POSITION: 20180331 Water Quality Analyst Hiring Range: $30.32 - $33.69/hour


Division: Environmental Services Regular Full Time with benefits
Department: Public Works & Natural Resources M-F 7:30AM – 4:00PM

DEFINITION: Under the direct supervision of the Water Quality Laboratory Supervisor, perform complex and advanced
chemical and microbiological analyses on water, wastewater, and related solids and liquids in support of the efficient
operations of the water and wastewater treatment plants. Provide laboratory services to support drinking water, wastewater
and other environmental programs in the Public Works and Natural Resources Department.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES: Perform a variety of advanced chemical and microbiological qualitative and quantitative tests of water
and wastewater samples necessary to insure that plant processes meet water treatment and NPDES permit standards.
Analyze and troubleshoot testing procedures, processes and results. Maintain the laboratory Quality System. This includes,
but is not limited to, preparing and reviewing standard operating procedures, evaluating and setting control limits for quality
control parameters, and periodically reviewing and revising the entire Quality System. Establish testing parameters and
makes recommendations for procedure modifications. Respond to technical questions and issues from operations and
maintenance personnel concerning testing results. Prepare glassware and equipment for laboratory use. Prepare reagents
and solutions for testing. Collect samples for analysis. Perform mathematical and statistical calculations on test results.
Prepare reports summarizing data analyses and calculations. Maintain and repair laboratory equipment and fixtures. Clean
and maintain the laboratory facility. Order and maintain an inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment. Manage and
coordinate all aspects of special projects for customers; projects could include evaluation of water and wastewater plant
performance, watershed, and storm water sampling, assisting the industrial pre-treatment program, testing of special
samples, etc. Enter test results in the laboratory computer database. Maintain chain of custody records, control charts, and
quality control data. Train lower-level employees in laboratory procedures and operations. Performs essential duties and
additional tasks in a manner which enhances City Attributes.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed inside most of the time. May require occasional local travel and fieldwork
under varying and extreme weather conditions. Work includes exposure to: toxic/caustic chemicals and solutions, noise,
open flames, fumes, gases, solvents, oil and grease, electrical energy, slippery walking surfaces, machinery, traffic,
computers and water. Work requires occasional physical efforts including lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, bending,
stopping, kneeling, squatting, and walking and standing for extended periods of time. Eye-hand coordination is needed.
Complete color vision and correctable near vision are needed for conducting and analyzing tests.

QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited
college or university with major course work in chemistry and microbiology or a closely related field and two to four years of
experience performing chemical and microbiological tests in an academic or analytical laboratory.
