3 Elements of S/4HANA Conversion

S/4HANA conversion consists of 3 mandatory logically distinct efforts

• Effort is simlar to other DB migrations a customer may have already done
Database
Migration • No longer required for SoH customers

• Functional impact of application simplification and following the principle of one

Functional
Impact • Many simplification list items can be done on start release as preparation for S/4HANA conversion

• Upgrade-like tasks with SPAU, SPDD and S/4 specific custom code efforts
Custom Code
Impact • Experience shows that SPAU and SPDD efforts often exceed S/4 specific custom code efforts
• S/4 specific custom code efforts are mainly resulting from data model changes
• Recommendation: perform housekeeping (get rid of unused code, delete unused data, …)

Optional • Traditional capabilities are generally available thus it is possible to convert to S/4HANA rather
consumption of technically
innovation • The degree of process change is largely a business decision when planning the conversion project

Motivation and Categories of Custom Code Adaption

SAP S/4HANA related • Adapt custom code which does not comply to simplified SAP S/4HANA data model and
scope. E.g.:
(can be partly done before / • New aggregate and indices-free material inventory table MATDOC in SAP
independently of a SAP S/4 HANA S/4HANA.
conversion)

SAP HANA database related • ABAP custom code migration and recommendations for SAP HANA (SAP note 1912445 )
and this SCN document.
(can be mostly done before / • Apply SQL “golden rules”. Example: it’s bad practice to assume that a DB returns results
independently of a SAP S/4HANA sorted if not explicitly requested (ORDER BY).
conversion)
• Performance optimizations (optional)

Housekeeping tasks • Remove waste / obsolete custom code

• Go back to Standard, remove modifications
(can be done before / independently
of a SAP S/4HANA conversion) • Apply custom code best practices which were valid even before SAP S/4HANA.
• Example: use SAP domains instead of own Z domains copied from SAP domains.

SAP S/4HANA
Simplification List Essentials
• We have ~300 Simplification Items (as of S4 1511 FPS2)
• No system is impacted by all simplifications. Generally approx. 30 - 50 items relevant
• Few items incur bigger impact, many can be adressed as a preparation within the start release
• Simplification list should drive behavior in existing systems (e.g. avoid new implementation of things no
longer strategic in S/4HANA in existing ERPs)

Change of existing functionality: 17%

Current Version: S-List for SAP
~17% • Example: Simplifications of Data Structure (for example in
S/4HANA, on-premise edition 1511

Functionality not available within SAP S/4HANA (with Next Version: S-List for SAP
or without functional equivalent): 59% S/4HANA 1610
• Example:

• FI-AR-CR Credit Management is not available, functional
equivalent is FIN-FSCM-CR
• ITS Services in QM are not available without direct successor
S/4HANA SCN: Further Details for

SAP S/4HANA
System Conversion Approaches

Three approaches are offered:

• Standard approach
using Software update Manager (SUM) with

Downtime
several optimizations

• Downtime Optimized approach

uses SUM as well, and reduces downtime
by moving data conversion partly to uptime

• Customer specific approach

Effort
allows further reduction of downtime based
on a service project (aka nZDT)

Remark: The decision what approach to be chosen depends on

several factors and should be taken after a Readiness Check
together with SAP.

The Landscape Transformation option migrates
data into SAP S/4HANA systems
 Independent from their origin or their purpose

 The various available Landscape transformation Scenarios migrate data

• into newly implemented S/4HANA target systems

• as well as into systems created via system conversion procedure,

• before or after they are handed over to operations

• and independent if they are foreseen for productive use or not.

• can complement the other S/4HANA transition options

• Can be found on SAP S/4HANA Value Assurance Services map as well as within the SAP Activate Roadmap
together with all relevant services/activities of the other transformation scenarios, forming a holistic and
complete transition roadmap.
