AAU3910 Description 1 Overview

1 Overview

For many years, the architecture of base stations changes constantly. Compared with remote
frequency units (RFUs), remote radio units (RRUs) originally proposed by Huawei support
installation close to the antenna, reducing the feeder loss by 3 dB and the transmit power and
increasing the network coverage. It has been a tendency in the telecommunication industry
that the functions of radio frequency (RF) modules are transferred to the antenna. More and
more operators choose the RRU solution for the entire network.
The active antenna system (AAS) module is a new type of radio frequency (RF) module
following the RFU and RRU. Featured by incorporating functions of RRUs and conventional
antennas, AAS modules require less site resources. In addition, each AAS module has
multiple transmit and receive signals. Beams from an AAS module can be adjusted on
different planes. This improves wireless coverage and increases network capacity.
With the rapid development of mobile broadband (MBB), multi-mode and multi-band base
stations will lead the trend. With the complexity of operators' base stations and the number of
RF modules on the base stations increased, the operation costs become more and more
expensive. Simplification of base stations is becoming a trend of building multi-mode and
multi-band networks. To follow this trend, Huawei first introduces the AAS technology and
launches the AAU series products.
AAU3910 is Huawei flagship product to realize the AAS technology. Compared with the
RRU, the AAU3910 adopts the active antenna technology to further incorporate the functions
of RF modules into the antenna.
The AAU3910 can at most support two frequency bands of active antenna, leading
unsurpassed among its competitors.
The AAU3910 can reduce jumper loss by about 0.8 dB. This is achieved by incorporating the
functions of RF modules into the antenna.
Compared with the RRU, the AAU3910 simplifies site installation, reducing the installation
time.
The AAU3910 supports 4-way receive diversity in the uplink, removing the bottleneck of
uplink capacity.
As a type of active antenna product, the AAU3910 can connect to RRUs/RFUs to form new
UMTS, GSM or LTE sites by reconnecting antennas.

NOTE
 The GSM receiver sensitivity of GSM, as recommended in 3GPP TS51.021, is measured at the
antenna connector on condition that the channel rate reaches 13kbit/s and the bit error rate (BER) is
not higher than 0.002. Then, the measurement result minus the antenna gain is the GSM receiver
sensitivity.
 The UMTS receiver sensitivity of UMTS, as recommended in 3GPP TS25.104, is measured at the
antenna connector on condition that the channel rate reaches 12.2 kbit/s and the BER is not higher
than 0.001. Then, the measurement result minus the antenna gain is the UMTS receiver sensitivity.
 The LTE receiver sensitivity of, as recommended in 3GPP TS 36.104, is measured under a 5 MHz
channel bandwidth based on the FRC AC-3 in Annex A.1 (QPSK, R = 1/3, 25RB) standard. Then,
the measurement result minus the antenna gain is the LTE receiver sensitivity.

NOTE
 The output power is 1 dB lesser than the standard power when the AAU3910 is located at a height of
3500 m to 4500 m; and is 2 dB lesser than the standard power when the AAU3910 is located at a
height of 4500 m to 6000 m.
 AAU3910s working in GSM comply with EN 301 502 V9.2.1, and those working in UMTS, LTE,
MSR comply with ETSI EN 301 908 V5.2.1 and 3GPP TS 37.104.
 Assume that the Output Power per UMTS Carrier (W) in Table 2-4 is represented by N x M. N
indicates the number of transmit channels and M indicates the maximum output power of each
transmit channel.
