorce. Why? Because their love wasn't based on
God first, chastity, purity, & loyalty. They settled down for less than love. I ask every
gentleman out there and every lady, please don't be driven by your desires. Please fight
back the devil with praying everyday. Beautiful lady, don't let a man look at you like
you're piece of meat. You're daughter of Christ, a warrior, & his unique masterpiece.
Men, don't act sinfully just because your girl isn't wearing properly. Teach her, hug her,
& tell her that her body is a holy temple of God and there's no need to show it to attract
you. Tell her that her soul is beautiful and the older she get, her soul gets younger. Be a
man of God, be a gentleman, & be a true example of how a gentleman should act.
This is how ladies and gentlemen what we can call "Relationships that lasts forever and
relationships goals."

Titus 1:15 All things are clean to those who are clean. But to those who are defiled, and
to unbelievers, nothing is clean; for both their mind and their conscience have been
polluted.

Titus 1:16 They claim that they know God. But, by their own works, they deny him,
since they are abominable, and unbelieving, and reprobate, toward every good work.

 Prayer to St. Andrew the Apostle

from the Liturgical Year, 1901

God grants us to meet thee, O Blessed Andrew, at the threshold of the mystic Season of
Advent, on which we are so soon to enter. When Jesus, our Messias, began his public life, thou
hadst already become the obedient disciple of the Precursor, who preached His coming: thou
wast among the first of them who received the Son of Mary as the Messias foretold in the law
and the prophets. But thou couldst not keep the heavenly secret from him who was so dear to
thee; to Peter, then, thou didst bear the good tidings, and didst lead him to Jesus.

O blessed Apostle! we also are longing for the Messias, the Saviour of our souls; since thou
hast found him, lead us also unto him. We place under thy protection the holy period of
expectation and preparation, which is to bring us to the day of our Saviour's Nativity, that
divine mystery in which He will manifest Himself to the world. Assist us to render ourselves
worthy of seeing Him on that great night. The baptism of penance prepared thee for receiving
the grace of knowing the Word of life; pray for us that we may become truly penitent and may
purify our hearts, during that holy time, and thus be able to behold Him, who has said: Blessed
are the clean of heart, for they shall see God.

Thou hast a special power of leading souls to Jesus, O glorious Saint! for even he, who was to
be made the pastor of the whole flock, was presented to the Messias by thee. By calling thee to
Himself on this day, our Lord has given thee as the patron of Christians who, each year,
seeking again that God in whom thou art now living, pray to thee to show them the way which
leads to Jesus.

Thou teachest us this way; it is that of fidelity, of fidelity even to the Cross. In that way thou
didst courageously walk: and because the Cross leads to Jesus Christ, thou didst passionately
love the Cross. Pray for us, O holy Apostle! that we may begin to understand this love of the
Cross; and that having understood it, we may put it in practice. Thy brother says to us in his
Epistle: Christ having suffered in the flesh, be you also armed with the same thought.
(Continued)
 catholic.restorationThy feast, O blessed Andrew! shows us thee as the living commentary of
this doctrine. Because thy Master was crucified, thou wouldst also be crucified. From the high
throne to which thou hast been raised by the Cross, pray for us, that the Cross may be unto us
the expiation of the sins which are upon us, the quenching of the passions which burn within us,
and the means of uniting us by love to Him, who, through love alone for us, was nailed to the
Cross.

 Christmas Novena of St. Andrew

Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born of the most pure
Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in piercing cold. In that hour, vouchsafe, O my God!
to hear my prayer and grant my desires, through the merits of Our Saviour Jesus Christ, and of
His Blessed Mother. Amen. (It is piously believed that whoever recites the above prayer fifteen
times a day from the feast of St. Andrew (30th November) until Christmas will obtain what is
asked.) Imprimatur

 St. Radbod

Bishop of Utrecht and Confessor

(850 – 917)

THIS holy prelate was, by his father, of noble French extraction; and, by his mother, Radbod,
the last king or prince of the Frisons was his great grandfather, whose name was given him by
his mother. The first tincture of learning and piety he received under the tuition of Gunther,
bishop of Cologn, his uncle by the mother: his education was completed in the courts of the
emperors Charles the Bald, and his son Lewis the Stammerer, to which he repaired not to aspire
after honours, but to perfect himself in the sciences, which were taught there by the ablest
masters. The hymns and office of St. Martin, an eclogue on St. Lebwin, a hymn on St.
Swidbert, and some other pious poems which are extant, are monuments of his piety and
application to polite literature, as it was then cultivated: but the sacred duties principally
employed him. In a short chronicle which he compiled, he says upon the year 900; “I Radbod, a
sinner, have been assumed, though unworthy, into the company of the ministers of the church
of Utrecht; with whom I pray that I may attain to eternal life.” Before the end of that year he
was unanimously chosen bishop of that church; but opposed his election, understanding how
much more difficult and dangerous it is to command than to obey. The obstacles which his
humility and apprehensions raised, being at length removed, he put on the monastic habit, his
most holy predecessors having been monks, because the church of Utrecht had been founded by
priests of the monastic Order. After he had received the episcopal consecration, he never tasted
any flesh meat, often fasted two or three days together, and allowed himself only the coarsest
and most insipid fare. His charity to the poor was excessive. By a persecution raised by
obstinate sinners he was obliged to leave Utrecht; and died happily at Daventer, on the 29th of
November in 918. See his life written by one in the same century in Mabillon, sæc. 5. Ben. et
Annal. Ben. t. 3. l. 40. § 26. Usuard, Molanus, Miræus, Becka, &c.

 Saint Saturninus

Bishop and Martyr

(†ca. 70 A.D.) Saint Saturninus was a contemporary and a disciple of Our Lord Jesus Christ; he
came to Palestine from Greece, attracted by the reputation of Saint John the Baptist, which had
echoed even to the northern Mediterranean region. He then followed our Saviour, heard His
teaching, and was a witness to many of His miracles. He was present in the Cenacle when the
Holy Spirit descended at Pentecost upon the Mother of Christ, the Apostles and Disciples
assembled in the number of 120. (Acts of the Apostles 1:15) He departed to teach Christianity
under Saint Peter's authority, evangelizing the lands east of Palestine, and going as far as the
region of the Persians and Medes and their neighboring provinces. He cured the sick, the lepers,
and the paralytics and delivered souls from the demons; and before he left, he gave written
instructions to the new Christians concerning what they should believe and practice.

When Saint Saturninus went with Saint Peter to Rome, the Apostle was inspired to send out a
number of fervent evangelists to the West, to dissipate by the light of Christ the darkness in
which those regions were still plunged. Saturninus was directed to go to what is now southern
France, to Toulouse in particular. Saint Peter consecrated him a bishop, that he might form and
ordain native priests for the future Christian churches of Gaul. He was given for his companion
Papulus, later to become Saint Papulus the Martyr.

The two companions acquired at Nimes an ardent assistant in the person of Honestus. At
Carcassonne, when the three announced Christ they were thrown into a prison, where they
suffered from hunger; but an Angel was sent by the Lord to deliver them, and they continued
on their way to Toulouse, preaching the doctrine and the name of Christ publicly. At this large
and opulent city, where idolatry was entrenched, the idols became mute when the missionaries
arrived. This caused great astonishment, and the cause of the silence was sought. (Continued)
 catholic.restorationSaint Saturninus in the meantime was working miracles which produced a
strong impression on the witnesses; among them, the cure of a woman with advanced leprosy.
The sign of the cross which he made over crowds often cured many sick persons at the same
time, and he then baptized those who showed themselves ready for the sacrament. For a time he
left his two disciples there and continued on elsewhere, preaching in the cities of what are now
Auch and Eauze. A Spaniard heard of him and crossed the Pyrenees to hear him; this man, by
the name of Paternus, advanced so rapidly on the paths of virtue that Saint Saturninus ordained
him and then established him bishop of Eauze. He himself returned to Toulouse and sent
Honestus to Spain to preach. When the latter returned to ask him to come with him to Spain, he
left his disciple Papulus in charge for a time at Toulouse.

At Pampeluna his preaching brought thousands to the truth, delivering these former idolaters
from the heavy yoke of the ancient enemy. While he continued his apostolic labors elsewhere,
in Toulouse a persecution broke out against Papulus, and the faithful Christian obtained the
crown of martyrdom by a violent death. At once Saint Saturnin returned to Toulouse, when he
learned of it.

The idols again became mute. One day a great multitude was gathered near a pagan altar, where
a bull stood ready for the sacrifice. A man in the crowd pointed out Saturninus, who was
passing by, as the cause of the silence. There is the one who preaches everywhere that our
temples must be torn down, and who dares to call our gods devils! It is his presence that
imposes silence on our oracles! He was chained and dragged to the summit of the capitol,
situated on a high hill, and commanded to offer sacrifice to the idols and cease to preach Jesus
Christ. An Angel appeared to him to fortify him, and the terrible flagellation he endured could
not alter his firmness. I know only one God, the only true one; to Him alone I will offer
sacrifice on the altar of my heart... How can I fear gods who you yourselves say are afraid of
me? (Continued)
 catholic.restorationHe was tied by a rope to the bull, which was driven down the stairs leading
to the capitol. His skull was broken, and the Saint entered into the beatitude of the unceasing
vision of God. His body was taken up and buried by two devout young women. Tradition
conserved the memory of the place of his burial, where later a church was built.

Reflection: When beset by the temptations of the devil, let us call upon the Saints, who reign
with Christ. They were powerful during their lives against the devil and his angels. They are
more powerful now that they have passed from the Church on earth to the Church triumphant.

 St. Virgil of Ireland

Bishop of Saltzburg and Confessor

(c. 700 - 784)
ST. VIRGIL was born in Ireland, and distinguished at home for his learning and virtue.
Travelling into France in the reign of King Pepin, he was courteously received by that prince,
who kept him two years near his person, till the see of Juvave, since called Saltzburg, falling
vacant, he recommended him to that bishopric, and wrote in his favour to Odilo, Duke of
Bavaria, his friend and brother-in-law. Virgil trembled at the prospect, and, for two years,
commissioned Dobda, a bishop whom he had brought with him from Ireland, to perform the
Episcopal functions, reserving to himself only the office of preaching and instructing, till he
was compelled by his colleagues to receive the episcopal consecration in 766. He rebuilt
magnificently the abbey of St. Peter at Saltzburg, of which he had been himself for some time
abbot, and he translated thither the body of St. Rupert founder of that see. This church became
afterwards the cathedral. St. Virgil baptized at Saltsburg two successive dukes of Carinthia,
Chetmar, and Vetune, and sent thither fourteen preachers under the conduct of Modestus, a
bishop who planted the faith in that country. Having settled the affairs of his own church, he
made a visitation of that of Carinthia, as far as the borders of the Huns, where the Drave falls
into the Danube. Soon after his return home he was taken ill of a slow fever, and, after a fervent
preparation, cheerfully departed to our Lord on the 27th of November, 784. Among the many
saints who governed the see of Saltzburg, whose lives Canisius has collected, there is none to
whom that church and its temporal principality are more indebted than to St. Virgil. See his life
in Canisius, Lect. Ant. and in Mabillon, Act. Ben. t. 4. p. 310. Also Ware’s Writers of Ireland;

 Saint James of The March of Ancona

Franciscan Priest
(1391-1476)

The small town of Montebrandone, on the eastern coast of Italy, called the March of Ancona,
gave birth to this Saint in the year 1391. While still young he was sent to the University of
Perugia, where his progress in learning soon qualified him to be chosen preceptor to the
children of a young gentleman of Perugia. He went with him to Florence, to aid in the
administration of a juridical office the nobleman had obtained there; but realizing that he was
about to be engulfed in the whirlpool of worldly excesses in which he found himself, Saint
James applied himself to prayer and recollection, and thought of entering the Carthusian Order.

When traveling one day near Assisi, however, he went into the Church of the Portiuncula to
pray, and moved by the fervor of the holy men who there served God and by the example of
their blessed founder Saint Francis, he determined to petition in that very place for the habit of
the Order. He was then twenty-one years of age; he received the habit near Assisi, at the
convent of Our Lady of the Angels. He began his spiritual war against the world, the flesh and
the devil in prayer and silence in his cell, joining extraordinary fasts and vigils to his assiduous
prayer. He fell ill with a number of different illnesses which for thirty years he endured with
heroic patience, without ever exempting himself from saying Holy Mass or assisting at the
offices in common. For forty years he never passed a day without taking the discipline.

When, through the response of the Mother of Heaven to his prayers, he became able to preach,
he carried out that ministry with such great fervor and power that he never failed to touch the
most hardened hearts and produce truly miraculous conversions. He joined Saint John of
Capistrano to preach a crusade against the Turks, who had become masters of Constantinople
and were terrorizing Western Europe. At Buda he effected the miraculous cessation of a furious
sedition by simply showing the crucifix to the people; the rebels themselves took him upon
their shoulders and carried him through the streets of the city. (Continued)
 catholic.restorationAt Prague he brought back to God many who had fallen into error, and when
a magician wanted to dispute with him, he rendered him mute and thus obliged him to retire in
confusion. He traveled through the northern Provinces, into Germany, Dalmatia, Hungary,
Poland, Norway and Denmark and many other places; he went without any provisions other
than his confidence in God. If he found no aid or was without lodging he rejoiced in his union
with Lady Poverty, to whom he was joined by his religious profession.

When he was called back to Italy to labor against a heresy, he acquired new persecutors who
attempted in several ways, including ambushes, poison, calumny and the arousing of seditions
against him, to do away with him. But God delivered him each time from the most adroitly
conceived artifices. When chosen as Archbishop of Milan, he fled, and could not be prevailed
on to accept the office. He brought about several miracles at Venice and at other places, often
by the simple Holy Name of Jesus written on a paper. He raised from dangerous illness the
Duke of Calabria and the King of Naples. The Saint died in the Franciscan convent of the Holy
Trinity near Naples, to which city the Holy Father had sent him at the prayer of its King,
Ferdinand. The date was the 28th of November of the year 1476; he was ninety years old, and
had spent seventy of those years in religion.

 Saint Catherine Labouré

Virgin, Visionary
(1806-1876)
Saint Catherine Zoé Labouré was born in a small village of France in 1806, the daughter of a
well-to-do farmer who had at one time wanted to become a priest, and his very Christian wife.
Catherine, the ninth of the eleven living children, lost her mother when she was only nine years
old and had to abandon school to go to live with an aunt, accompanied by her younger sister.
Two years later she was recalled to take charge of the household, because the older children
had all left, one to become a Sister of Saint Vincent de Paul, the others to marry or seek a living
elsewhere.

She made a vow of virginity when still very young, desiring to imitate the Holy Virgin, to
whom she had confided herself when her mother died. She longed to see Her, and she prayed,
in her simplicity, for that grace. She spent as many hours as possible in the Chapel of the Virgin
in the village church, without, however, neglecting the work of the household. She talked to
Our Lady as to a veritable mother, and indeed the Mother of Christ and ours would prove
Herself to be such. Catherine wished to become a nun, without having opted for any particular
community; but one day she saw a venerable priest in a dream, saying Mass in her little village
church. He turned to her afterwards and made a sign for her to come forward, but in her dream
she retreated, walking backwards, unable to take her gaze from his face. He said to her: Now
you flee me, but later you will be happy to come to me; God has plans for you. The dream was
realized and, as a postulant in the Community of Saint Vincent de Paul, she assisted at the
translation of his relics to a nearby church of Paris. She had indeed recognized his picture one
day in one of the convents of the Sisters of Charity, and obtained her father's consent to enter
that Congregation when her younger sister was old enough to replace her at home.

Catherine's interior life was alimented by the visions she frequently had of Jesus in the Blessed
Sacrament, where once she saw Him as Christ the King. (Continued)
 catholic.restorationAnd the designs of God for this humble novice began to be fulfilled, after
Our Lady appeared to her in July of 1830, and confided to her the mission of having a Medal
struck according to the living picture she saw one night, when a little Angel led her to the
convent Chapel, and there she knelt at the Virgin's feet to hear the words which would be the
motivating force of her forty-six years of religious life.

Once more — insofar as we know — she would see the Blessed Mother, on November 27th of
the same year, when one afternoon while at prayer with her Sisters, she beheld Her to one side
of the chapel, Her feet poised on a globe, on which was prostrate a greenish serpent; the hands
of the Virgin were holding a golden globe at the level of the heart, as though offering it to God,
said Catherine later, in an attitude of supplication, Her eyes sometimes raised to heaven,
sometimes looking down at the earth, and Her lips murmuring a prayer for the entire world.
The face of the Virgin was of incomparable, indescribable beauty, with a pleading expression
which plunged the Sister into ravishment, while she listened to Her prayers. The Immaculate
Virgin, after having offered to God Her Compassion with the suffering Christ, prayed for all
men and for each one in particular; she prayed for this poor world, that God might take pity on
its ignorance, its weakness and faults, and that by pardoning He would hold back the arm of
Divine Justice, raised to strike. She prayed the Lord to give peace to the universe.

For many years Catherine kept her secrets from all save her confessor, Father Aladel, priest of
the Mission of Saint Vincent, who, wanting to be able to continue with his penitent, saw to it
that she was not sent far from Paris, after he had fulfilled the first mission of having the Medal
struck. He died, however, before having the statue made according to this second vision, as Our
Lady desired. (Continued)
 catholic.restorationCatherine suffered much from her inability to accomplish the second part of
her mission. When she finally confided this second desire of Our Lady to her Sister Superior, a
statue of Our Lady, Queen of the World and Mediatrix of all Graces, was made for two Chapels
of the nuns.

Saint Catherine died in 1876, after spending her life in the domestic and agricultural duties
associated with the kitchen and garden, and in general caring for the elderly of the Hospice of
Enghien at Reuilly, only about three miles southeast of Paris. Among her writings recounting
the apparitions, we read: Oh, how beautiful it will be to hear it said: Mary is Queen of the
universe. That will be a time of peace, joy and happiness which will be long... She will be
borne like a banner and will make a tour of the world. The Virgin foretold that this time would
come only after the entire world will be in sadness... Afterwards, peace.

 St. Sylvester Gozzolini

Abbot of Osimo
(1177 - 1267) [Institutor of the Sylvestrin Monks.] THIS saint was born of a noble family at
Osimo or Osmo, about fourteen miles from Loretto in 1177. He studied the laws and theology
at Bologna and Padua, and being instituted to a canonry at Osimo made prayer, pious reading,
and the instruction of others his whole employment. His zeal in reproving vice raised him
enemies, and his bishop, whom he admonished of certain neglects to the discharge of his office,
declared himself his persecutor. These trials served to purify the heart of the servant of God,
and prepared him for the grace of the pure love of God. The sight of the carcass of a man who
had been admired in his life-time for his beauty and great accomplishments, completed his
abhorrence and contempt of this treacherous world, so that, deploring its scandals and
blindness, he left the city privately, and retired into a desert thirty miles from Osimo, being then
forty years old. To satisfy the importunity of others, in 1231, he built a monastery upon Monte
Fano, two miles from Fabriano, in the marquisate of Ancona. In this house he settled the rule of
St. Bennet without any mitigation: and, in 1248, obtained of Innocent IV., who was then at
Lyons, the confirmation of his institute. He lived to found twenty-five monasteries in Italy, and
leaving his disciples heirs of his double spirit of penance and prayer, departed to the Lord on
the 26th of November in 1267, being ninety years old. God was pleased to work several
miracles at his tomb, and his name is inserted in the Roman Martyrology.

 THE CATHOLIC POSITION

Catholicism, in contrast to all of this, says that religious authority comes from above, that the
Church was founded by God and is divinely assisted in its essential functions, and that all
people owe to it their adherence and obedience. It teaches that the family is divinely
constituted, that the father is the head of the house, and the wife and children must obey him. It
teaches that the family, and not the individual, is the building-block of society and that its
sacred rights must be protected by the State. It teaches that the State must profess the one, true
religion, and although it is a society distinct from the Church, it must nevertheless cooperate
with the Church in a union of Church and State. It teaches that all authority, even political
authority, comes from God and that a mob of individuals can never be the possessor of political
authority. It teaches that human beings are bound in conscience to obey the authority of the
State, which comes from God. Indeed the State, no matter what its form of government,
emerges as something quite limited in the Catholic system, bound as it is to respect the true
freedoms of individuals to see to their own needs on the most local level. In other words,
Washington D.C. should not be legislating about what schools should be like in Alaska. This
Catholic principle, of keeping government as small and as local as possible, is called
subsidiarity.

In a State established upon Catholic principles, therefore, the legislator or courts, as the case
may be, would need to cite only the teaching of the Catholic Church concerning the moral law.
In the perverted modern political systems, based on protestant liberalism, there can be an appeal
only to liberalism, with the effect that immorality always wins the day. In such a system, the
“conservatives” are merely liberals who have not changed yet, who have not become consistent
yet with their own liberal principles.

For this reason, in the United States, we have witnessed over the past decades a shrinking of the
number of “red” states, that is, those of a more conservative bent. (Continued)
 catholic.restorationHowever gloomy my prediction may sound, I really see no hope for a
political victory of conservatives in the future. The more that liberals play their liberalism card,
the more the conservatives are obliged to submit to the logic. Add to this the fact that the older
generation, which may have cultural and religious objections to immorality, is dying off, and
that the persons who are in charge now are the teenagers of the 1960’s, thoroughly imbued with
godless liberalism.

We understand well why the Church was always severe in repressing heresy. Not only is heresy
a most grave offense against the divine majesty, but is also a fountainhead of the most terrible
social, political, and moral evils. All immorality, all social problems, and all political errors
start with bad ideas. We have abortion because of bad ideas floating in the heads of
people. These bad ideas are prevented and banished from people’s minds by adherence to the
one, true Faith, that is, to the Catholic Church, the “pillar and ground of truth,” as St.Paul
describes it.

 The First Warning of Advent: Christ is nigh!

Let us give up Sin, and practise Virtue
Rom. xiii. 12: The night is passed, and the day is at hand: "Let us therefore cast off the works of
darkness, and put on the armour of light." Startled at the solemn warning,
Let the earth-bound soul arise;
Christ her Sun, all sloth dispelling,
Shines upon the morning skies. "Christ is nigh," it seems to say; "Cast away the dreams of
darkness,
O ye children of the day!" So when next He comes with glory,
Wrapping all the earth in fear,
May He then, as our Defender,
On the clouds of heaven appear. "Christ is nigh," it seems to say; "Cast away the dreams of
darkness,
O ye children of the day!" Lo, the Lamb so long expected,
Comes with pardon down from heaven;
Let us haste with tears of sorrow,
One and all to be forgiven. "Christ is nigh," it seems to say; "Cast away the dreams of
darkness,
O ye children of the day!" Honour, glory, virtue, merit,
To the Father and the Son,
With the Everlasting Spirit,
While Eternal ages run. "Christ is nigh," it seems to say; "Cast away the dreams of darkness,
O ye children of the day!"

 The History of Advent

The name Advent [From the Latin word Adventus, which signifies a coming] is applied, in the
Latin Church, to that period of the year, during which the Church requires the faithful to
prepare for the celebration of the feast of Christmas, the anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ.
The mystery of that great day had every right to the honour of being prepared for by prayer and
works of penance; and, in fact, it is impossible to state, with any certainty, when this season of
preparation (which had long been observed before receiving its present name of Advent) was
first instituted. It would seem, however, that its observance first began in the west, since it is
evident that Advent could not have been looked on as a preparation for the feast of Christmas,
until that feast was definitively fixed to the twenty-fifth of December; which was done in the
east only towards the close of the fourth century; whereas it is certain that the Church of Rome
kept the feast on that day at a much earlier period.

We must look upon Advent in two different lights: first, as a time of preparation, properly so
called, for the birth of our Saviour, by works of penance; and secondly, as a series of
ecclesiastical Offices drawn up for the same purpose. We find, as far back as the fifth century,
the custom of giving exhortations to the people in order to prepare them for the feast of
Christmas. We have two sermons of Saint Maximus of Turin on this subject, not to speak of
several others which were formerly attributed to St. Ambrose and St. Augustine, but which
were probably written by St. Cesarius of Aries. If these documents do not tell us what was the
duration and what the exercises of this holy season, they at least show us how ancient was the
practice of distinguishing the time of Advent by special sermons. Saint Ivo of Chartres, St.
Bernard, and several other doctors of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, have left us set
sermons de Adventu Domini, quite distinct from their Sunday homilies on the Gospels of that
season. (Continued)
 catholic.restorationIn the capitularia of Charles the Bald, in 846, the bishops admonish that
prince not to call them away from their Churches during Lent or Advent, under pretext of
affairs of the State or the necessities of war, seeing that they have special duties to fulfil, and
particularly that of preaching during those sacred times.

The oldest document in which we find the length and exercises of Advent mentioned with
anything like clearness, is a passage in the second book of the History of the Franks by St.
Gregory of Tours, where he says that St. Perpetuus, one of his predecessors, who held that see
about the year 480, had decreed a fast three times a week, from the feast of St. Martin until
Christmas. It would be impossible to decide whether St. Perpetuus, by his regulations,
established a new custom, or merely enforced an already existing law. Let us, however, note
this interval of forty, or rather of forty-three days, so expressly mentioned, and consecrated to
penance, as though it were a second Lent, though less strict and severe than that which precedes
Easter.

Later on, we find the ninth canon of the first Council of Mâcon, held in 582, ordaining that
during the same interval between St. Martin’s day and Christmas, the Mondays, Wednesdays,
and Fridays, should be fasting days, and that the Sacrifice should be celebrated according to the
lenten rite. Not many years before that, namely in 567, the second Council of Tours had
enjoined the monks to fast from the beginning of December till Christmas. This practice of
penance soon extended to the whole forty days, even for the laity: and it was commonly called
St. Martin’s Lent. The capitularia of Charlemagne, in the sixth book, leave us no doubt on the
matter; and Rabanus Maurus, in the second book of his Institution of clerics, bears testimony to
this observance. There were even special rejoicings made on St. Martin’s feast, just as we see
them practised now at the approach of Lent and Easter.
(Continued)
 catholic.restorationThe obligation of observing this Lent, which, though introduced so
imperceptibly, had by degrees acquired the force of a sacred law, began to be relaxed, and the
forty days from St. Martin’s day to Christmas were reduced to four weeks. We have seen that
this fast began to be observed first in France; but thence it spread into England. as we find from
Venerable Bede’s history; into Italy, as appears from a diploma of Astolphus, king of the
Lombards, dated 753; into Germany, Spain, &c., of which the proofs may be seen in the
learned work of Dom Martène, On the ancient rites of the Church. The first allusion to
Advent’s being reduced to four weeks is to be found in the ninth century, in a letter of Pope St.
Nicholas I to the Bulgarians. The testimony of Ratherius of Verona, and of Abbo of Fleury,
both writers of the tenth century, goes also to prove that, even then, the question of reducing the
duration of the Advent fast by one-third was seriously entertained. It is true that St. Peter
Damian, in the eleventh century, speaks of the Advent fast as still being for forty days; and that
St. Louis, two centuries later, kept it for that length of time; but as far as this holy king is
concerned, it is probable that it was only his own devotion which prompted him to this practice.

The discipline of the Churches of the west, after having reduced the time of the Advent fast, so
far relented, in a few years, as to change the fast into a simple abstinence; and we even find
Councils of the twelfth century, for instance Selingstadt in 1122, and Avranches in 1172, which
seem to require only the clergy to observe this abstinence. The Council of Salisbury, held in
1281, would seem to expect none but monks to keep it. (Continued)
 catholic.restorationOn the other hand (for the whole subject is very confused, owing, no doubt,
to there never having been any uniformity of discipline regarding it in the western Church), we
find Pope Innocent III, in his letter to the bishop of Braga, mentioning the custom of fasting
during the whole of Advent, as being at that time observed in Rome; and Durandus, in the same
thirteenth century, in his Rational on the Divine Offices, tells us that, in France, fasting was
uninterruptedly observed during the whole of that holy time.

 Instruction for the First Sunday of Advent

The Church's Year

by Rev. Fr. Leonard Goffine's

The first Sunday in Advent is the first day of the Church Year, and the beginning of the holy
season of Advent. The Church commences on this day to contemplate the coming of the
Redeemer, and with the

prophets to long for Him; during the entire season of Advent she unites her prayers with their
sighs, in order to awaken in her children also the desire for the grace of the Redeemer; above all
to move them to true penance for their sins, because these are the greatest obstacles in the path
of that gracious Advent; therefore she prays at the Introit of the day's Mass:

INTROIT To Thee, O Lord, have I lifted up my soul: in Thee, O my God, I put my trust; let me
not be ashamed: neither let my enemies laugh at me: for none of them that wait on Thee shall
be confounded. Show me, O Lord, Thy ways, and teach me Thy paths (Ps. 24). Glory be to the
Father.

COLLECT Raise up, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy power, and come; that by Thy protection
we may deserve to be rescued from the threatening dangers of our sins, and to be saved by Thy
deliverance. Through our Lord.

EPISTLE (Rom. 13:11-14). Brethren, knowing the time, that it is now the hour for us to rise
from sleep: for now our salvation is nearer than when we believed. The night is past, and the
day is at hand. Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light. Let
us walk honestly, as in the day: not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and
impurities, not in contention and strife; but put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ.

What does St. Paul teach us in this epistle?

After fully explaining the duties of a Christian life to the Romans who were converted mainly
by St. Peter, he exhorts them to hesitate no longer to fulfil these duties, and he seeks to move
their hearts by this time of grace, presented them by the Christian dispensation, and by the
shortness of the time of grace.
(Continued)
 catholic.restorationWhat is here meant by sleep?

The stupidity and blindness of the soul that, forgetting her God, is sunk in a lukewarm,
effeminate, slothful and lustful life, which, when it is gone, leaves nothing more than a dream.

Why does St. Paul say, "salvation is nearer"? He wishes to impress upon the Romans that they
now have far greater hope of salvation than when they first became Christians, and that they
should secure it by a pious life, because death, and the moment on which depended their
salvation, or eternal reward, was drawing near. "What is our life," says St. Chrysostom, "other
than a course, a dangerous course to death, through death to immortality?" What is the
signification of day and night?

The night signifies the time before Christ, a night of darkness, of infidelity and of injustice; the
day represents the present time, in which by the gospel Christ enlightens the whole world with
the teachings of the true faith.

What are "the works of darkness"? All sins, and especially those which are committed in the
dark, to shun the eye of God and man.

What is the "armor of light"? That faith, virtue and grace, the spiritual armor, with which we
battle against our three enemies, the world, the flesh, and the devil, and in which armor we
should walk honestly before all men. A Christian who in baptism has renounced the devil and
all his pomps, must not live in vice, but must put on Christ Jesus, that is, must by the imitation
of Christ's virtues adorn his soul, as it were, with a beautiful garment. This text (verse 13)
moved St. Augustine to fly from all works of uncleanness in which he had been involved, and
to lead a pure life which he had before thought difficult.

ASPIRATION Grant, O Lord, that we may rise by penance from the sleep of our sins, may
walk in the light of Thy grace by the performance of good works, may put on Thee and adorn
our souls with the imitation of Thy virtues. Amen. (Continued)
 catholic.restorationGOSPEL (Lk. 21:25-33). At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: There
shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars: and upon the earth distress of
nations, by reason of the confusion of the roaring of the sea and of the waves, men withering
away for fear and expectation of what shall come upon the whole world. For the powers of
heaven shall be moved; and then they shall see the Son of man coming in a cloud with great
power and majesty. But when these things begin to come to pass, look up and lift up your
heads, because your redemption is at hand. And he spoke to them a similitude: See the fig tree,
and all the trees; when they now shoot forth their fruit, you know that summer is nigh. So you
also, when you shall see these things come to pass, know that the kingdom of God is at hand.
Amen I say to you, this generation shall not pass away till all things be fulfilled. Heaven and
earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
Why does the Church cause the gospel of the Last Judgment to be read on this day?

To move us to penance, and to induce us to prepare our souls for the coming of Christ, by
placing the Last Judgment before our minds. Should not the thought of this terrible judgment,
when all good and all evil will be revealed, and accordingly be rewarded or punished in the
presence of the whole world-should not this thought strengthen us in virtue!

What signs will precede the Last Judgment?

The sun will be obscured, the stars will lose their light and disappear in the firmament (Is.
13:10), lightning and flames will surround the earth, and wither up every thing; the powers of
heaven will be moved, the elements brought to confusion; the roaring of the sea with the
howling of the winds and the beating of the storms will fill man with terror and dread. Such evil
and distress will come upon the world, that man will wither away for fear, not knowing whither
to turn. Then will appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven, the holy cross, the terror of the
sinners who have scorned it, the consolation of the just who have loved it (Mt. 24:30).
(Continued)
 catholic.restorationWhy will all this come to pass?

Because as the people love the creatures of God so inordinately, more than the Creator, and use
them only to His dishonor, He will destroy them in this terrible manner, arming all creatures for
vengeance against His enemies (Wis. 5:8-24, and showing by the manner of their destruction
the evils which will fall upon all sinners. The darkness of the sun will indicate the darkness of
hell; the blood-red moon, the anger and wrath of God; the disappearance and falling of the
stars, will represent the fall of sinners into the abyss of hell and their disappearance from earth;
and the madness of the elements, will exhibit the rage of the beasts of hell. Sinners will then
vainly, and too late, repent that they have attached their hearts to things which will end so
horribly, and that only increase their torments.

Why does Christ nevertheless command: "Lift up your heads, for your redemption is at hand"?
These words are spoken to the just who as long as they live on earth are like prisoners and
exiles, but who at the Last Judgment will be taken body and soul into their long desired
fatherland, the kingdom of heaven: into the freedom of the children of God. These will have
reason to raise their heads, now bowed in mourning, and to rejoice.

How will the Last Judgment commence?

By the command of God the angels will sound the trumpets, summoning all men from the four
parts of the earth to come to judgment (I Thess. 4:15). Then the bodies of the dead will unite
with their souls, and be brought to the valley of Josaphat, and there placed, the just on the right,
the wicked on the left (Mt. 25:33). Then the devils as well as the angels will appear; Christ
Himself will be seen coming in a cloud, in such power and majesty that the sinners will be
filled with terror. They will not dare to look at Him, and will cry to the mountains to fall upon
them, and to the hills to cover them (Lk. 23:30). (Continued)
 catholic.restorationHow will the judgment be held?

The book of conscience, upon which all men are to be judged, and which closed with this life,
will be opened. All good and evil thoughts, words, deeds and motives, even the most secret,
known only to God, will then be as plainly revealed to the whole world as if they were written
on each one's forehead; by these each one will be judged, and be eternally rewarded, or
eternally punished.

O God! If we must then give an account of every idle word (Mt. 12:36), how can we stand in
the face of so many sinful words and actions!

Why will God hold a universal public Judgment?

Although immediately after death, a special private judgment of each soul takes place, God has
ordained a public and universal judgment for the following reasons: First, that it may be clearly
shown to all how just has been His private judgment, and also that the body which has been the
instrument of sin or of virtue may share in the soul's punishment or reward; secondly, that the
justice which they could by no means obtain in this life, may be rendered before the whole
world to the oppressed poor, and to persecuted innocence, and that the wicked who have abused
the righteous, and yet have been considered honest and good, may be put to shame before all;
thirdly, that the graces and means of salvation bestowed upon each, may be made known;
fourthly, that the blessed providence of God which often permitted the righteous to suffer evil
while the wicked prospered, may be vindicated, and it be shown on that day that His acts are
acts of the greatest wisdom; fifthly, that the wicked may learn the goodness of God, not for
their comfort or benefit, but for their greater sorrow, that they may see how He rewards even
the slightest work performed for His love and honor; finally, that Christ may be exalted before
the wicked on earth as before the good in heaven, and that the truth of His words may solemnly
be made manifest.
(Continued)
 catholic.restorationASPIRATION Just art Thou O God, and just are Thy judgments. Ah,
penetrate my soul with holy fear of them, that I may be kept always in awe, and avoid sin.
Would that I could say with the penitent St. Jerome: "Whether I eat or drink, or whatever I do, I
seem to hear the awful sound of the trumpet in my ears: `Arise ye dead, and come to
judgment."'

 The Miraculous Medal (1830)

The Miraculous Medal comes directly from the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God and
our Mother; it is a gift from heaven which has never ceased to effect marvels of grace
throughout the entire world. This medal is a very simple and very efficacious means to benefit
from the protection of Mary in all our necessities, both spiritual and temporal.

On November 27, 1830, in a residence of the Daughters of Charity, at the Chapel of the Rue du
Bac in Paris, the Most Blessed Virgin appeared to Saint Catherine Labouré (1806-1876) for the
second time. On this day the Queen of Heaven was seen with a globe under Her feet and
holding in Her hands, at the level of the heart, another smaller globe, which She seemed to be
offering to Our Lord in a gesture of supplication. Suddenly, Her fingers were covered with
rings and beautiful jewels; the rays from these streamed in all directions... The Blessed Virgin
looked down on the humble novice who was contemplating Her. Behold, She said, the symbol
of the graces that I bestow on those who ask Me for them. The jewels which remain in the
shadows symbolize the graces that one forgets to ask Me for, the Virgin continued. And
Catherine Labouré wrote later, She made me understand how generous She is towards persons
who pray to Her, how many graces She grants those who ask Her for them, and what joy She
has to bestow them! Then there formed around the Mother of God an oval background on
which was written in gold letters:

O Mary, conceived without sin,

pray for us who have recourse to Thee.

In a gesture which invited recourse and confidence, the hands of Mary descended and were
extended as we see them represented on the medal.

Sister Catherine Labouré beheld this vision with happiness. A voice said to her: Have a medal
struck on this model; the persons who will wear it will receive great graces, especially if they
wear it around the neck. These graces will be abundant for those who wear it with confidence.
(Continued)
 catholic.restorationThe picture seemed to turn around, and Sister Catherine saw, on its reverse
side, the letter M surmounted by a little cross, and below it the holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary,
the first surrounded by a crown of thorns, and the second transfixed by a sword. Twelve stars
surrounded the monogram of Mary and the two holy Hearts.

Sister Catherine faithfully accomplished the mission Heaven had entrusted to her. In 1832 the
medal was struck and immediately underwent a extraordinary diffusion throughout the world,
accompanied by unceasing prodigies of cures, protection and conversion. Thus it came to be
known as the Miraculous Medal. Let us wear this medal of the Most Blessed Virgin with
respect, and often repeat with confidence and love, the invocation by which Our Heavenly
Mother desires that we implore favors: O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have
recourse to Thee.

 The Liturgical Year

Let the Catholic who reads this work be on his guard against that coldness of faith and that
want of love which has well-nigh turned into an object of indifference that admirable cycle of
the Church, which heretofore was, and always ought to be, the joy of the people, the source of
light to the learned, and the book of the humblest of the faithful. - Dom Gueranger, O.S.B.

One of the chief ways that the Church teaches and reteaches the deposit of Faith is through its
liturgical cycle.

The calendar of the Church, which takes its point of departure from the natural seasons, the Old
Law and the New, stretches out over a twelve-month period the divine things that are present in
a condensed format every single Mass.

This distension of the mysteries over the course of a year allows the faithful to appropriate,
gradually and solemnly, the deeper meaning of their faith. Just as the observant eye learns how
to read the inner workings of nature from the changing signs of the season, so too does the
pious eye learn the essence of supernature from the rhythms of the liturgical calendar.

The Church calendar is a book, a book filled with mystagogical signs and hints which, if read
properly and attentively, disclose the full light of Christian wisdom.

What is more, reading this "book" precipitates an annual renewal of, or re-initiation into, the
whole of our Christian faith, from our fall into sin to our redemption in Christ, from our
faltering attempts at holiness to our joyful if not anxious anticipation of contemplating God
face to face.

The liturgical calendar is therefore not only something that illuminates our minds but inflames
our hearts. According to Plato's Republic, the perfect city is one in which citizens experience
identical pleasures and pains at the same time as if the whole community were a single body
wincing or delighting in unison. The Church calendar is the fulfilment of that philosophical
ideal.
(Continued)
 catholic.restorationFrom the exilic pining of Septuagesima to the austerity of Lent, from the
grief of Passiontide to the jubilance of the Pasch, the Church, by staggering its feasts and
observances in a particular order, enables the faithful to experience a number of holy feelings as
one.
Indeed, the emotional range of the traditional Roman rite is perhaps the most variegated in all
of Christendom.

Complex emotions, such as joy-in-penitence (Laetare and Gaudete Sundays) or penitence-in-

joy (the lesser Rogation Days), are not uncommon. Hopeful sorrow, jubilant fasting, cathartic
anguish: all find their home in the pre-conciliar Roman calendar.

By ordering and harmonising our emotions in such a way, this effective panoply serves an
important purpose.

 MY CATHOLIC FAITH

XXIV. Occasions and Sources of Sin

Vice is easily formed, but requires great struggle to overcome it. The longer a man indulges in
vice, the harder is the struggle. He becomes its slave. He is completely carried away by his
passions. Only the great grace of God, coupled with a resolute will, can eradicate vice, once it
is strongly rooted in a man's nature. This is one reason why we must be most careful to avoid
sin, in order not to become victims of vice. If we are so unfortunate as to fall into sin, we must
at once repent and resolve to avoid it in the future.

What are the near occasions of sin? --The near occasions of sin are all persons, places, or things
that may easily lead us into sin.

Most common occasions are:

Bad companions. One who provokes or leads us into sin is not our friend. We must stop going
with that companion.

One rotten apple in a basket of good apples quickly rots the rest. The same is true of human
beings. Sin is a contagious disease. If we do not wish to he infected, we must go far away from
it.

Dance halls. Not every dance is sinful. But many dances are occasions of sin; and public dances
without the presence of respectable adults are extremely dangerous. A safe rule to follow is
never to go to any place where you would be ashamed to take your virtuous mother or sister.

In many dances, the women tend to dress with extravagance and immodesty, just to "follow the
fashion". Sometimes, too, dances are an occasion for the taking of liberties, due to late hours,
and the spirit of unrestrained pleasure.

Bars and liquor saloons. These are very proximate occasions of sin, leading to intemperance,
and worse evils.

Those who frequent saloons are likely to be not only habitual drunkards, but constant gamblers,
who neglect their homes and duties, become involved in disputes, and finally end badly even in
the temporal sense.

Obscene literature. Bad newspapers and magazines are no less dangerous because their
wickedness is often not apparent, many hiding their evil under the guise of cleverness, science,
art, etc.
(Continued)
 catholic.restorationBad periodicals gradually undermine faith and make one insensitive to evil.
It is the duty of every Catholic to subscribe to a Catholic periodical, and never to favor a
wicked press.

Bad books. Many novels are harmless; some are very helpful, but many are positively wicked.
We must be very careful in the selection of the books we read. There are national book clubs
under Catholic auspices. Among them may be mentioned the Catholic Book Club, and the Pro
Parvulis Book Club, headquarters of both of which are in New York City.

These book clubs send members lists of books of merit according to literary standards, and not
offensive to Catholic morals. They publish reviews of current fiction most useful for the
general reader. We must remember that poisonous food will only kill the body, but poisonous
reading kills the soul.

Indecent pictures and shows. Today many moving pictures and theatrical shows are not decent.
We must be careful to choose only the good, those approved by the National Legion of
Decency. This Legion, working under the hierarchy, each week issues a list giving the moral
evaluation of current films; it reviews and classifies. It asks every Catholic to take a pledge not
to patronize lewd pictures.

This pledge is nothing extraordinary for any decent person, Catholic or non-Catholic; it merely
puts down clearly something that any upright person is obliged in conscience to do.

The Legion of Decency was formed in order to unite the laity with the hierarchy in a persistent
drive to prevent the showing of lewd pictures. If every decent person kept away from such
obscene shows, the producers would surely make better pictures. Supply is according to the
demand; we get what we ask for.

How should we act towards occasions of sin? --We should never seek, and always try to avoid,
occasions of sin.

It is wrong voluntarily to seek the occasions of sin. "He that loveth the danger shall perish in it"
(Ecclus. 3:27). However, those who by their calling or other necessity are continually exposed
to such dangerous occasions, as priests, officials, doctors, and others, must put their trust in
God, Who will give them grace and protect them.
(Continued)
 catholic.restorationWe must avoid occasions of sin as soon as we perceive them.

If one goes to the theatre and sees that the play is an indecent play, he must stand up and leave
at once. Otherwise he commits a sin. He will fall into further sin, and commit besides the sin of
not avoiding the occasion.

What are the chief sources of actual sin? --The chief sources of actual sin are: pride,
covetousness, lust, anger, gluttony, envy, and sloth, and these are commonly called capital sins.

They are called capital, from the Latin caput (which means head), because they are the heads or
sources of all sins. Thus they originate sins of luxury, gossip, excessive ambition, etc.
They are called capital sins, not because they are the greatest sins in themselves, but because
they are the chief reasons why men commit sin. They are the origin of every sin, all other sins
arising from them as from their fountainhead.

These sins are termed deadly, because they are either mortal of their own nature, or may easily
become mortal. They may be mortal or venial according as the matter is serious or less serious.

These sins are called vices, because they produce permanent disorders in the soul. They are the
seven fatal diseases of the soul, which end in death.

He who will be a friend of God must divest himself of these vices. Before we can plant the
beautiful garden of virtues, we must root up the thorns and weeds growing out of these deadly
sins.

Does God punish sin? --Yes, God punishes sin, partly in this life, but chiefly after death.

In this life sinners suffer from remorse of conscience, fear, and unhappiness. Their sin often
brings upon them disease or death, the hatred and scorn of their fellow-men, and other temporal
punishments. Even on earth, "the wages of sin is death". Thus a robber or murderer is ever
afraid his crime will be detected. If it is discovered, he is sent to prison or to the electric chair.

The punishment of the sinner is fully meted out to him only after death. Then the unrepentant
sinner is punished in hell. Justice is not always done in this world, where the wicked often
prosper and the just are made to suffer.
(Continued)

the next life that the evil he does is given its full and just punishment.

 Saint John Berchmans

Jesuit Seminarian
(1599-1621)

Born in 1599 in Diest, a town of northern Belgium near Brussels and Louvain, this angelic
young Saint was the oldest of five children. Two of his three brothers became priests, and his
father, after the death of John's mother when he was eleven years old, entered religion and
became a Canon of Saint Sulpice.

John was a brilliant student from his most tender years, manifesting also a piety which far
exceeded the ordinary. Beginning at the age of seven, he studied for three years at the local
communal school with an excellent professor. And then his father, wanting to protect the
sacerdotal vocation already evident in his son, confided him to a Canon of Diest who lodged
students aspiring to the ecclesiastical vocation. After three years in that residence, the family's
financial situation had declined owing to the long illness of the mother, and John was told he
would have to return and learn a trade. He pleaded to be allowed to continue his studies. And
his aunts, who were nuns, found a solution through their chaplain; he proposed to take John
into his service and lodge him.

Saint John was ordinarily first in his classes at the large school, a sort of minor seminary, even
when he had to double his efforts in order to rejoin his fellow students, all of excellent talent,
who sometimes had preceded him for a year or more in an assigned discipline. He often
questioned his Superiors as to what was the most perfect thing to say or do in the various
circumstances in which he found himself. Such was the humility which caused the young to
advance without ceasing on the road to heaven. Later he continued his studies at Malines, also
not distant from Diest, under the tutelage of another ecclesiastic, who assigned to him the
supervision of three young boys of a noble family. In all that John did he sought perfection, and
he never encountered anything but the highest favor for his services, wherever he was placed.
(Continued)
 catholic.restorationHe found his vocation through his acquaintance with the Jesuits of that city,
and manifested his determination to pursue his course, although his father and family opposed
it for a time. It had been decided that he would continue his studies at the Jesuit novitiate of
Malines, with about 70 other novices. With another young aspirant, he was waiting in the parlor
to be introduced, when he saw in the garden a coadjutor Brother turning over the ground in the
garden. He proposed to his companion to go and help him, saying: Could we begin our
religious life better than with an act of humility and charity? And with no hesitation, both went
to offer their assistance. How many young persons in that situation would have thought of such
an offer? This incident reveals the profound charity and interior peace which characterized this
young religious at all times.

As a novice he taught catechism to the children in the regions around Malines. He made his
instructions so lively and interesting that the country folk preferred his lessons to the ordinary
sermons. The children became attached to him, and in a troop would conduct him back to the
novitiate, where he distributed holy pictures, medals and rosaries to them. At the end of his
novitiate in 1619 he was destined to go to Rome to begin serious application to philosophy, but
his superiors decided to send him home for a few days first. A shock awaited him at the train
station of Malines, where he was expecting to meet his father; he had died a week earlier. John
was given time to take the dispositions necessary to provide for the younger brothers and sister.
When he departed, it was apparently with a premonition that he would perhaps never see them
again, for he said in a letter to the Canon of Diest with whom he had dwelt, to tell the younger
ones for him: Increase in piety, in fear of God and in knowledge. Adieu.

With a fellow novice he began the two months' journey on foot to Rome, by way of Paris,
Lyons and Loreto, where the two assisted at the Christmas Midnight Mass. Both of these two
young Jesuits would die within three years' time, his companion in a matter of several months.
(Continued)
 catholic.restorationJohn had time during these three years to give unceasing proofs of his
already perfected sanctity; nothing that he did was left to chance, but entrusted to the
intercession of his Heavenly Mother, to whom his devotion continued to increase day by day.
He made an extraordinary effort during an intense heat wave in the summer of 1621,
participating splendidly in a debate, which took place at a certain distance from the Jesuit
residence, despite the fact he did not feel well. Two days later he was felled by a fever, which
continued implacably to mine his already slight resistance, and he died in August of that year,
after one week of illness. The story of his last days is touching indeed; in a residence of several
hundred priests and students, there was none who did not follow with anxiety and compassion
the progress of his illness. When the infirmarian told his patient that he should probably receive
Communion the next morning — an exception to the rule prescribing it for Sundays only, in
those times — John said, In Viaticum? and received a sad affirmative answer. He himself was
transported with joy and embraced the Brother; the latter broke into tears. A priest who knew
John well went to him the next morning and asked him if there was anything troubling or
saddening him, and John replied, Absolutely nothing.

He asked that his mattress be placed on the floor, and knelt to receive his Lord; when the Father
Rector pronounced the words of the Ritual: Receive, Brother, in viaticum, the Body of Our
Lord Jesus Christ, all in attendance wept. Their angelic, ever joyous and affectionate young
novice was called to leave them; no clearer tribute than their tears could have been offered to
the reality of his sanctity, his participation in the effusive goodness of the divine nature.
Devotion to his memory spread rapidly in Belgium; already in 1624 twelve engraving
establishments of Anvers had published his portrait. He was canonized in 1888 by Pope Leo
XIII, at the same time as two other Jesuits who lived during the first century of that Society's
existence, so fruitful in sanctity — Peter Claver and Alphonsus Rodriguez.

 The Battle of Montgisard

The Battle of Montgisard took place on 25 November 1177, in between the Second and Third
crusades. It was fought between the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem, led by the 16-year-old
King Baldwin IV, and the Ayyubid Sultanate led by Saladin.

In 1177 King Baldwin IV learned that Saladin was planning an invasion of the Kingdom of
Jerusalem. Despite being only 16 and slowly dying of leprosy, King Baldwin gathered a small
group of knights and traveled to the borders to prepare a defense. According to the medieval
chronicler William of Tyre, there were only 375 Christian knights defending the Kingdom
against Sladin's 26,000-man army. These numbers are often disputed, but it is certain that the
crusaders were vastly outnumbered by a very significant margin.

The crusaders caught Saladin's army completely by surprise while they were marching towards
Jerusalem. Saladin's army panicked and began scrambling. King Baldwin prayed to God for
victory and ordered the relic of the True Cross to be raised in front of his troops, which was met
with cheers. The crusaders quickly attacked the Muslims, inflicting heavy casualties. Saladin's
men were overwhelmed; the invasion force was almost entirely destroyed. Saladin himself only
narrowly avoided capture by escaping on a camel. Only a tenth of his army made it back home.

King Baldwin celebrated by erecting a Benedictine monastery on the battlefield dedicated to St.
Catherine, whose feast day coincided with the battle.

Second-in-command of this battle was the crusader Raynald of Châtillon, Prince of Antioch.
Notable Combatants: • Odo de St. Amand, Grand Master of the Knights Templar
• Baldwin, Lord of Ramla
• Balian, Lord of Ibelin
• Renaud, Lord of Sidon
• Joscelin III, Count of Edessa

 St. Erasmus
Bishop and Martyr
(† c.303)

The pious historians of the early Christian times state, as a rule, only what the saints did and
suffered for the Faith, and how they died. They deemed the martyrs' glorious combat and their
victorious entrance into heaven more instructive, and therefore more important, than a lengthy
description of their lives.

Hence we know little of the native place and the youth of St. Erasmus, except that at the
beginning of the fourth century of the Christian era he was bishop of Antioch in Asia Minor,
the city where the name of "Christian" first came into use. When a long and cruel persecution
broke out under the Emperor Diocletian, St. Erasmus hid himself in the mountains of the
Libanon, and led there, for some years, an austere life of penance and fasting. Finally he was
discovered and dragged before the judge.

At first, persuasions and kindness were employed to induce him to deny the Faith, but when
these efforts failed recourse was had to the most cruel torments. He was scourged, and finally
cast into a caldron filled with boiling oil, sulphur, and pitch. In this seething mass God
preserved him from harm, and by this miracle many spectators were converted to the Faith. Still
more enraged thereat, the judge ordered the holy bishop to be thrown into prison and kept there
in chains till he died of starvation. But God delivered him, as He had once delivered St. Peter.
One night an angel appeared to him and said: "Erasmus, follow me! Thou shalt convert a great
many." Thus far he had led numbers to the Faith by suffering, now he was to convert multitudes
as a missionary.
Delivered from prison by the power of God, he went forth into many lands and preached the
Faith. Mighty in word and deed, he wrought many miracles and converted great numbers of
heathens. At length he came to Italy, where Emperor Maximin persecuted the Christians as
fiercely as did Diocletian in the East. As soon as Maximin heard of Erasmus and the
conversions effected by his preaching and miracles, he ordered the slaughter of three hundred
of the converts. Erasmus himself was most cruelly tortured, but to no purpose. He remained
firm. (Continued)
 catholic.restorationThen cast into prison, he was again liberated by an angel.

At last the hour of deliverance came to this valiant and apostolic confessor and martyr of
Christ. He heard a heavenly voice, saying: "Erasmus, come now to the heavenly city and rest in
the place which God has prepared for thee with the holy martyrs and prophets. Enjoy now the
fruit of thy labor. By thee I was honored in heaven and on earth." Erasmus, looking toward
heaven, saw a splendid crown, and the apostles and prophets welcoming him. He bowed his
head, saying: "Receive, O Lord, the soul of thy servant!" and peacefully breathed forth his spirit
on June 2, 308.

LESSON
The tortures which St. Erasmus suffered for the Faith seem almost incredible, and the events
related of him are truly wonderful. Martyrdom and miracles illustrated the doctrine he
preached; he converted multitudes and gained the crown of heaven.
Perhaps you say that in our times there are no longer any martyrs, at least not in civilized
countries. Are you quite sure of it? St. Augustine writes: "Peace also has its martyrs." It is
certainly not easy to suffer torments like the martyrs and to receive finally the death-dealing
blow of the sword. But is it not also a martyrdom to suffer for years the pains of a lingering
illness? Again, how difficult the combat with the world, the flesh, and the powers of hell! How
carefully must we watch and pray to gain the victory! This is our martyrdom. Let us imitate the
example of the holy martyrs in bearing the trials and sufferings of life, and we shall receive, as
they did, the crown of heaven.

 St. Catherine of Alexandria

Virgin, Martyr, Patroness of Students and Young Girls

(† Fourth Century)

St. Catherine was born at Alexandria, of pagan parents. She was gifted with great personal
beauty, and possessed so extraordinary a mind, that she mastered all the sciences which, at that
period, flourished in her native city. The only science of which she had no knowledge was that
of eternal salvation; but this, too, she at last obtained in the following manner: It seemed to her,
in her sleep, that the Queen of Heaven was standing before her in wondrous beauty, carrying
her divine Son in her arms. But the latter, turning His face from her in displeasure, said that
Catherine was ugly, because she had not been baptized. Catherine awoke, and, while thinking
over her dream, she was inspired by Heaven to resolve to become a Christian.
When sufficiently instructed, she received holy baptism, after which the Blessed Virgin again
appeared to her with Christ, who, looking tenderly at Catherine, placed a ring on her finger, as a
sign that He had chosen her for His bride. On awaking, she found a ring on her finger, and,
without delay, determined to consecrate her virginity to the Lord, and to become a more
zealous Christian.

Maximin, the emperor, had appointed a certain day to celebrate a public sacrifice in honor of
the false gods, and all the inhabitants of the city were commanded to take part in it. Catherine
was deeply grieved to see that the people should thus honor the devil, and not have any
knowledge of the true God. Arming herself with courage, she went fearlessly into the temple,
where the emperor personally assisted at the sacrifice, and, addressing him with Christian
freedom, she represented to him his blindness in worshipping idols, and endeavored to
convince him of the truth of Christianity. The emperor was greatly surprised that a maiden
should dare to speak thus to him, but was, at the same time, fascinated by the appearance and
eloquence of Catherine. (Continued)
 catholic.restorationNo sooner had he returned to his palace, than Catherine again appeared
before him, and spoke so forcibly of the falsity of the heathen gods, and of the truth of the
Christian religion, that the emperor knew not what to reply.
What he was unable to do, he thought others could do for him; therefore he summoned some of
the most learned men into his presence, to answer Catherine's arguments, and persuade her to
renounce the Christian faith. But the Almighty, Who, by a feeble maiden, could bring to naught
the wisdom of the pagan sages, inspired St. Catherine with such eloquence, that she succeeded
in convincing them of their error so completely, that they publicly renounced it, and proclaimed
the Christian faith as the only true one. The emperor, enraged at so unexpected an issue,
ordered these new confessors of Christ to be immediately executed. He then endeavored to win
Catherine from her faith by flatteries and promises; and when he found that his words made no
impression on the mind of the virgin, he began to threaten, and finally sent her away to be
tortured. She was scourged so cruelly and so long, that her whole body was covered with
wounds, from which the blood flowed in streams. The spectators wept with pity; but Catherine,
strengthened by God, stood with her eyes raised to heaven, without giving a sign of suffering or
fear.
After this cruel treatment she was dragged into a dungeon, and, by the command of the
emperor, was left without food, in order that she might slowly pine away. But God sent an
Angel, who healed her wounds and filled her heart with indescribable comfort. The Lord
Himself appeared to her, encouraged her to fight bravely, and promised her the crown of
everlasting glory. Some writers add, that the empress, having heard much of Catherine's
wonderful learning, eloquence and fortitude, had deep compassion upon her, and secretly went
at night with Porphyrius, the captain of the guard, to visit her in her dungeon. When she beheld
Catherine's wounds healed, and the virgin resplendent with more than human beauty, she was
speechless with surprise. (Continued)
 catholic.restorationCatherine made this miracle an occasion to speak to her of the omnipotence
of the Most High, and of the falsity of the heathen gods. She spoke with such overwhelming
eloquence, that the empress, as well as Porphyrius, promised to embrace Christianity.

Some days later, when the emperor was informed that Catherine was not only still alive but in
better health than ever, he had her brought before him, and again assailed her with promises and
menaces. Finding, however, that she was as firm as before, he gave orders that she should be
bound to a wheel studded with sharply-pointed spikes and knives. The Christian heroine was
not horrified at this inhuman order, but called with unwavering trust on God. When the
executioners had seized her, and bound her on the wheel, the Almighty sent an Angel, who
loosened the fetters and broke the wheel to pieces. Many of the spectators, on beholding this
miracle, cried aloud: "Great is the God of the Christians! He alone is the true God!" Maximin
remained blind, and was thinking of new torments, when the empress came forward,
reproached him with his barbarity towards a weak and innocent maiden, and boldly confessed
that she herself recognized and worshipped no other god but the God of the Christians. The
tyrant, hearing these words, lost all control over himself, and ordered the empress and
Porphyrius to be immediately beheaded, and Catherine, as an enemy of the gods, to be taken to
the public market-place and put to death by the sword. The fearless virgin went joyfully to the
appointed place, exhorted all the people who had come to witness her death to abandon
idolatry, prayed to God for their conversion, and then received the stroke that sent her soul to
heaven. Ancient authors testify that milk flowed from the body of St. Catherine instead of
blood, as had formerly happened at the death of St. Paul. Her body, they add, was miraculously
carried by angels and buried on Mount Sinai, in Arabia. (Continued)
 catholic.restorationPRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS.

I. Before Catherine was baptized she saw that the Divine Child in the Blessed Virgin's arms
turned its face from her; but after she had been received in the holy Church by baptism, it
looked most tenderly at her. The reason of this was that before baptism, she was in sin, and
after it, she was cleansed and endowed with spiritual beauty. Sin deforms the soul of man and
makes it horrible in the eyes of God. Baptism, and after baptism, true penance, cleanses it again
from all impurities, and gives it such beauty, that even the Almighty looks upon it with love.
What is the appearance of your soul? If it is stained with one single sin, it is more deformed and
horrible in the sight of God, than anything on earth. It resembles Lucifer, but is more horrible to
look upon than he. Lucifer was the most beautiful of Angels, but one sin changed him to such a
degree, that if you saw him, you would die of horror.
How dreadful must be the appearance of your soul, if it is disfigured not only by one, but by
many sins? Why then do you not hasten to do penance, which will cleanse like a second
baptism? Why do you not endeavor to keep your soul clean and beautiful? If your face bore a
blemish, which made you an object of disgust to every one, would you not make every effort to
remove it? Why not do the same with your soul, which, on account of sin, is a horror to the
Almighty? If you were assured that, immediately after committing sin, you would lose all
beauty of face and form, and that you would be changed into a frightful monster, would you
commit the sin? Most certainly not. Why then do you become guilty of it, knowing that it
deforms your soul, that it destroys all its beauty, and changes it, in the eyes of God and all the
Saints, into a most frightful monster? "Those who wish to preserve the beauty of their soul,
avoid sin; for there is nothing that deforms the soul so much as sin," writes St. Lawrence
Justinian. (Continued)
 catholic.restorationII. Catherine took great pains to acquire worldly knowledge, but at last
became acquainted also with the most necessary of all sciences, that of salvation. All other
sciences would have been useless to her without this one. There are a great many persons in our
days, who study many different sciences and arts; they spare neither expense nor labor nor time
to become proficient in them, and they are honored by the world for their acquirements. But the
science of salvation, the one most needed of all, is not attained nor esteemed. We find persons
in the higher stations of life, who know not even the first principles of the true faith. Other
knowledge they have acquired, but they know less of the science of salvation than many of the
lower classes, less than children ten or twelve years old. What does all their science profit
them? of what avail is all they have learned, when they do not study the science of salvation
and do not conform their lives to its precepts? Should you ask in what the science consists, St.
Thomas will answer you as follows: "In knowing, first, what you must believe; secondly, what
you must hope and fear; thirdly, what and whom you must love; fourthly, what you must do;
and fifthly, what you must avoid to gain life everlasting." To say this in fewer words, it consists
in knowing what we must believe, do, and avoid in order to gain heaven. And where can we
learn this science? Certainly not in worldly, or immoral books, not in the theatre, not in the
society of frivolous people; but in sermons and instructions, in devout books and pious
meditations. Have you heretofore endeavoured to attain this science? Have you employed to
this end all necessary means? Do you conduct yourself in accordance with the precepts of this
science? Three important questions which well deserve to be seriously considered. For if you
do not endeavour to learn the science of salvation, if you do not employ the necessary means
for learning it, you never will learn it, and hence will be for ever unhappy, for your ignorance
will be wilful, and therefore guilty. (Continued)
 catholic.restorationAnd if, though you have acquired this great science, you do not live in
accordance with its teachings, then your knowledge of it will help you as little as it helps the
devils and the damned, who also knew what was necessary to gain salvation, but lived not in
accordance with their knowledge. "It is of no avail," says St. Prosper, "to learn what we must
do, and not to rule our conduct accordingly." Christ says: "If you know these things, you shall
be blessed if you do them." (John xiii.) Knowledge alone does not save, but living and acting in
accordance with our knowledge, gains us life everlasting. To know and not to act accordingly,
makes us deserving of punishment. Christ Himself says of the servant who knew the will of his
Lord and acted not accordingly: "He shall be beaten with many stripes." (Luke xii.) What is to
be done, therefore, it is easy to infer. Endeavour to learn the science of salvation, employ all the
means necessary for its acquirement, and then regulate your life by your knowledge. Parents are
obliged, under pain of eternal punishment, to see that their children are early instructed in this
science, which is more needful knowledge for them than any other. Woe to those parents who
neglect this duty!
 Our Oldest City and First Thanksgiving
Marian T. Horvat, Ph.D.

The first American Thanksgiving was neither at Plymouth Rock in 1621 nor in Texas on April
20, 1568 when Don Juan de Oñate crossed the Rio Grande and took formal possession of
present day El Paso. This honor belongs to the city of St. Augustine, Florida, the first and oldest
city of our present day United States. The landing of Captain General Pedro Menendez de
Aviles and his fleet of soldiers and colonists – accompanied by priests – on the coast of Florida
on September 8, 1565 has all the qualification to count it as the first official Thanksgiving Day
in our country:

Mass of thanksgiving St. Augustine, September 8, 1565 • It was the first permanent European
settlement in North America. There had been other attempts by the Spanish to establish
colonies in Florida and Texas, but all were short-lived. • In an official ceremony Don Pedro
Menendez came ashore amid the sounding of trumpets, artillery salutes and the firing of
cannons to claim the land for King Philip II and Spain. One of the priests, Fr. Francisco Lopez
de Mendoza Grajales, who had gone ashore the previous day, advanced to meet him, chanting
the Te Deum Laudamus and carrying a cross which Menendez and those with him reverently
kissed. Then the 500 soldiers, 200 sailors and 100 families and artisans, along with the
Timucuan Indians from the nearby village of Seloy, gathered at a makeshift altar, and a Mass in
honor of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was said. • The Mass was followed by a feast shared
by the Spanish and the Timucuan Indians. The Timucuans brought wild turkey, venison,
oysters and giant clams, as well as maize, beans, squash, nuts and fruits. The Spaniards
contribution was cocido, a stew made with pork, garbanzo beans and onions, along with
biscuits, olive oil and red wine. (Continued)

 catholic.restorationIn his well-researched book on the State of Florida titled Cross in the Sand,
Dr. Michael Gannon duly affirmed that this Mass and feast was “the first community act of
religion and thanksgiving in the first permanent European settlement in the land.” (1) Properly
speaking, the history books should acknowledge this feast as the first Thanksgiving. But, as the
saying goes, the victors write the history. So, for many years, the textbooks only placed
emphasis on the English settlement in Plymouth, ignoring the fact that the Spanish were here
long before them.
I believe two positive factors are beginning to change that picture. First, many traditional
Catholics – like most of the readers of this website – are interested in learning more about their
Catholic roots in America, and want to know disregarded episodes like this one. Second, the
growing Hispanic population in our country – and particularly the States of Florida, Texas and
the Southwest – is sparking interest in the nation's Spanish heritage.

Founding of St. Augustine, Florida

In St. Augustine, for example, the city's founding is being celebrated each year with speeches
and pageantry, starting with the historical re-enactment of Don Pedro Menendez’ landing and
the Mass at the Mission Nombre de Dios. Don Menendez gave this beautiful name to the
landing site, and today it is the oldest mission in the United States. In 1965 a 200-foot-high-
cross was erected on the Mission at the exact site of the city’s founding. There is even a First
Thanksgiving Cooking Contest that is held to reproduce the food and drink that would have
been served at the original feast.
Local celebrations like these are helping to make the people of Florida aware of St. Augustine’s
rich past - which includes a Catholic Thanksgiving that long preceded the one celebrated by the
Puritans.
The Huguenot threat
After Juan Ponce de Leon discovered the peninsula in 1513, named it La Florida (covered with
flowers) and claimed it for Spain, the Spanish Crown made six attempts to establish a mission
colony there. None were successful. (Continued)
 catholic.restorationFierce storms at sea, starvation, hostile Indians and every genre of
misfortune ended each expedition in failure.

Mission Cross, Nombre de Dios, St. Augustine

Discouraged by those vain attempts, in 1561 Philip II decided that no further attempt should be
made to colonize the eastern coast. That decision changed abruptly, however, with a French
intrusion of Huguenots who established the small colony of Fort Caroline in present day
Jacksonville.
This was a time of violent religious wars between the Huguenots and Catholics in France, with
the Spanish Crown supporting the Catholics. The chief of the Huguenot faction was Admiral
Gaspard de Coligny, who was looking for a colony in the New World to have a secure place to
send his fellow-Protestants persecuted in France. In 1555, he had organized an expedition of
500 colonists who landed in Brazil on an island in the Rio de Janeiro bay. Their fort, however,
was destroyed by the Portuguese in 1560. The Huguenots remained in Rio for some time until
1567, when they were definitively expelled in a battle with the Portuguese navy.
After this first defeat in Brazil, Coligny turned his eyes toward the coastline of peninsular
Florida. In 1564 he sent out another expedition of Huguenot soldiers and settlers to establish an
outpost called Fort Caroline. The French colony there represented a serious threat to Spanish
shipping and the safety of the Indies. Not only would Spanish ships traveling with gold from
the New World to the Old through the Bahama Channel be exposed to seizure by the French,
but even the coastal towns could be attacked at any time. Further, the Catholic Spanish King
wanted to avoid heresy spreading in the New World.
When news leaked to the Spanish court that a French fleet led by the sea Captain Jean Ribault
was setting out to reinforce the struggling colony with ships, arms and food, Philip II’s reaction
was swift. This was foreign encroachment on Spain’s claims in Florida recognized in a 1559
Treaty with France. A Spanish fleet must be dispatched to stop Jean Ribault, destroy Fort
Caroline, secure Florida for Spain and finally establish a permanent Catholic community along
the coast of Florida. (C)
 catholic.restorationThe Menendez expedition

Pedro Menendez Aviles

The man to whom Philip entrusted the task of driving the French out of Florida had both the
experience and strong will needed to accomplish the mission. He was Don Pedro Menendez de
Avilés, one of 20 children of an ancient family of the Asturias. As Captain General of the
Indies Fleet, he was well acquainted with the routes to New Spain and realized the danger of
having French so near the Bahama Channel that Spanish fleets regularly crossed. As a Catholic,
he abhorred the prospective that the Huguenots might spread their infectious doctrine among
Florida’s Indians in the New World.
After a failed attempt to cross the sea because of bad weather, Menendez set sail from Puerto
Rico for La Florida with five vessels and 800 soldiers, artisans and settlers, and four secular
priests on August 5, 1565. His flagship bore the proud name San Pelayo, a tribute to the warrior
who started the Reconquista in Spain.
Thirty-four days later, under his command the Catholic colony of St. Augustine was founded –
so named because land was sighted on August 28, the feast day of St. Augustine. On September
20, Menendez and 500 of his soldiers marched on Fort Caroline, captured it and renamed it San
Mateo – St. Matthew. (2)
That month, Menendez sent a letter to the King reporting the progress of the expedition. After
dealing with practical matters, he affirmed his content to see the Holy Faith established in the
new land: “Let Your Majesty rest assured that if I had a million more, I would spend it all upon
this undertaking, because it is of such great service to God Our Lord, and for the increase of our
Holy Catholic Faith and the service of Your Majesty. And therefore I have offered to Our Lord,
that all that I shall find, win and acquire, in this world shall be for the planting of the Gospel in
this land, and the enlightenment of its natives, and thus I pledge myself to Your Majesty."(3)
(Continued)
 catholic.restorationOnce again, Admiral Coligny’s plan to establish a haven for the French
Huguenots had failed. Instead of becoming the refuge for the 40,000 French Huguenots that
France wanted to rid herself of, (4) Florida became Catholic. Around its corner was the Age of
the Missions that would only end a century later in 1675.

 catholic.restorationThe Advent Wreath

Originating in Germany several hundred years ago, it has become a cherished custom
for many families throughout America. Children are deeply impressed with the beautiful
symbolism of the Advent Wreath. Their anticipation of Christmas, the Birthday of
Christ, increases as the ceremonies progress each week of Advent.

Christians preparing for their feast of light and life-the Nativity of the Savior-found this
wreath an appropriate means of doing so. Adding one light for each of the four Sundays
in Advent, they think about the darkness without God after the Fall, and the growing
hope for salvation, enkindled in Paradise, and nourished through the ages by the
prophets up to John, the Precursor, until the Morning Star who announces the coming of
the Sun came forth: the Virgin who bore a Son.

The wreath without beginning and end stands for eternity; the evergreens for life and
growth; the four candles, preferably of beeswax and blessed and set aside since
Candlemas, represent the ages "sitting in darkness and the shadow of death", each
candle adding more light until Christmas, when the light from the wreath sets off, as it
were, the blaze of light on the "tree of life", the Christmas tree-for the time is fulfilled.

The Blessing of the Wreath

The Blessing should take place on Saturday evening before the First Sunday of Advent.
Before the evening meal the father or, in his absence, the head of the household,
performs the blessing in the presence of the entire family. The candles are lit while
everyone sings the hymn, "O Come, O Come Emmanuel." Father: Our help is in the
Name of the Lord.
Family: Who hath made Heaven and Earth.

Let us pray:

O God, by Whose Word all things are sanctified, pour forth Thy blessing upon this
wreath, and grant that we who use it may prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ,
and may receive from Thee abundant graces. Through Christ our Lord. R. Amen.
(Continued)
 catholic.restorationThe father then sprinkles the wreath with holy water. Each night the
candles are lighted before the evening meal while the Advent hymn is sung. The prayers
proper to each week of Advent follow, and the second verse of the Advent hymn is sung
at the end. For the first week, one candle is lighted by the youngest child during the
hymn, and left burning throughout the evening meal. Two candles are lighted by the
oldest child during the second week; three candles are lighted by the mother during the
third week. All four candles are lighted by the father during the fourth week of Advent.

 catholic.restorationMY CATHOLIC FAITH
XXV. Pride, Covetousness, Lust

Pride makes one admire himself, in the belief that his excellence, imagined or real, is
the result of his own worth. Our Lord condemned pride in the parable of the Pharisee
and the Publican (1). Jesus said that the humble and repentant publican was justified in
the eyes of God, while the proud Pharisee went home unjustified. Covetousness is one
of the ugliest of sins. It was a sin of Judas. He loved money so much that he even
betrayed Our Lord for thirty pieces of silver(2). What is pride? --Pride is an inordinate
love of one's own excellence, an excessive self-esteem.

Our Lord is the best example of meekness and patience. Did He use His almighty power
to punish those who did Him evil? For hours He hung meekly on the cross, until He
died. Every day God is patient with sinners, giving them time to change their ways.
God, the Supreme One, is not proud.

1. The proud man overestimates himself, and believes himself the source of his own
excellence. The virtue of humility, which disposes us to acknowledge our limitations, is
opposed to pride.
Some are proud of their appearance; others of their family, talents, position, money, and
the virtues they imagine, they possess. Even if we do have excellent abilities or
possessions, we should not be proud of them, remembering that they all come from
God. Instead, we should be humbly thankful, and see in what way we can make a return
to God for such gifts. "Every proud man is an abomination to the Lord" (Prov. 16:5). 2.
Pride may be called the mother of all vices, for most sins can be traced to it. From pride
arise ambition, vanity, presumption, disobedience, hypocrisy, obstinacy in sin. "For
pride is the beginning of all sin: he that holdeth it shall be filled with maledictions and it
shall ruin him in the end" (Ecclus. 10:15). "Never suffer pride to reign in thy mind or in
thy words, for from it all perdition took its beginning" (Tob. 4:14). Pride was the sin of
our First Parents, who wanted to be as great as God. It was the sin of King Pharaoh; he
was so proud that in spite of the miracles Moses worked, he refused to be convinced.
(Continued)
 catholic.restorationFor this God "hardened his heart" (Exod. 9:12); that is, God
permitted him to close the window of his soul against the grace of the Holy Ghost,
"Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, the Lord has rejected thee" (1 Kings
15:26). 3. The proud man tries to attract notice and praise, strives after honors,
distinctions, and other worldly favors.

He is over-confident in himself, and despises the assistance of God. Pride was the sin of
Lucifer. The proud man pretends to be greater than he is, and tries by all manner of
means to attract the praise of others, even using false humility to do so.

4. God hates pride, and punishes it severely, He often punishes secret pride by
withdrawing His assistance from the proud man. And deprived of God's aid, the proud
man often falls into grievous sins leading to his humiliation.
"The beginning of the pride of man is to fall off from God" (Ecclus. 10:14). "God resists
the proud" (1 Pet. 5:5). "Everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled" (Luke 14:11).
Thus the proud King Herod was eaten up by worms and died. Thus, the proud Roman
Empire fell and became nothing. Our Lord pointed out the pride in the heart of the
Pharisee, and praised the humble publican.

5. If we, however, despise sin as beneath us, that is not pride, but a virtuous self respect.

A decent regard for cleanliness and neatness is not vanity. The ambition to exceed in
good things, as in studies, in order to make the best use of God's gifts, is to be
commended. God wishes us to be His excellent children. (See Chapter 44, on Humility,
Liberality, Chastity)

What is covetousness? --Covetousness is the excessive love for, and seeking after,
wealth and other worldly possessions.

1. Covetousness is also called avarice. A covetous person strives for more riches than he
requires, and is never content, however much he already possesses.
He greedily clings to what he has, and is stingy and hates to give anything away. For
money Judas betrayed the Lord. "There is not a more wicked thing than to love money;
for such a one setteth even his own soul to sale" (Ecclus. 10:10). (Continued)
 catholic.restoration"Take heed and guard yourselves from all covetousness, for a man's
life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions" (Luke 12:15). We meet with
covetous persons among both rich and poor. Often among the rich there is money
without avarice, and among the poor, avarice without money.

2. From covetousness arise hard-heartedness towards the poor, lying, cheating, usury,
defrauding laborers of wages, and other sins.
"Those who seek to become rich fall into temptation and a snare . . . For covetousness is
the root of all evils" (1 Tim. 6:9-10). It destroys faith, for the avaricious are so absorbed
in money-getting that they have no time for their spiritual welfare.

3. To provide for one's future and that of one's family is praiseworthy. To avoid waste
and extravagance is a virtue.

To accumulate even considerable wealth, by proper means, is not wrong. The rich,
however, must remember their obligation to use their wealth for the glory of God, not
for their own pride.

4. Liberality, which disposes us rightly to use worldly goods, is opposed to

covetousness. (See Chapter 44, on Humility, Liberality, Chastity)
The avaricious man is very foolish. He works hard all his life and becomes hated by
men: he earns besides eternal damnation after death and all for nothing. When he dies
all he has are a few feet of earth for his grave; his money is left to heirs who most
probably ridicule his miserliness or waste the money to gain which he lost his soul. "For
when he shall die, he shall take nothing away; nor shall his glory descend with him" (Ps.
48:18).
(Continued)
 catholic.restorationWhat is lust? --Lust is the inordinate seeking of the pleasures of the
flesh.

1. Lust defiles a man as no other sin does. It degrades man to the level of the beast.
Pride is the sin commited by Lucifer, avarice by Judas, and lust by the brute.
Of all vices, lust is most severely punished on earth. It leads to loss of health and reason.
It was the cause of the Deluge. It was the cause for the destruction with fire and
brimstone of Sodom and Gomorrha. "But immorality and every uncleanness or
covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as becomes saints" (Ephes. 5:3). 2.
Those tempted to lust should remember that man was made to the image and likeness of
God. Will they so rashly destroy that image, to make themselves like to beasts? In fact,
beasts are better than lustful men, for beasts act in that manner from instinct; they have
no soul like God.
Impurity weakens the will and darkens the understanding. For this reason amendment is
very difficult, and the sinner falls into many other sins. So Solomon, who yielded to
lust, finally lost all his wisdom and turned to worship false gods.

3. From lust spring jealousy, hatred, murder, loss of faith, despair, instability,
worldliness, selfishness, and other sins.
The consequences of lust are seen in the case of Henry VIII. It was the cause of his
apostasy, and his apostasy dragged an entire nation into similar apostasy. "For know this
and understand, that no fornicator, or unclean person, or covetous one (for that is
idolatry) has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God" (Ephes. 5:5) (See
Chapter 44, on Humility, Liberality, Chastity)

4. Sodomy, or sins against purity by persons of the same sex, is a form of lust.

catholic.restorationSt. Peter Paschal

Bishop and Martyr

(† 1299)
THIS saint was a native of Valencia, in Spain, and descended of the ancient
family of the Paschals, which had edified the Church by the triumphs of five
glorious martyrs, which it produced under the Moors. Peter’s parents were
virtuous and exceedingly charitable; and St. Peter Nolasco often lodged with
them in his travels. The birth of our saint was ascribed by them to his prayers
and blessing, and the child received from him an early tincture of sincere piety.
Peter Paschal performed his studies under domestic tutors, and, having received
the tonsure, was made canon at Valencia, soon after the king of Arragon had
won that city from the Moors. His preceptor was a priest of Narbonne, a doctor
of divinity, of the faculty of Paris, whom our saint’s parents had ransomed from
the Moors, who had made him a captive. St. Peter Paschal went with him to
Paris, and having studied, preached and taught with great reputation, proceeded
doctor: then returned to Valencia, and, after employing a year in preparing
himself, took the habit of the Order of our Lady, for the redemption of captives,
in 1251. St. Peter Nolasco was his spiritual director at Barcelona, and by the
instructions of that experienced master, our saint made great progress in the
exercises of an interior life. James I. king of Arragon, chose him preceptor to his
son Sanchez, who embraced an ecclesiastical state, afterwards entered himself in
this Order, and was soon after made archbishop of Toledo, in 1262. The prince
being at that time too young to receive the episcopal consecration, St. Peter
Paschal was appointed his suffragan to govern his diocess, and was ordained
titular bishop of Granada: which city was at that time in the hands of the
Mahometans. The prince archbishop died a martyr, of the wounds he received by
the Moors, who had invaded the territory of his diocess, making great havoc in
his flock, in 1275. St. Peter Paschal was by this accident restored to his convent;
but joined the functions of the ministry with those of a contemplative and
penitential life. (Continued)

catholic.restorationHe founded several new convents of his Order at Toledo,

Baëza, Xerez, and particularly at Jaën, twenty-two miles from Granada,
endeavouring by this last to procure the means of affording some spiritual
succours to the afflicted Church of Granada, which he regarded as his own
peculiar charge, though he was not suffered to serve it. The martyrdom of B.
Peter of Chemin, a religious man of the same Order which our saint professed,
and who was put to death at Tunis in 1284, kindled in his breast an ardent desire
of martyrdom. Being made bishop of Jaën in 1696, fearless of all dangers, he
went often to Granada, and there not only ransomed the captives, and instructed
and comforted the Christians, but also preached to the infidels, and reconciled to
the Church several apostates, renegadoes, and others. On this account he was at
length shut up in a dark dungeon, with a severe prohibition that no one should be
allowed to speak to him. Yet he found means there to write an excellent treatise
against Mahometanism, by which several were converted. Hereat some of the
infidels took great offence, and complained to the king, who gave them authority
to put him to death in whatever manner they should think fit. Whilst he was at
his prayers, after having said mass in his dungeon, he was murdered, receiving
two stabs in his body: after which his head was struck off. His martyrdom
happened on the 6th of December, in the year of Christ 1300, of his age seventy-
two. The Christians procured his chalice, sacred ornaments, and discipline, and
secretly buried his body in a grot, in a mountain near Mazzomores. Not long
after, it was translated to Baëza, where it still remains. His name occurs in the
Roman Martyrology on the 6th of December, and on the 23d of October. See the
memorials drawn up for his canonization, and Hist. des Ord. Relig.

The Lives of the Saints. Rev. Alban Butler (1711–73). Volume XII: December.

.
Por la señal...
Señor mío Jesucristo...
.
ORACIÓN PARA TODOS LOS DÍAS
.
No me dejéis,

levántate, toma tu camilla y vuelve a tu casa". Inmediatamente se levantó a la vista de
todos, tomó su camilla y se fue a su casa alabando a Dios.
Todos quedaron llenos de asombro y glorificaban a Dios, diciendo con gran temor:
"Hoy hemos visto cosas maravillosas".

“Cada hombre y mujer, en su sitio y en sus propias circunstancias, tiene una vocación
dada por Dios; de su cumplimiento dependen otras muchas cosas queridas por la
voluntad divina: «De que tú y yo nos portemos como Dios quiere –no lo olvides–
dependen muchas cosas grandes».

For
money Judas betrayed the Lord. "There is not a more wicked thing than to love money;
for such a one setteth even his own soul to sale" (Ecclus. 10:10).

Peter
Paschal was appointed his suffragan to govern his diocess, and was ordained
titular bishop of Granada: which city was at that time in the hands of the
Mahometans. The prince archbishop died a martyr, of the wounds he received by
the Moors, who had invaded the territory of his diocess, making great havoc in
his flock, in 1275. St. Peter Paschal was by this accident restored to his convent;
but joined the functions of the ministry with those of a contemplative and
penitential life. (Continued)

catholic.restorationHe founded several new convents of his Order at Toledo,

Volume XII: December.

.

No me dejéis,

levántate, toma tu camilla y vuelve a tu casa". Inmediatamente se levantó a la vista de
todos, tomó su camilla y se fue a su casa alabando a Dios.
Todos quedaron llenos de asombro y glorificaban a Dios, diciendo con gran temor:
"Hoy hemos visto cosas maravillosas".
.
PALABRA DEL SEÑOR
.
GLORIA A TI SEÑOR JESÚS
.
#Santoevangeliodehoy

“Cada hombre y mujer, en su sitio y en sus propias circunstancias, tiene una vocación
dada por Dios; de su cumplimiento dependen otras muchas cosas queridas por la
voluntad divina: «De que tú y yo nos portemos como Dios quiere –no lo olvides–
dependen muchas cosas grandes».

.
