Little boy needs help

Less than a year ago Jack Tyter was just like any other eight-
year old little boy.
After complaining of a headache, Jack is now fighting for his
life – becoming just one of 300 children in the world who are
diagnosed with a grade 4 glioblastoma multiforme: the most
aggressive form of brain tumour.
A fundraiser to help former Bacchus Marsh residents
Damien and Sonia Tyter is set to be held at the Commercial
Hotel in Ballan this Sunday (July 7), where father Damien
worked as head chef for four-years before the family
relocated to Queensland.
Jack is being treated with 33 doses of radiation therapy, as
well as an oral chemotherapy treatment, and is in hospital
for five-days a week.
Commercial Hotel owner Joc O’Connor decided to help
raise funds for his former employee and his family.
“(Jack) is an 8-year old kid, and to have that put on him and
his family is just no good.” said Mr O’Connor.
“All we can do is a little bit to make it easier for Jack’s journey,
however long it takes.”
Mum Sonia Tyter said that, “Joc and Jill are amazing bosses
and beautiful people, we are very lucky to still have them in
our lives.”
Prizes have been donated from locals and businesses for the
event to auction, as well as a raffle to be held.
Jack’s fundraiser will be held at
the Commerical Hotel in Inglis St,
Ballan on Sunday, 7 July at 2pm.

Big changes continue at stations

Recent bus replacements and

street closures may have caused
agony for some train commuters,
but a blitz at Bacchus Marsh and
Ballan stations has created rapid
progress.
The two-week blitz earlier this
month at both train stations
saw upgrades continue, which
have been under construction
since October 2017 as part of the
Ballarat Line Upgrade.
A new pedestrian overpass at
Bacchus Marsh Station was lifted
into place, with concrete footings
placed onto the platform.
Ballan station saw work continue
on their new pedestrian overpass,
as well as erecting steel supports
for the overpass ramps.
The train track was also
duplicated through the Cowie
and Windle Street level crossings,
with an additional track lifted in
at Stead Street.
Regional Rail Revival Director
Mark Havryluk said, “great
progress was made during the
blitz”, and crews have reached
a milestone of more than one
million hours work since
construction began.
“There is still more construction
to complete and we’ll be keeping
passengers informed about our
progress and any future works
blitzes,” he said.
Crews will continue work on
car park upgrades, with a new
car park at Bacchus Marsh, as
well as construction on the new
platforms and overpasses at both
stations.
Workers will also continue to lay
tracks between Bacchus Marsh
and Maddingley to complete 3km
of track duplication, as well as at
the 4.5km Ballan passing loop.

great benefits from the project,
with much more convenient
and accessible stations and
more reliable services,” said Mr

An expo for YOUth

Recently retired AFL Western Bulldogs
player Tom Boyd will be guest speaker at
the Moorabool Youth Action Group’s (YAG)
youth expo in August.
The physical and emotional toll of
AFL football led Boyd to the decision to
immediately retire from the game.
At just 23-years-old, Boyd decided to finish
his time at AFL level as a premiership player
who recorded 61 games and kicked 50 goals
with the GWS Giants and the Bulldogs.
“My decision to retire now is a reflection
of issues I’ve had over the past five years
both with physical injury and with mental
health, and they have now accumulated to
a point where I just don’t have the desire to
play or the enjoyment of the game I used to
have,” Boyd said in a statement on the club’s
website.
The YOUth Mental Health Matters
Expo, a successful initiative of the State
Government’s ‘Pick My Project’ program,
aims to raise awareness and highlight
the importance of good mental health for
Moorabool’s young people.
YAG provides opportunities for young
people to have a say and advocate on
issues that are important in Moorabool and
comprises of dedicated young people aged
between 12 and 25, supported by Moorabool
Shire Council Youth Services Team.
“Congratulations to the Youth Action Group
for their outstanding work on delivering
this project, and we hope to get as many
young people as possible to go along,” said
Moorabool Mayor Paul Tatchell.
The Youth Action group facilitate several
youth events and forums each year, as well
as consulting with the community on youth
issues.
The importance of good mental health was
identified as important to young people
in Moorabool during consultations for the
Youth Strategy 2018-2021 and previous youth
forums.
The expo will be held on Friday 2 August
2019 at the Bacchus Marsh Town Hall from
1pm to 6pm. Young people aged 12-25 years
are encouraged to attend.

‘Late for work’

Numerous speeding charges were heard
in the Bacchus Marsh Magistrate’s court on
Friday 12 July, one involved a 26-year-old
female.
The court heard Clara Brown was allegedly
travelling 132km/h on the Western Freeway
at Ballan on February 8 this year, exceeding
the speed limit by more than 20km/h.
Prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Simon
Pearce told the court the weather during the
time of the offence was “dry, the traffic was
light, and the weather was fine.”
Brown’s explanation for excessive speed
was that she was “late for work” and “wasn’t
aware of the speed [she] was going at the
time.”
Magistrate Ross Betts fined Brown $250
without conviction.

Audit reveals combustible
product in Moorabool

Cladding may improve the appearance of buildings, but it
may also combust, with deadly consequences.
The outside skin of a building, cladding is used to also
provide thermal insulation and weather resistance.
Two types of cladding may pose a risk for building
occupants, as well as the community more broadly. These
are - Aluminium composite panels or ‘ACP’, and Expanded
polystyrene or ‘EPS’.
The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) is leading a
statewide audit on behalf of the Victorian Government,
which found in Moorabool Shire there are three privately-
owned buildings identified with cladding that may pose a
risk.
But the State Government is tackling the high-risk cladding
problem with an injection of $300 million of a $600 million
package.
“We will establish a world-first program to tackle high-risk
cladding and will fix the buildings most at risk and keep
Victorians safe,” Premier Daniel Andrews said.
The State Labor Government will directly fund half of
the rectification works and will introduce changes to the
building permit levy to raise the other $300 million over the

to recycling

Cleaning up council recycling contracts
and cutting red tape is to help local councils
deliver better more sustainable kerbside
collection services to their communities now
and in the future, so the State Government
is saying.
Member for Melton Steve McGhie said these
changes give councils like Moorabool time
to form partnerships and contract recycling
services across multiple municipalities.
“Putting larger volumes out for contract
will help make the recycling market more
competitive, driving down costs,” he said.
“The exemption also means council save
money in management and procurement
costs by not having to go through the tender
process.”
Moorabool Shire Council CEO Derek
Madden said they have moved from Visy to
SKM as part of the new contract.
“We are going out as a whole region; really
taking a short-term view at this moment
in time, with a view to a more regional
approach (adjoining shires) to the whole
recycling area.
“Basically, we are trying to merge and go
with scale, that will give economies of scale
to the sector and also to the industry to give

Dangerous Waste Stockpiles
Media outlets are reporting that “regional
councils are guilty of adding to dangerous
waste stockpiles, because they send their
recyclables to ‘rogue operator’ SKM.”
Peter Anderson, chief executive of the
Victorian Waste Management Association
told ABC Ballarat councils are trying to
take the cheapest option which isn’t the
most responsible, environmentally.
“We keep using an operator who is storing
the product, not necessarily disposing of it
in the correct manner, who then gets into
trouble because they cannot manage those
stockpiles which then becomes a danger to
other members of the community,” he said.
“Councils should be taking stock of where
their stock is going, once they dispose of it.
That is the chain of responsibility that falls
back on to Council.”
Moorabool Shire Council Mayor Paul
Tatchell said he doesn’t believe it is
council’s fault.
“What Mr Anderson said is totally wrong
and I am not sticking up for SKM or anyone
else, but regional councils put a tender out
and it is very limited to the amount of people
that apply for that tender. In Moorabool we
only had two apply.”
Cr Tatchell said Moorabool does not do it
on price.
“It is 40 per cent price based and 60 per
cent based on the due diligence of the
company. We go and inspect; we have
monthly reports and quarterly meetings
with them.
“We are about 30-years behind the rest of
the world when it comes to recycling and
there is no end market for these products,
nor is there a contingency plan. Regional
councils are paying around $33.03 per
tonne of rubbish that goes in to landfill, that
goes into the coffers of State government
to finance a solution. It should be putting
some of that money back in to the problem
and turn it into an opportunity rather than
a disaster.
“If Mr Anderson does not want councils
to send their recyclables to SKM, where
would he like us to put it?
“He is quite happy to take the moral high
ground and then send it overseas to the
Asian continent; doesn’t it then become a
world problem?
Cr Tatchell said the ‘blame game’ needs
to stop and maybe take a leaf out of the
European book.

Prevention is better than cure when it comes
to frozen water meters.
Western Water is encouraging customers to
place a cover over their meter, the best way to
prevent water freezing inside.
“When meters and pipes are exposed to
very cold temperatures, the water inside
them can freeze, resulting in a property
having no water,” Graham Holt, General
Manager, Customer, Community Relations
and Operations said.
Very cold weather can also cause unprotected
pipes and meters to be damaged.
“When water freezes, it expands, and this
can cause the meter to burst and/or pipes to
split,” said Mr Holt.
“In the unfortunate event of a frozen meter,
you should wait for it to thaw naturally.
Never pour boiling or hot water over a meter
to defrost it, as this can cause it to split”.
While Western Water maintains and
manages the main pipelines and meters,
property owners are reminded they are
responsible for damage that occurs to pipes
on their side of the property.
Western Water suggests a variety of options
for covering water meters, including a large
bucket, cardboard or plastic box, half a tyre,
a hessian bag or an old blanket.
Regardless of the item the customer uses
to cover their meter, they need to ensure it
can be easily removed for meter reading and
maintenance.

Dear Editor,
Chronic pain – pain that doesn’t go away
after the injury or illness has resolved and
lasts at least three months – is arguably
Australia and the world’s fastest growing
medical condition and is a significant issue
affecting Australians.
Living with ongoing pain can lead to
feelings of hopelessness and can all too often
lead to isolation, mental health issues and a
declining ability to effectively manage pain
- an extremely vicious and heart-breaking
cycle. Pain is often invisible, and people face
the additional burden of not being believed.
National Pain Week (22 – 28 July 2019) is an
annual initiative of Chronic Pain Australia,
the voice of Australians living in chronic
pain. It aims to destigmatise the experiences
of people living with chronic pain and
provide an outlet to share their stories and
experiences with the wider community.
This year’s theme is ‘Equal Partners in my
healthcare’ to highlight the need for people
with chronic pain to be included in the
decisions and policies that affect their lives.

Dear Editor,
Your pages have carried several letters
decrying the proposal to create a Wombat
National Park. The gist has been that the
authors like things the way they are, but
they have only been concerned about
restrictions on their recreation – ‘me and my
dog’ - without so much as a passing nod to
the natural environment. They have made no
effort to consider the reasons why VEAC has
mooted a national park. The existing state
forest is not a constant which could stay as it
is but, is in real danger of deteriorating as the
demands and pressures on it increase.
Two underlying sources of pressure are
clear. First is the growth of urban population
as Melbourne expands; that growth has been
happening for many years and will continue
indefinitely. Regardless of a small reduction
in the annual national immigration intake,
the number of people living in Moorabool
shire will double in the next 20-years. So
where 500-people now collect firewood,
there will soon be 1000, and so on. You could
argue to postpone national park status until
the whole situation becomes intolerable to
your recreational visitors, but by then the
area will have lost a lot more of its ecological
value and will probably be unrecoverable.
The Dandenong Ranges was a similar
example where creating a national park was
the best way to protect what was left at the
urban fringe.
The second source of pressure is the
changing climate, in particular hotter
average temperatures and lower rainfall.
These changes are threatening our native
vegetation and wildlife with progressive
extinction, and one essential response in
the short term is to create sanctuaries where
endangered flora and fauna have some hope
of survival. Some letters have claimed that
the bushfire risk becomes greater in national

Dear Editor,
Here is a story about a young man who lost
$20, a boy of 6 who found it, and a lovely
young man, Josh, working at Target in Bac-
chus Marsh who organised the return of the
lost money.
On Thursday 4 July, Jake, aged 6, was shop-
ping with his grandmother, Mara, at the Vil-
lage Centre in Bacchus Marsh. In the corridor
outside the toilets, Jake found a new $20 note
lying on the ground. He picked it up, and
he and Mara hurried to the end of the cor-
ridor hoping to see someone looking for that
money ...... but, no. They went up to the end
of the shops to give the
money to Centre Management, but that of-
fice was closed. A note on the door said to
try the new centre premises right down
near Target, where they had just come from.
They hurried back but couldn’t see any new
centre offices. Then they went in to Target to
see if anybody there knew where the new
management office was. A young Target as-
sistant, Josh, didn’t know anything
about a new office, but said “Oh, a young
fellow was just in here this minute, who had
lost $20 - you must have just passed him,”
but, because he was the only assistant right
there at the time, could not leave the store to
see if he could see the young man who’d lost
the money. So, Jake
and Mara gave Josh the $20 as he said the
young man was going to return to Target.
They left their details and asked to be kept
informed, then continued shopping. A short
time later, Josh called out to them near the
food court and said, “Here’s the fellow who
lost the money”. He was about 14 and was
with his father. Then, Josh gave the $20 back
to Jake and said “Here, you give it to him,
as you were the one who found it”. So, Jake
gave the $20 back to the rightful owner who
thanked him very much, and Jake replied,
“That’s a pleasure” and shook his hand and
that of his father.
The whole little story is a perfect one: an
honest young boy, a thoughtful and profes-
sional young retail assistant who helped the
boy who’d lost the money to find and thank
the 6-year old who found it.

The Victorian Government
will directly fund half of the
works to the tune of $300
million and will introduce

mit levy to raise a further
$300 million over the next
five years.
The Victorian Building
Authority inspected 2227
privately-owned buildings
during a Statewide Cladding
Audit and found 1069 had
combustible cladding. Of
those, seven per cent were
deemed extreme risk, 38 per
cent highest risk, 36 per cent
moderate risk and 19 per
cent low risk.
The Taskforce identified 11
privately owned buildings in
the City of Greater Geelong
with combustible cladding,
eight in Surf Coast Shire,
three in Ballarat and Moora-
bool, two in Bass Coast and
one each in Greater Bendigo,

Two trips to Ballarat in a row have resulted in AWAY losses for the Devils seeing
us slip to third on the ladder – on percentage. Our Ressies and Thirds had
good wins though as did our 19& Unders and B-Grade netballers. On a windy
Carisbrook oval, the Senior Women succumbed to both footy pressure and low
player numbers.
On Sunday we celebrated in style for our 100th Birthday, with our huge Family
Day at Darley Park. There were lots of activities plus food vans, market stalls and

Bacchus Marsh Dance Academy put on a lovely show for a rapturous crowd. We

Devils fail in Finals unlikely for
Sebastopol challenge Cobras after loss

Finals aspirant Darley have
some serious soul-searching
to do following another last
quarter fade out against top
six opposition, falling short
of an in-form Sebastopol by
39-points at Marty Busch
Reserve last Saturday.
The numbers don’t lie.
The Devils have kicked just
two behinds in their last 55
minutes of fourth quarter
football (v East Point and
Sebastopol) and conceded
12 (goals), 5 (behinds) in
the process. Their inability
to counter the challenge
of fellow flag contenders
in recent weeks late in
games gives coach Heath
Scotland every reason to be
concerned.
“I don’t care if Sebastopol
kicked with the breeze in the
final quarter,” he said.
“The game was there to be
won.
“We had our chances in the
first three quarters to put
ourselves in a position to win
but we failed to make the
most of our opportunities
with poor execution.”

The Devils dominated
the third term to arrest a
12-point half time deficit
but were wasteful in front
of goal returning just 2.8 to
level the scores at the final
change. Scotland’s frank
assessment in the aftermath
indicated there was more
to Darley’s failures than
missed opportunity.
“We’ve got too many
passengers,” he said.
“We rely on too few to carry
the load.
“There are too many
individuals out of form, our
best five or six have been
a smoke screen for where
we’re really at especially
against quality opposition.
“While we beat Sunbury
in Round one and Redan
more recently, we’ve been
smacked by the other teams
around us (Melton 30pts,
East Point 22pts, Sebastopol
39pts).
“We have some serious
work ahead of us to be any
part of flag conversation,” he
said.
The Devils coaching group
flipped the magnets to gain
some ascendancy and offset
any predictability but the
‘Burras, who’ve now won
seven of their last eight were
up for the challenge.
“They were better than
us right across the board,”
Scotland said.
“When we went forward,
we couldn’t penetrate their
defence and when they went
forward, they scored too
easily.”

While the jury remains
out on the Devils and their
likelihood of impacting in
September there were some
encouraging signs Scotland
was happy to ‘bank’ moving
forward.
“Tom Evans return was
fantastic,” he said.
“You know what you’re
going to get from him every
time he takes the field.
“Tom brings attitude,
endeavor and defensive
pressure.
“(Luther) Baker, (Shane)
Page, (Trent) Angwin,
(Leigh) Spiteri, Joel Cadman
and the Graham brothers
could all hold their heads
high.”
Unfortunately for Scotland
those better players have
become an all too familiar
constant. The Devils had just
three goal scorers in their six-
goal match return while the
‘Burras had 10, highlighting
an obvious disparity in work
rate and execution.
“Sebastopol are as good a
side as any we’ve played this
year,” Scotland said.
“They’ll give the flag a shot
that’s for sure.”
Darley are expected to
bounce back to the winners
list on Saturday and make it
14 wins on the trot at home
when they meet bottom side
Melton South. If there’s an
opportunity for individuals
to return to form, this game
looms as good as any.

Bacchus Marsh fans will
look back on last Saturday’s
three-point loss to the Bal-
larat Swans at Alfredton
Oval as the game that got
away. However, the result
aligns with a prognosis of
much greater significance
for all inside Cobra land to
digest - no finals.
The Cobras were under-
manned heading into the
game through injury and
questionable unavailibility.
Missing were key players
Jake De Winter (knee), Tom
Brownbridge (leg), Jacob
Chisari (concussion), Nick
Stuhldrier (Vic Country rep
game), Tim Hughes (inj)
and Billy Griffiths (unavail-
able), which was too much
for a Cobras tipping point to
withstand. But with absence
came opportunity. The new
troops rallied, especially in
the first quarter against the
breeze, arguably the Cobras
best opener of the season.
Youngsters Xavier Jenks,

the coaching group, we just
needed more to follow his
lead,” Davey said.
“And if you had have said
to us at the start of the game
that Daniel Veldon would
keep Hooper goalless, we
would have been extremely
confident of getting the
result.”
The Cobras have the bye
this week before an acid test
meeting with Sebastopol
in Round 15 at Maddingley
Park.
“The next 14 days will tell
us a lot about who is with us
and who isn’t,” Davey said.
