Rules and Expectations

Communication: The classroom is a safe environment where students are given the opportunity

to learn to the fullest. In this safe environment, communication is key. Students will be

expected to communicate their thoughts, feelings, perspective, opinion, and any pertinent

information regarding homework, absences, tests, and projects to the teacher. By establishing

this open communication system students will not only feel safe and welcomed but they will also

feel a sense of ownership of their education.

Testing:

Follow directions/rules: In the classroom, students will be expected to follow directions at all

times. Directions/rules include:

 Following procedures on assignments

 Following classroom procedures- raising your hand to talk, staying seated unless

otherwise directed, turning homework in to assigned bins, and going to assigned seat.

 Listening to teachers explicit directions

 Being on time

 No food or drink

 Prepared for class- this includes textbooks, writing utensils, and ready to learn.

 Positive attitude

 Students will also be given six minutes in between classes, to use the restroom and to get

their materials for the next class.

 Using the restroom during class or running an errand will require the use of a hall pass.
INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM DISCIPLINE PLAN 3

Respect: In addition, to the other rules, students will be required to respect others not matter

their abilities, disabilities or any other impairment. Students also will be taught that every

student has value and should be treated with the dignity, and respect that they deserve. Students

will also be taught that each student is entitled to their own opinions and perspectives within the

classroom.

Growth Mindset: Students are expected to always come to class with a positive attitude but

more over an “I can mindset”. In that students can accomplish anything that they put their mind

to. A lack of effort will not be tolerated. Students should strive to participate fully in class, and

to give a hundred percent in everything that they do.

Consequences

Absences: For a given semester, students are allotted four absences. Given the nature of

unpredictability, and unplanned situations, and illnesses an allowance of four absences should

sufficient for the semester. In addition, a courtesy email will be required if the student exceeds

the allotted absences.

Tardiness: Late arrival to class will not be tolerated. Any late arrivals results in a strike; once

the student has reached three strikes the students will be given a detention. Detention punishment

includes one hour of: community service, a written assignment, cleaning tasks etc. In a situation

where a student is detained by an activity, teacher or administrator, a note must be provided to

the following teacher explaining the reason why the tardiness occurred.

Late Homework: Late homework is not tolerated. Any late homework will result in the loss of

points. In the occurrence of an absence, students will be required to turn in any homework

assignments once the student has returned to school. If the student has missed a few days make -

up work will be provided for the student along with a time frame of which the work should be

completed.

Unexcused behaviors: Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated. In the event of

unacceptable behavior, depending on the severity of action either a detention will be given or a

suspension.

 Detention: Detentions will automatically given in the occurrence of a severe behavior.

Severe behaviors include: physical fights, vandalism and any other severe behavior in the

teacher’s opinion that requires an immediate detention. Detentions are also given when

students have reached three strikes in any of the stated behaviors: late to class, coming to

class with food or drink, failure to turn in homework, not following procedures, failure to

bring materials to class, disrespectful to teachers or administrators, and verbal outbursts

to students or teachers.

 Suspensions: Suspension are given in the result of continual severe behavior or in the

case of a serious injury. In addition, suspensions are given at the teacher’s and

administrator’s discretion.

Team Encouragement strategies

Team encouragement strategies are just as important and implemented school wide

across all teachers. Through the encouragement of these strategies, not only will learning thrive,

but students will begin to understand more fully the idea behind these concepts. Some important

strategies to integrate include: positivity, respect, and support. By the modeling of these

concepts by the teacher, the hope is that students will learn from the teachers and be able to

apply them in their daily lives.

INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM DISCIPLINE PLAN 5

 Positivity: Teachers should always come to class with a positive attitude. Teachers

should be prepared to embrace the day and to positively support their colleagues and

students in their ambitions. Additionally, positivity is infectious. By maintaining and

supporting positivity not only will successful learning occur but and safe and warm

environment will be better fostered for both the teacher and students.

 Respect: Respect is key for any middle school to be successful. Respect requires the

teacher to show each of their students that he or she is valued, loved, and has great future

in store. Respect is carried out through: treating students with dignity, meaningful

conversations, pushing students in positive directions and taking into consideration ideas,

perspectives and opinions that the student may have. Showing respect also pertains to

relationships with colleagues, administrators, co-teachers, and collaboration. Moreover

on a professional level, teachers have a responsibly treat those that they work with the

utmost respect.

 Support: Teachers should strive to provide support to the students, teachers and

administrators in every aspect. Support includes: helping students with their homework,

providing guidance and direction, and helping students in the midst of a crisis whether

family related or school related. Support regarding colleagues includes helping teachers

with their classes if they are in need of helping, assisting teachers in the use of effective

practices, and being a support network in the case of an emergency or crisis.

Team Procedures

Testing:

 On the day of testing, students should be in their seats by the start of class with the

necessary materials.
INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM DISCIPLINE PLAN 6

 In the event of and absence during the day of a test, students will be required to take the

test when they arrive back to school. Tests will be available in the testing center. The

teacher will provide the proctor of the testing center with the necessary materials needed

for the test.

 Re-taking of tests will also be provided for students in the event of low grades. Re-taking

of tests will also occur in the testing center.

Extra Credit

 In the event of a low grade, students will be given two extra credit opportunities.

 Extra credit opportunities are student choice and must be presented and explained to the

teacher.

 In addition, the teacher will provide guidance and structure to the extra credit project.

 A generic rubric will be provided for the students to follow in the development of their

plan.

 In addition, students are allowed to be as creative as they wish.

Special Help Sessions

 Teachers will be available during recess, after school, and by appointment to assist

students in their studies.

 Students and parents should be involved in the process of getting help when it comes to

appointment sessions.

 During recess and after school, it is the students responsibility to seek the help of their

teachers if they are not understanding a concept.

Parent Conference

 Parent teacher conferences will occur once a semester.

INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM DISCIPLINE PLAN 7

 On a set day, students will be given a half day in order to provide teachers with adequate

time to prepare for the conferences.

 This is a time where the teacher can address behavior needs, additional supports, extra

help and the student’s performance

 Also parents at this time will be given the opportunity express any concerns that they

may have about their child.

 Concerns could include: student’s performance in tests and assignments, student’s

behavior, and the students overall performance.

 Some tips for effective parent - teacher conferences include:

1. Be a good listener

2. Provide some ways in which learning can be better fostered at home

3. By sympathetic

4. Emphasize that communication is important and teamwork will create a

successful learning experience.

5. Allow the parent to express concerns.

6. In anticipation of more concerned parents, ask for advice from colleagues and

have resources and materials ready for the parents.

School Community Plan:

One way that the school can better foster community service and giving back to the

community is through a food and clothing drive. The program will occur during the holiday

season where students and families will be given the opportunity to participate. Additionally

points will be awarded for each item brought in for the food or clothing drive. In the end, the

class with the most points will receive a pizza party for their efforts. In addition, a soup kitchen
INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM DISCIPLINE PLAN 8

field trip will be planned by the students. Students in each class will be put into groups and

required to research and present one soup kitchen in need of help to the class. In the presentation

students will include what this soup kitchen stands for, who the soup kitchen generally feeds,

who started the soup kitchen, where the soup kitchen is located and the activities that the

students will engage in. At the end the presentations, students will vote on the soup kitchen in

need of the most assistance. The goal of this project is to educate students about the different

soup kitchens in the area in need of help as well a to instill a sense of responsibility by having the

students plan the excursion.

Theorist – Lev Vygotsky

In examining this plan, this interdisciplinary team discipline plan is most rooted in Lev

Vygotsky’s theory of constructivism (Brame,2016). Moreover the basis of which this

interdisciplinary plan team discipline plan is rooted in the interpretation of Vygotsky’s theory of

constructivism which incorporates student- led learning or active learning (Brame,2016).

Throughout this model, students engage in group work, independent work, social activities, and

making connections through experiences and knowledge (Brame,2016). Furthermore, through

the use of active learning or student- led learning, Brame (2016) states that this form of learning

promotes inclusion. Student- led learning or active learning is present in the community service

project, extra-credit opportunities, and seeking additional guidance in schoolwork.
