Choosing Motor:
Manufacturer: Seimens
Type: D.C. Motor
Operating Voltage: 470 V
Rated Power: 26.8 kW
Rated Speed: 2600 rpm
(Pg. 26 of the Catalogue attached)
𝑛𝑚𝑜𝑡𝑜𝑟 = 2600 𝑟𝑝𝑚
𝑛𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑 = 10 𝑟𝑝𝑚
𝑚 (𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜) = 260: 1
For non-interference, the minimum number of teeth on pinion should be
2𝑘
𝑁𝑃 = (𝑚 + √𝑚2 + (1 + 2𝑚) sin2 𝜑)
(1 + 2𝑚) sin2 𝜑

Putting Pressure angle as 20 degrees and k=1,

𝑁𝑃 = 17.068 ≈ 18 𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑡ℎ
∴ 𝑁𝐺 = 260 × 18 = 4680 𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑡ℎ
Since the number of teeth occurring are far impractical to achieve, a gear train must be used.
Train value ‘e’ can be found out by
𝑛𝐿𝑎𝑠𝑡 10 1
𝑒= = =
𝑛𝐹𝑖𝑟𝑠𝑡 2600 260
Customarily,
𝑖𝑓 1: 100 < 𝑒 ≤ 1: 1000, 𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑 𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒𝑠 = 3

Assuming No idler gears in the assembly, refer to figure below

As a starting point, consider the case of minimum space gearing ratios for each stage
3
𝑚𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 = √260 = 6.38

Rounding up and down to get the value nearest to 260, we get

𝑚1 = 5, 𝑚2 = 9, 𝑚3 = 6 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑚1 . 𝑚2 . 𝑚3 = 270
For the first stage, the minimum number of teeth on pinion:
𝑈𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑚1 = 5
𝑁𝑎 = 15.74 ≈ 16 𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑡ℎ
𝑁𝑏 = 16 × 5 = 80 𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑡ℎ
By table 13-2, using a Coarse Diametral Pitch of 3 teeth/in
𝑁
𝑈𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑃 =
𝑑
𝑑𝑎 = 4 𝑖𝑛
𝑑𝑏 = 20 𝑖𝑛
For the second stage, the minimum number of teeth on pinion:
𝑈𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑚2 = 9
𝑁𝑐 = 16.30 ≈ 17 𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑡ℎ
𝑁𝑏 = 17 × 9 = 153 𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑡ℎ
Since, the number of teeth on gear ‘c’ is a prime number, dividing it by any diametral pitch will
yield a floating number. For the sake of simplicity, let:
𝑁𝑐 = 18 𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑡ℎ
𝑁𝑑 = 162 𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑡ℎ
Using a Coarse Diametral pitch of 6,
𝑑𝑐 = 3 𝑖𝑛
𝑑𝑑 = 27 𝑖𝑛
For third stage
𝑈𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑚3 = 6
𝑁𝑐 = 15.94 ≈ 16 𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑡ℎ
𝑁𝑏 = 16 × 6 = 96 𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑡ℎ
A limiting factor in the choice of diametral pitch lies in the parallel distance between shafts 2
and 3.
The maximum distance between the shafts is:
𝑑2→3 = 1.5 + 13.5 = 15 × 2 = 30 𝑖𝑛
However, since a smaller gear than gear ‘d’ will be employed to further decrease the gearing
ratio, choosing a Coarse Diametral pitch of 4:
𝑑𝑒 = 4 𝑖𝑛
𝑑𝑓 = 24 𝑖𝑛
Recalculating the train value:
16 × 18 × 16 1
𝑒= =
80 × 162 × 96 270
Recalculating the output speed:
1 𝑛𝐿𝑎𝑠𝑡
=
270 2600
𝑛𝐿𝑎𝑠𝑡 = 9.629 𝑟𝑝𝑚
