Academic Year : 2018-19 Faculty : Mr.D.Rambabu/M.Srinivas Reddy
ASSIGNMENT-II

1.) a) A large vertical plate 4m height is maintained at 60°C and exposed to atmospheric air at
10°C.Calculate the heat transfer if the plate is 10 m wide.
b) Water flows over a flat plate measuring 1m x 1m with a velocity of 2 m/s. The plate is at a
uniform temperature of 90°C and the water temperature is 10°C. Estimate the length of the plate over
which the flow is laminar and rate of heat transfer from the entire plate. Relevant properties can be
taken from data book
c) Water enters a tube of 30mm diameter at a mean flow velocity of 3 cm/s and temperature 50°C.
Calculate the exit temperature of water if the tube is 2 m long and its wall temperature maintained
constant at 90°C
2.) a) A metal clad heating of 8 mm diameter and emissivity 0.9 is horizontally immersed in a water bath.
The surface temperature of the metal is 260˚C, Under steady state boiling conditions. Estimate the heat
dissipation per unit length of heater & minimum heat flux
b)A counter flow heat exchanger is employed to cool 0.55kg/s (cp=2.5kJ/kg˚C) of oil from 115˚C to
40˚C by the use of water. The inlet and outlet temperatures of cooling water are 15˚C and 75˚C. The
overall heat transfer coefficient is expected to be 1450 W/m2˚C. Using NTU method calculate (i)
The mass flow rate of water (ii) The effectiveness of heat exchanger (ii) The surface area
required
c) A steam condenser consisting of a square array of 625 horizontal tubes, each 6 mm in diameter, is
insulated at the exhaust hood of a steam turbine. The tubes are exposed to saturated steam at a
pressure of 15kPa.If the tube surface is maintained at 25˚C calculate (i) heat transfer
coefficient (ii) The rate at which steam is condensed per unit length of the tubes
d)Derive an expression for logarithmic mean temperature difference(LMTD) in the case of counter flow
heat exchanger

3.) a) Determine the shape factor from the base of a cylinder to the curved surface. Also find the shape factor
from curved surface to base and the curved surface to itself.
b)Explain briefly the following
(i) Specular and diffuse reflection
(ii) Reflectivity and Tranmissivity
(iii) Reciprocity rule and Summation rule
(iv) Kirchhoff Law of heat radiation
(v) Wien’s Displacement law
c) Two large parallel planes are 850K and 400 K. Determine the heat exchange per unit area if
(i). The surfaces are black
(ii). If the hot one has emissivity 0.9 and the cooler one 0.5
(iii). If one shield of emissivity 0.1 is inserted between the planes.
