Webbased Internet Information and Applications
1. Executive Summary:
This report describes the conformance of the www.dyslexia.com website with W3C's
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). The review process is described in
Section 4 below and is based on the W3C's A First Review of Web Accessibility
Evaluation.
Based on this evaluation, the www.dyslexia.com. website is close to meeting the
accessibility standards.
Detailed review results are available in Section 5 below. Resources for followup
study are listed in Section 6 below.
2. Background about Evaluation
Conformance evaluation of web accessibility requires a combination of semi
automated evaluation tools and manual evaluation by the reviewer. The evaluation
results in this report are based on evaluation conducted on the following date(s):
July 1013, 2019. The website may have changed since that time.
3. Web Site Reviewed
The name of the Web site is Dyslexia, the Gift. The purpose of the site is to provide
information on dyslexia and the Davis Dyslexia Association’s (DDAI) methods for
resolving the learning disability aspects of dyslexia. The site provides information
on dyslexia, the organization founders, research, resources, books and newsletters
and how to contact them. The URL for this site is: https://www.dyslexia.com/.
URL's included in review : https://www.dyslexia.com/aboutdyslexia/,
https://www.dyslexia.com/davisdifference/, https://www.dyslexia.com/research/,
https://www.dyslexia.com/resources/, https://www.dyslexia.com/aboutus/ and
https://www.dyslexia.com/contact/. The review was conducted: July 1014, 2019 and
the natural language of the website is English.
4. Review Process
I began my review by using the Section 508 Checker. I found this review
ineffective because the software found error status but not enough credits to tell me
what the errors were. I also used the WebAIM WCAG 2 checklist for additional
information. I then used the Bureau of Internet Accessibility, submitted the website
which told me it was scanning, but I not yet received the final report. I then went to
Easy Checks evaluation tools and ran an assessment through a11y color contrast
accessibility validator that used the using WCAG 2.1 A/AA guidelines. I also used
the W3C guidelines and the web accessibility guidelines. In addition, I ran an
analysis through Web Accessibility by Level Access.
I then ran the PowerMapper automated assessment which provided detailed
information on quality errors, WCAG 20 accessibility issues, browser compatibility
issues, search engine violations, W3C standard validation and HTML 5 issues,
usability and navigation issues and web page resources and images. I obtained the
web accessibility report by level access site after running the analysis of the site.
5. Results and Recommended Actions
This website appears to be close to meeting the following accessibility standards for
web content, user agents and authoring tools. The Web accessibility analysis report listed
the site as being 74% in total compliance. According to the web accessibility analysis, the
site was weak on web content with the use of text and images. The a11y color analysis noted
the site needed improvement with four color contrast issues that need to be addressed with
slight changes in color tones to meet the standard. Images met the standard; however, two
image fields need to have a button and alternative text on several images. The
powermapper analysis showed that one page of the content had 11% of the issues in all
areas in both level A and level AA. My review of the site indicated audio for content
information but the buttons were very small. A PDF printout was available for
information under each section. Under Priority 1, the content would need additional
support with audio and additional links for image maps. There was no media or tables
associated with the site.
The W3C S1.0 guideline standard priority 2 and 3 checkpoints indicated that the
color issues would need to be addressed in order for someone with color deficits to view the
content. The Powermapper analysis indicated several Section 508 and six Level A
violations with alt text, elements without text and alt text duplicating link text. In addition,
there were two Level AA issues regarding text and background colors. Finally, the
WebAIM checklist provided additional guidance on areas of concern with this site which
the 508 Standard would place in the fail category in two areas:
1. Video Content lacked synchronized captioning and the pages included heavy
text with small images.
2. There was insufficient color contrast on several pages,
In order to meet the standards, there are several issues that need to be addressed as
follows:
The developer should include a valid label button for form fields and alternative
text on images. Colors should be labeled and the language of the document indicated.
Brower compatibility issues should be addressed, especially for Android devices. Search
engine violations under Priority 3 for google, bing and yahoo need to be immediately
addressed to avoid penalties for invisible text that is identical background color. There
were 15 HTML violations under WCAG 2.0 A 4.1.1 between Priority 1 and 2 and
usability.gov issues in Priority 2.
Two evaluation tools that could assist with bringing this site up to standard are: (1)
Access Alchemy (https://www.w3.org/WAI/ER/tools/#accessalchemy) and (2)
CommonLook Professional (https://www.w3.org/WAI/ER/tools/#commonlookoffice
professional). Both of these sites provide quick fixes for the site to become Section 508
compliant.
