Q1: Why Franz was afraid of going to school that day?
A: The teacher M. Hamel had asked students to prepare for a test on Participles and Franz
even didn’t even know a single word of it so he was not feeling like to go to school that day.
Also Franz was afraid of M Hamel’s cruel iron rule, which he usually kept under his arm and
he was famous as very strict teacher.

Q2: What unusual changes did Franz notice in school that day?
A: As Franz entered in school he noticed the unusual silence as if it was a Sunday morning.
No noise of lesson chanting, no noise of opening and closing of desk drawers. All students
were already in class. Teacher was wearing the special fancy dress which he would usually

Ans :- The name of Saheb is ironic in its meaning to the profession of Saheb. It means “Lord
of Universe” but Saheb was a rag-picker. His name doesn’t suit his profession.

Q2. How is garbage different for the people of Seemapuri?


Ans :- For the people of Seemapuri, garbage has different shades of meaning. For children, It
is wrapped in wonders where they can find a coin or a ten rupee note and they always have
hope of finding more. But for the parents, It is their survival, a daily bread.

Q3.Why was Saheb not happy on getting a job?


Ans: Saheb was not happy on getting a job in tea stall for a salary of Rs.800/- per month as
he lost his freedom. He had to carry the stall owner’s steel canister in place of his bag. He
lost his carefree look He was now no longer his own master.

Q4.Through the years rag picking has acquired the ‘proportion of a fine art’ in
Seemapuri. Justify the statement.
Ans: The means of survival of migrants of Bangladesh in Seemapuri is rag picking. Garbage
to them is gold. Like a fine art that has no end in appealing the sense of beauty the rag
picker’s scrounging the garbage is a never ending process which provide them their daily
bread day after day.

Q5. Why is Firozabad famous?


Ans:- Firozabad is famous for Bangle making. All the families in Firozabad are involved in
same profession. From here, the bangles are exported to all the states in India. It is the center
of India’s glass blowing industry.

Q6.Why don’t the bangle makers of Firozabad organise themselves?


Ans: The bangle makers are trapped in the vicious circle of middlemen and police. If they
organise a co operative they will be hauled up, beaten and dragged to jail by police for doing
something illegal. There is no leader to help them out from their misery. They are the victims
of greed and injustice

Deep Water
Q1. What were the two mis-adventures with Douglas?
Ans. The author and his father once went the beach of California when the former was three
or four. While playing in the surf of the sea, the author was knocked down by the water and
was buried under it. His breath was gone and a deep fear was developed in his mind
The second mis-adventure took place when he was attempting to learn swimming in the
YMCA pool. He was sitting on the side of the pool while waiting for other boys to come.
Unexpectedly a fat boy arrived there, and, seeing Douglas sitting timidly, grabbed him and
threw him onto the deepest part of the pool and left him to drown.
Q2. How did Douglas decide to overcome his fear of water?
After the misadventure at the YMCA Pool, Douglas found his fears for water at an alarming
height. He decided to overcome this fear by getting effective training from a professional
trainer. He hired an instructor, learnt swimming five days in a week, one hour each day. He
leant front strokes, side strokes, paddling, then he even learnt how to exhale under the water
and inhale outside of it. Thus, the instructor built a swimmer in Douglas.
Q3. What made the YMCA pool a safe place to learn swimming?
Ans. The YMCA pool at Yakima was not so deep. At the shallow area it was only three feet
deep and at the deepest end it was nine. Moreover, the bottom of the pool was tiled, its slope
was gradual and the water was clear.

The Rat Trap


1. What was the new line of thought the peddler once came across?
The peddler was once thinking about the rattraps. Suddenly he realized that the whole world
is a rattrap. The riches and luxuries and comforts are the baits. Like rats people allow
themselves to be tempted by these baits and get caught and end up life struggling to get out.
2. How did Crofter welcome peddler?
The Crofter was old, lonely and was in need of someone to talk to. This amazed the peddler
because it was not quite usual that anyone welcomed him so warmly and fed him so lovingly
and behaved with him so friendly.
The way the peddler was welcomed by the crofter was unusual. The crofter generously
served him food and let him stay with him. Besides he went to the extent of sharing his
secrets with the peddler and showed him his great treasure of an amount of thirty Kronors.
3. Why did the Ironmaster invite the peddler his home?
The Ironmaster, the owner of the iron mill, was once in the army. He had a close regimental
friend there. His name was Nils Olof Von Stahle. After his retirement what the Ironmaster
last heard of Von Stahle was that he too had retired from the force. The peddler had the
similar looks of Von Stahle and the Ironmaster took him for his lost friend therefore wanted
him to come to his home.

4. Why did the peddler refuse to go with the Ironmaster?


Initially the peddler was glad to be recognized as the Ironmaster’s friend, the captain, with a
hope that he could get some money from this confused gentleman. But when the Ironmaster
asked him to come home to his house, the peddler refused, suspecting some crazy intentions
behind the Ironmaster’s invitation. He even thought that he could be trapped in a bait by
accepting the invitation.

5. Why did the peddler agree to go with Edla?


Edla Williamson was the Iron master’s daughter. She was not pretty or attractive yet was
compassionate. When she came and asked the peddler to come home, he agreed and went
with her because she seemed friendly and that boosted up the peddler’s confidence. Besides,
probably he didn’t want to be disturbed again.

A captain is far refined than a peddler. When the peddler began to think and behave different
from his usual tramp way, he felt a need for change in his life. Moreover, the newly
awakened man in the peddler could command the old man in him to change, as a captain
commands.

Q1. Who was Raj Kumar Shukla? Why did he want Gandhiji in Champaaran?
Ans. Raj Kumar Shukla was a peasant from Champaran. He was a sharecropper under the
British landlords there. The sharecropping system had become a big trouble for all the
peasants in Champaran and there was no one to help them. Shukla heard from someone that
Gandhiji could solve their problems and therefore wanted Gandhiji in Champaran.
Q2. What made Gandhiji accompany Raj Kumar Shukla to Champaran?
Ans. Gandhiji had no plan to involve himself in any mass movements. But when he heard
about the miseries of the Champaran peasants under the British landlords and that the Indian
lawyers there didn’t do anything honestly for the peasants and having seen the determination
and tenacity of Shukla, Gandhiji decided to accompany him to Champaran.
Q3. How did Gandhi Ji influence the lawyers in Champaran?
Ans :- According to Gandhi ji, the episode of Champaran was not a small thing, When some
influential lawyers like Rajendra Prasad asked Gandhi Ji to leave the matter because they had
to perform much important thing. He influenced them by saying that The episode of
Champaran is a step ahead toward the free India. It will play a big role in the victory of Civil
rule. The cultivation was the major part of the constitution. They needed the support of
peasant system.
Q4. Why was Gandhi Ji ready to accept the refund of 25%?
Ans :- At the time of settlement from the landlords, Gandhi Ji demanded the refund of 50%
for the peasants and the Landlords agree to pay only the 25% amount and Gandhi Ji agreed
to it because the amount of refund was less important. the thing which was important was the
victory.

Q5. Who was Charles Freer Andrews? Why did Gandhiji’s friends want him in
Champaran? Why was Gandhiji against this?
Ans. Charles Freer Andrews was an English man, a close follower of Gandhiji with similar
ideas of a pacifist. He was a social worker in Champaran. When Gandhiji came to
Champaran, Andrews was getting ready to go to his new destination. Gandhiji’s friends
thought of stopping Andrews in Champaran for Gandhiji’s help. But Gandhiji read their
minds and saw that they were depending on a foreigner for India’s freedom. To show them
the meaning of self reliance, Gandhiji refused to ask Andrews to stay with him.

Q6. Why did Gandhi Ji go to Muzzafarpur ?


Gandhi ji wanted to get the complete information about the facts which were related to
Champran, to get that information, he went to Muzzafarpur for meeting J.B Kriplani and
Professor Malkani. J.B Kriplani who was an Arts college professor received him with large
body of students and Gandhi stayed at Professor Malkani’s home which was an extra
ordinary matter of that time.
Q7.What did Gandhi Ji do to remove the social backwardness in Champaran?
Ans : - Gandhiji brought about a great change in the people’s awareness and outlook towards
cleanliness, teaching the women of Champaran the essential lessons of hygiene. Finding the
health conditions very pitiful, Gandhiji hired a doctor for six months and availed his service
for the people. Even though there were limited number of medicines available, Gandhiji
managed to bring about a change in the health of the people. The three medicines which
procured were Castor Oil, Quinine, Sulphur Ointment. Anyone showed a coated tongue was
given castor oil, the person with malaria was given Quinine with castor oil and victim of skin
eruptions got sulphur ointment with castor oil.

Q1. What were the dreams of Sophie? How can you say that she was a day dreamer?
Ans :- Sophie was a dreamer at its chronic stage and was therefore impractical in her
behavior. She used to jump from one to another plan, all beyond her reach. Once she told her
friend Jansie that she would start a boutique. When Jansie commented that it would not be
possible for her, Sophie changed her plan and quickly went on planning to be an actress, a
manager or a fashion designer, all beyond her reach.

Q2. How was Jansie different from Sophie?


Ans:- Jansie was a practical girl who had a sharp contrast to the character of Sophie. She
knew that Sophie is a day dreamer, weaving lot of dreams out of her reach but she knew that
both of them have been ear marked to work in the biscuit factory. She makes Sophie realize
the realities of life but Sophie is lost in her dreams.

Q3. Why was Sophie jealous of Geoff?


Ans :- Sophie was a nonstop speaker. Whatever she talked was impracticality and lie. But
on the other side Geoff was a silent young man. His silence gave him a lustrous personality.
Sophie always wanted to be able to hold her tongue but was never able to do so and this
made her jealous of Geoff’s silence.

Ans :- Sophie was a habitual liar and an endless dreamer. She told lies in the best
convincing way. The latest of her lies was that she had an unexpected meeting with Danny
Casey, the Irish football player. She further told that the great hero was in love with her and

A. Geoff looked around Sophie abruptly with disbelief when he heard her meeting with
Danny Casey, the wonder boy of football. When she gave the footballer’s detailed physical
appearance he believed her. But Sophie’s father turned his head on his thick neck with an
expression of disdain and ridiculed her. He muttered something inaudible and dragged
himself round in his chair called it a wild story.

Last Lesson
The last lesson is set in the days (1870-1871) when France was defeated by Germany. An
order from Berlin came that German language would be taught in the schools of Alsace and
Lorraine.
The order from Berlin added an insult to injury. M Hamel, a school
teacher broke this shocking news to his students. He declared that it was his last lesson in
French, he would leave the place for good. A new master would replace him to teach
German. It aroused patriotic feeling among the students as well as villagers. The villager
elders came to the school to listen to the lesson in French which M. Hamel spoke at a length
about French language he called French as the most beautiful, logical and clearest language
in the world. He expressed his dismay that the people of Alsace were quite indifferent in
learning at French.
At last M.Hamel stood up very pale, in his chair, he was speaking for the last time. He
tried to speak but could not something choked him he turned to the board & wrote as large as
he could. “Viva La France”

Lost Spring
Seemapuri
Q. Describe the life and living of the people at Seemapuri?

Seemapuri is a settlement of more than 10,000 Rag pickers. It is the place on the periphery of
Delhi. It is a heaven for those who live here as squatters who came here from Bangladesh in
1971. They live here without any identity but, they do have ration card which enables them
to buy grain food. It is much important for them than their identity. Children grow up here to
become a partner for survival in Seemapuri, An army of barefoot children appear in the
morning with their plastic bags and disappear by noon. Garbage has a different meaning for
the people of Seemapuri. For children, it is wrapped in wonders and for parents, it is way of
survival. It is their daily bread. Children may find a silver coin or ten rupee in the heaps of
garbage. There is always hope of finding more.
Seemapuri may be on the periphery of Delhi, yet it is mile away from it
metaphorically. It is a little hell for those who live here in structures of mud with roofs of tin
and trapaulin. There is no sewerage, drainage for running water. Hence, the people of
Seemapuri suffer from perpetual poverty.

Firozabad
Firozabad is famous for its bangles. It is the centre of India’s glass blowing industry. Every
other family in Firozabad is engaged in the same profession. They have been welding
glasses and making bangles for all the women in India. Here in Firozabad, The bangle
making is not only confirmed to the adult’s but more than 20,000 children are engaged in
this profession with their families. They work illegally in the glass furnaces with high
temperature. They are exposed to all health hazards. These factories are in stinking lanes, full
with garbage.
Circle of Sahukar, Middlemen and police never let them go out of this poverty because
their Main motive is to earn profit. They do not care about the condition of bangle makers. It
seems that the bangles makers of Firozabad are bounded to poverty and perpetual
exploitation.

Deep water
William-o-Douglas had developed a fear over water when he was just a boy of three or four.
He and his father stood together in the surf. He was knocked down by a wave. At the same
time, he was frightened and developed a permanent fear over water. This fear revived when
he was at the YMCA pool and a big boy of 18 tossed him into the deep end at the pool. He
was nearly drowned. He was gripped with terror but still alive. He planned to jump to the
surface. But without any success, His hands and legs ached and head throbbed he went down
endlessly. Then, all the efforts ceased as he came to senses. He found himself lying beside
the pool and vomiting, William-O-Douglas decided to get an instructor and learnt that How
to swim? He went to the pool and practiced 5 days in a week. The instructor put the belt
around Douglas. A large rope was attached to it so that he could make himself feel safe and
secure, then he taught Douglas how to exhale under the water and inhale outside of it. Thus,
piece by piece, he made an instructor in himself then, he went to Lake Wentworth in New
Hamsphire and had his final dive in lake. At last, when he was ready to take himself as a
perfect swimmer then, he throbbed his head under the water and found himself a little
frightened but soon he revived and said “well Mr. Terror, what do you think? You can do to
me then, if fled and he swam on”.

The Rattrap
Selma Lagerlof draws the character of peddler with sympathy and all respect . He is
presented in the character of a typical vagabond, who moved around selling his small rat
traps. He never hesitated to knock the door of someone to beg for a night. Generally people
were not sympathetic to him but one day he knocked the door of a little cottage. He never
expected that he would receive such a warm hospitality. There, he was surprised to meet an
obliging host. The Crofter was without wife. His sons were abroad. He was happy to get
someone to talk to him in his loneliness. Immediately, he put porridge on the fire and gave
him. He also offered him supper and provided tobacco for his pipe. Finally he got out and
old pack of Cards and played ‘Mjolis’ with his guest until bed time. Then, the host got up &
went to window to take down a leather pouch. He picked out 3 wrinkled ten kronor notes in
the presence of his guest. Then, peddler stole these notes which was morally and ethically a
crime.

Ultimately, Miss Edla Willamson’s deep sympathetic understanding and kindness


raised human essential goodness in peddler. He finally helped himself to be falling in the
world rattrap.

Indigo
Champaran episode was a turning point in Gandhi Ji’s life. Gandhi ji himself accepted it. It
was the first mass movement in India when Gandhi Ji took up the cause of all peasants. He
fought against the injustice of the landlords. They were doing extremely wrong with the poor
share cropper’s. Champaran provided a great challenge opportunity to Gandhi ji. On that
time most of the lord belonged to English landlord. Indigo was the main commercial crop.
The share crops consider themselves as victims. They were forced to plant indigo on 15% at
their holdings. Then a news came that Germany had produced synthetic indigo. And now
Indigo plantation was no more profitable. English landlords had decided to free the share
croppers from the agreement at 15% but for which they demanded compensation but when
the peasants came to know about fact then, they demanded their money back but the English
landlords declined to give that.

Gandhi ji went Bihar to help all peasants in their misery. There was a huge crowd at
arrival of Mahatma Gandhi. The British government was baffled. The landlord agreed to
refund their money back. But they feared that Gandhi ji would demand 100% of the amount.
But, he only demanded 50%. Instead the settlement was done on 25% and Gandhi ji accepted
the proposal, because for them, the money was less important. The thing which was
important was victory.

Going Places
Sophie is a school going girl. She lives in a dreamy world which has distant relation with the
harsh realities of life. She dreams of big and beautiful things beyond her reach and she thinks
of having a boutique. Then, she develops the idea of being an actress. She can be a fashion
designer as well. Here, she is pole apart from her class mate and friend Jansie who is a
realistic and practical girl. She knows that both of them have been ear marked to earn in a
biscuit factory.
Sophie’s romantic and dreamy connection leads her to hero worship. The hero is
her dreams is the young Irish Footballer, Danney Cassey. She developed a romantic
fascination for him. Even, Geoff warned her that Cassey is a celebrity. Many girls like him
and run after him but she doesn’t help to dream about him. She thinks of him all the time.
She sits for hours imagining Danny Cassey coming to her. She knew that he would never
come. On that time, She became sad and helpless. Hence, she lives with all her dreams and
disappointment. They are not real. They are all the creativity of her mind.

The Last Lesson
The Last lesson as name itself suggests that if something would be last in our life then how
impactful it could be in our life. The chapter shows us the importance of being resolute
towards our work and actions, which we often delay to perform in future. A question has
been raised that if we often delay our work then are we going to get time for doing it
worthwhile?
The story also highlights the deep influence of war on a country and the
imposition of slavery on a country and in terms on making them a slave mentally how their
own language is insulted and an another language is imposed. The story has a regretful
narrative of little Franz who was a student of M.Hamel and when he comes to know about
the last lesson in the class which will be given by his teacher M.Hamel on French language,
he could hardly believe that fact. That time, he regretted to delay his lessons when he must
have studied them. The lesson also conveys us the brutality of Franco-German war where
Germans conquered the country and imposed their language on Alsace and Lorraine.

The Lost Spring


The lost spring is an extract by Anees Jung which contains two parts. Both of these parts
present us some kind of child exploitation which is taking place in our country. In the first
part, we are told about the Rag pickers of Seemapuri who cannot help themselves picking
garbage and the second part is the glimpse of bangle makers in Firozabad. In both these
areas, a large number of children are involved in these professions and are making their life
hell.
With both these parts, the writer wants to convey us that how Child Labour in
some places of major cities in India is affecting the efficiency of our nation. The children are
those who must study and draw the future of our nation but the same future exists in dark
when these children are burdened with these works.
However, some of these children do not feel exploited in doing these things.
We can take the example of Saheb-E-Alam from “Sometimes I may find a ten rupee note”
where he is happy on picking garbage. But some do not want to accept it as we can see
Mukesh in Firozabad who wants to become a motor mechanic. The chapter is an appeal that
we should stop these kinds of hurdles in the growth of our country.

Deep Water
Deep water is an autobiography by William Douglas where we come to know that how our
persistent efforts can lead us to success. Many times our past had some bad memories which
have a negative imprint on our life but it does not mean that we will remain bounded to that
phobia and will not try to explore ourselves. If the continuous efforts are made in the
direction. Then, it leads us to the success and helps us to overcome that fear.
As stated in the chapter, we can see that William Douglas was
gripped with a fear of water which overpowered him. The fear was a memory of his
childhood when he went for surfing with his father. It increased, when he again faced
misadventure but the continuous efforts of William Douglas leads him to overcome his fear
in the last.

The Rat Trap


The Rat trap is an extract by Selma Lagerlof where it is presented that how essential
goodness can be awakened in a human being with extreme love and sympathy. The world
which we are talking about in this chapter is considered as a material world which is filled
with luxuries and comforts of life and something is attracting people towards itself. The
people who are attracted towards these things find themselves caught in such a trap. From
where, it is not easy to come outside. The world is a rattrap, is basically an idea from the
mind of peddler who considered himself as a victim in the world. Therefore, he talks ill
about the world. But somehow in the last chapter. He finally helped himself from falling in
that rat trap when he awakened goodness in himself with extreme love and sympathy of Edla
Williamson.

Indigo
The chapter Indigo is a biographical episode form the life of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of
nation. The chapter narrates us the experience of Mahatma Gandhi while the early struggle
for independence led by him.
The chapter contains many important values. Out of which, the first value
which we consider is the grit and determination of the peasant who had come to one of the
congress session for meeting Gandhi. The purpose of meeting was to bring Gandhi to
Champaran but Mahatma denied and delayed his arrival but Rajkumar Shukla was
determined. Therefore, he followed Gandhi everywhere. Now, Mahatma Gandhi was
impressed by the determination of poor peasant and his willingness to help other peasants as
well.
Next theme is the suffering of poor peasants at the hand of
British landlords who were doing injustice with the peasants. It was happening because of
the irrationality of poor peasants and their illiteracy. The last theme is the contribution of
Mahatma Gandhi to remove social backwardness from Champaran.

Going Places
The chapter “Going Places” is an extract from the hands of A.R Barton where we observe
the fantasy of a teenager named Sophie. The chapter starts with lots of fantasies of Sophie
for her future when she became an incurable dreamer while dreaming all those things which
she could not fulfill in her entire life.
The chapter describes us about the problem of most of the teenagers
whose world revolves around such fantasies in which Sophie was wondering. It is a lesson
which tells us that how dreaming beyond reach could become a reason for lots of
disappointments in life. This becomes a major problem when Sophie started taking these
dreams as a reality which resulted a huge disappointment when she realised that it was only a
fantasy of her. The chapter is a precaution for all those who have such fantasies in their life
and do not want to face the reality.

My Mother at Sixty-Six

1. What did the poet realize looking at her mother in the car?
A. When the poet saw her mother’s face ashen like that of a corpse in the car she realised
with pain that her mother has grown old and would die soon.

2.How was the scene outside the moving car different from the inside one?
A. Inside the car the scene was inert and lifeless. The poet’s old mother has dozed off. With
her mouth slightly opened she was looking like a corpse. In contrast the scene outside was
full of life and energy with trees sprinting and children spilling out of their homes.

3.How does the poet describe her mother?


A. The poet compares her sixty-six years old mother with late winter’s moon. In her old age
she has become pale, wan and dim like the late winter’s moon whose journey of life will be
over soon.

4. What is the old familiar ache the poet felt?


A. The childhood fear and pain about the aging and inevitability of death gripped the poet
seeing her mother’s failing health. She realised soon her mother would die and she would be
separated from her forever

An Elementary Classroom In a Slum

A. They look grim. Their faces are pale and lifeless. The torn hair around their pale faces
look like rootless weeds. They look ill, weak, exhausted and depressed due to malnutrition.

A. The poet has expressed his despair through the paper-thin boy who has inherited his
father’s gnarling disease and his hope through the unnoted boy who sits on the last seat and

Tiger dominated his life since birth. Now, Maharaja was ready to continue the campaign of

Ironically, Tiger king death was caused from the 100th tiger. It was a toy

but could not save his life. At last, the astrologer’s prediction came true. The 100 th tiger took
his final revenge upon the king.
The Enemy
Dr. Sadao Hoki was the only son of his father. He was highly influenced by his father. His
education was his father’s foremost concern. For this reason, he had been sent to America at
the age of twenty two to study surgery and medicine. He married Hana in America when he
came to know that she was a Japanese. This shows Sadao’s love for Japan.
Dr. Sadao was first a doctor and then anything else. He and Hana found
a prisoner of war, wounded and bleeding. He at once packed the wound with sea moss.
Sadao was in dilemma. The wounded man was an American. Japan was at war with
America. If, he sheltered a white man He could be arrested. If he handed him over to the
police. The American would certainly die. All Americans were their enemies but still he
brought the man at his home, even washed his wounds.
Dr. Sadao and his obedient wife faced the displeasure of their servants, Yumi
did not want to wash a white man. Old Gardner thought that his master must let the white
man die. Dr. Sadao ignored all these warnings. He heard the call of his profession and
operated the prisoner of war. Dr. Sadao’s heart overflowed with human kindness. Lest, tom
could be arrested. He made certain arrangements for his escape. He put his boat on the shore
with food and extra clothing. But, we should not forget that Sadao was a doctor and for a
doctor, saving a dying man is the foremost priority. It does not matter if the dying man is an
enemy.

The chapter “Should wizard hit mommy” is a fictional plot where we can see the world form
the perspective of a child. In the plot, we study about jack who used to narrate stories to his
daughter Joe for making her sleep. The story of jack was always a mixture of a basic tale
which he always narrated with the names of different animals. He said, there used to live an
animal in a dense forest who was tensed because of a problem which he faced. Then, he went
to the wise old owl who sent him to the wizard. The wizard asked Roger for some penny and
solved the problem of the animal with his magic wand. Then the animal became happy and
went back to his house. But this time, Jack added an unusual ending to the story because Joe

his staff members were out quitted by wily Evans.
All the precautions had been taken for “Evans the break”. The examination
was to be conducted in the cell itself. One of the parson Mr. Mclerry was to invigilate. The
senior officer Jackson and Stephen had made all necessary arrangements. Evans razor, nail
cutter and scissors were taken away. It could be used for injuring Mclerry.
But Evans frustrated all their plans. He could hide a false beard, a pair of
spectacles and some weapons in his cell. Actually, he managed to keep the real Mclerry
securely bound in a broad street with the help of his friends. He had been there since 8:15
am. This meant that real Mclerry never went to prison. It was the friend of Evans who was
impersonalizing Mclerry. This person had a rubber ring which was semi inflated and it had
pig’s blood that was kept by Mclerry with him. He had put down the pigs blood on Evans.
The invigilator declared that the paper was finished and he was escorted by Stephen outside
the prison. When Stephen came to Evans cell, he at once wildly cried for Jackson and raised
an alarm. When, Jackson arrived. He sent Stephen to ring the police about Evans escape
because inside the prison, they could see in injured parson. Officers thought that Evans had
escaped form the prison in the disguise of the invigilator but in actual it was Evans inside the
cell who was in disguise of injured Mclerry.

The lesson “Memories of Childhood” presents autobiographical episodes from the life of two
women. Both of them are from marginalized communities. The people of these communities
are never honoured and respected.
In “The cutting of my long hair” Zitkala describes that how an Indian
girl suffered with extreme indignities. She tries to maintain her identity and her distinct

world from the eyes of a child. Jack is a father who used to tell stories to his daughter to

curiosity of Joe to know the reality.

on his head and made him unconscious. He stole all the money that he could find. Then he
slipped out in the street wearing a costume of old clothes, bandages round his forehead, dark
glasses, false nose, big bushy side-whiskers and a large hat.

Q30. What were Griffin’s original plans before meeting Dr. Kemp? What huge mistake
did Griffin finally realize that he had made throughout?

Ans. Griffin’s invisibility had become known in his country. So he had planned to go to
France, Spain or Algiers. There he thought, a man might be invisible always and yet could
do what he liked. But after seeing Dr. Kemp, he changed his mind. “I was going to clear out
of the country. But now I have altered that plan,” said Griffin to Kemp. Griffin had carried
out his research in secrecy. He didn’t tell about it to anybody not even to his professor. In
fact, he didn’t want anybody to share his credit. But now he realized that he had made a huge
mistake in working on his research all alone. Thus he had wasted not only his time and
strength but also opportunities. “How little a man can do alone! He can rob a little, hurt a
little and that is all,” said Griffin. He further told Kemp that he wanted a helper and a hiding
place.

Q31. Describe the meeting of Mariner with Thomas Marvel .


Ans : - When the mariner was telling Mr. Marvel a story about the invisible man
published in a newspaper. Mr. Marvel kept glancing about him all this time. He
was trying to listen the sound of faint foot falls. Then he bent towards the
mariner, lowered his voice and said “The fact is, I happen to know from private
sources just a thing or two about this invisible man.” He was about to tell the
mariner about the invisible man that he rose stiffly with a clear expression of
pain on his face. In fact the invisible man had gripped him. Marvel told the
mariner that he had developed toothache. He added that the invisible man was a
hoax. “ But it’s in the paper,” said the mariner. “ Hoax all the same,” said
Marvel. “ I know that chap that stated this hoax.” The mariner grew angry over
Marvel’s behaviour and started blaming Marvel for lack of elementary manners.
He said, “Then why did you let me go on and tell you all this damn stuff?” But
Marvel gave no answer and left the place.
Q32. “He is not only invisible. He is mad also who said the words and about whom ?
And why?
And : - Dr Kemp spoke these words about Griffin who had discovered a rare drug that could
make one invisible. And first of all, he himself had taken that drug and had become invisible.
People had come to know about his invisibility and were very much scared of him. But Dr
Kemp’s scientific outlook did not let him believe in the existence of an invisible man. No he
himself had felt the presence of the Invisible Man and had talked to him also. But even then
he was not ready to believe. “Am I dreaming?” he thought. Then he took up the morning
newspaper of that day and read in the ‘Strange Story from Iping’. It recounted all that the
mariner at port Stowe had told Marvel. Then he took up an official paper, the Evening
Gazette. In it he read the news, “An Entire Village Goes Mad’. There was an account of the
vents that took place in Iping in the previous afternoon. “Ran through the streets striking
right and left …… Jaffers insensible ………….Huxter in great pain …….. women ill with
terror……….. Windows smashed. With these all news, it became clear that Griffin was the
person who had done a lot of misdeeds which were committed knowingly or unknowingly.
Q33. How did Griffin feel when he became completely invisible ? Describe in brief his
first experience with invisibility.
Ans : - When Griffin became invisible he felt a wild impulse to jest, to startle people, to clap
men on the back, upset people’s hats and thus revel in his invisibility. But when he came out
into the street among the people, he was pained as people stepped on him or hit him from the
back. He had always to observe his position with the people around him. But the situation
was even grim with the dogs. Being always smart with their nose the dogs barked at his
invisible presence. Besides all this his stark nakedness had to bear the trauma of extremely
freezing chill. And the situation became quite difficult when he had to climb up the steps of a
house to avoid a marching band. His muddy footprints showed up on the newly whitened
steps. Two dirty little boys observed those footprints and shouted loudly. It attracted the
attention of the people towards the ‘ghost prints’. The astonished people started following his
footmarks. Griffin quickly moved into the porch of next house and ran until his feet grew hot
and dry fading the impressions eventually
Q34. Describe the siege of the Kemp’s house.

Kemp receives a letter telling him that the Reign of Terror is beginning and that Kemp
himself will be the first execution for the sake of an example. Kemp decides that he himself
will be the bait and that Griffin will be caught because he will have gone too far. A knock at
the door turns out to be Adye with news that Kemp’s housekeeper-who was carrying notes
for the police-had been attacked and the notes taken from her.

Griffin makes his presence known by smashing windows in Kemp’s house. During the battle
that follows, Adye is shot. Griffin gets inside the house and tries to tell the police to “stand
away” as he is after only Kemp. He swings an ax at them, but one of them manages to strike
him with an iron poker. By this time Kemp has followed his housekeeper through a window
and is nowhere to be found.

Q35. How did Invisible Man die?

Griffin chases Kemp through the town. People begin to join in the chase. When Kemp
realized that the people were chasing Griffin, he stopped running, which allowed the
Invisible Man to catch him. Even though people could not see him, they were able to grab
hold of him and keep him down. The effort was not needed for long as Griffin had been
fatally injured and seemed to have lost a lot of blood. As the town people watched, the effect
of invisibility is gradually reversed, and soon, Griffin, now dead, was visible.

Goodwill Education had organized an Annual function on 1st January 2017 at Delhi Hatt,
Janakpuri. Around 200 students of different classes participated in the function. The chief

Kumble (Famous Cricketer). At first, Mr Arvind came on stage and said, I am very happy on
