I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
a. make inferences from printed materials
b. explain how the elements specific to a selection build the theme

II. Subject Matter:


Topic: The Man with the Hoe by Edwin Markham
Materials: book, music file of “Magtanim ay ‘Di Biro”, speaker, laptop
References: A Journey through Anglo-American Literature

III. Procedure:
A. Review
The teacher calls the students what was the previous lesson all about.
Ask them what they have learned from the previous lesson which was about Literary
Devices.
B. Motivation
The teacher will let the students sing along to an old folk song “Magtanim ay ‘Di
Biro”.
“Magtanim ay ‘Di Biro”
Magtanim ay ‘di biro

‘Di naman makatayo
‘Di naman makaupo

Bisig ko’y namamanhid


Baywang ko’y nangangawit,

C. Activity: Picture Paints Words


The teacher will let the students get their notebooks.
Direction: Observe the two given pictures below. Make inferences out of it and make
a short essay in your notebook.
After five minutes, the teacher will call volunteers to share the essays that they wrote
in their notebook.

D. Analysis
The teacher will ask the students the following questions:
1. In the line, “Bowed by the weight of centuries he leans, Upon his hoe and gazes
on the ground, The emptiness of ages in his fade, And on his back the burden of
the world,” what was the poet trying to imply?
2. If you would have the chance to talk to a “man with the hoe”, what would be your
biggest advice to them?
3. Since change is believed to be constant, how would you help to change the state
of the man with the hoe?
4. How does the society treat them?
5. Going to the time ten years from now, how do you view the lives of the farmers?

E. Abstraction
The teacher will discuss about the poem “The Man with the Hoe” by Edwin
Markham.

F. Application
The class will be divided into two groups. They will have different tasks to perform.

Group 1: We Speak!
Instruction: The group will perform a speech choir of the poem “Man with the Hoe”.
They will be given 10 minutes to practice and prepare for the performance. They will
be graded through a criteria, as follows:

blending & harmony
30 % INTERPRETATION (manner in which the piece is
internalized and presented
20 % STAGE PRESENCE (stage poise, eye contact and audience

Group 2: Creativity Showcase
This activity will be a poster-making activity. The group will be given materials
(white cartolina, pentel pen, coloring materials, pencil, eraser, etc.) They will be graded
through criteria.
Direction: Make a poster based on what you’ve perceived from the poem “The Man
with the Hoe”.

Direction: In a ¼ sheet of paper, answer the following.

V. Assignment: Six Words, One Story


Research five current events of the society. Summarize each events into six words only.
Write it in a ½ crosswise sheet of paper.
