Quadratic Functions Lesson 4

Lesson 4: Solving Quadratic Equations by Completing the Square

Instructional Outcomes
Maine Learning Results:
2 b, solve quadratic equations graphically, by factoring in cases where factoring is efficient, and
by applying the quadratic formula.
Content learning outcome: Students will understand how to complete the square to solve
quadratic equations.

Literacy Support Strategies and Instruction

Before reading/learning: Digital Triple Entry Vocabulary Journal
Materials: Computers and Triple Entry Vocabulary template, textbook
During reading/learning: Two-Column Notes
Materials: Two-column Notes templates, whiteboard and projector
After reading/learning: Exit Slip
Materials: Exit Slips

Before Reading/Learning (10 minutes)

Content literacy outcome: Students develop understanding of important new vocabulary
Teacher preparation: Students need Triple Entry Vocabulary template on computer
Teacher facilitation: Have students add the new vocabulary words into their chapter vocabulary.
Model the first two of these. Once students have entered the words, invite them to share some
of their memory aids with the class.

During Reading/Learning (40–50 minutes)

Content Literacy outcome: Deepen student understanding of completing the square and build
questioning skills through the use of Two-Column Notes.
Teacher facilitation: Model Two-column Notes again to help remind students of the use in class.
Using the Geogebra applet, have students compete in two teams to practice completing the
square. By projecting the applet onto the whiteboard, students will be able to concentrate on the
task and not on using the program. Use a gradual release model to do this part of the lesson.
Students will watch as the teacher does 1–2 examples and then they will help teacher through
3–4 examples. Then they will work in teams to answer examples and give them to the teacher
to check in the computer. During the paired activity, students will use Two-column Notes to write
down questions and where the answer or an example can be found. This could include a
worked out example of their own. These can then be used to help review for the final
assessment for the chapter.

After Reading/Learning (20–30 minutes)

Literacy outcome: Consolidate learning of completing the square and important vocabulary.

Quadratic Functions Lesson 4

Teacher facilitation: Remind students to enter their own definitions into their vocabulary
templates. Make sure students have entered information into the Two-column Notes with
examples or page numbers. Assign homework for the next class. Students will have time to
begin the assignment during class time so the teacher is available to help.
At the end of the class: Have students complete Exit Slips. Collect Exit Slips and check for any
common misunderstandings.
