Chapter 1: Introduction

“Going to college is good for the economic competitiveness of the individuals who

constitute the nation.” (2012, Columbia University)

College is one of the most crucial stage to a student’s life. It offers a lot of doors of

opportunities that can shape and even change an individual. By choosing a college or university

with good quality of education, a student may adapt to a greater variety of jobs and careers in their

near future. It may even enhance their specific set of skills that would be essential for the profession

of their choice. However, college is not limited to just doing their course work, but instead, a

student may be able to experience a wide range of activities that are outside their specializations.

In the Philippine setting, the main branches of the prestigious and well-known Universities

are located in its capital city, Manila. With that being said, most aspiring students from all over

the country, take risks and venture on the opportunities offered to them by their dream colleges

and Universities.

“Metro Manila has its own share of urban problems caused by rapid urbanization.” (2005,

De Guzman et. Al). Because of the city’s continuous urban growth, it resulted to an unaccustomed

rate of economic development and increase in population that created a huge demand for mobility.

Transportation is one of the main concern of students especially those living in provinces

and other areas far away from the location of Manila. In order for them to lessen their travel time

from their respective homes to their Universities, students usually opt to live in dormitories that

are near the area. However, there are some students who are willing to take the risks and perils of

traveling long distances just to arrive to their respective colleges.

The Purpose of this study are the following: (1) To determine the most common mode of

transportation utilized by the freshmen students of Far Eastern university. (2) To provide data for

analysis with regards to the trip patterns of students in FEU. (3) To identify the total amount of

money a student spends for transportation.

Statement of the Problem: What are the common trip patterns of the freshmen students in Far

Eastern University?

Scope and Limitations

The study was limited only to the freshmen students of the academic year 2018-2019 in

Far Eastern University. The researchers chose this sample to identify how the first year students

of FEU adapted to the new stage of their academic life with regards to transportation. The

researchers selected students from different institutes to avoid prejudice of results.

The researchers had a difficulty in constructing the questionnaire since they wanted to

ensure the validity of the result of the study. Time was also an obstacle for the researchers in

obtaining the data because students have their own commitments and responsibilities to take care of

such as requirements, studies, and projects. The truthfulness of the response of the students was also a

concern for the researchers because the data gathering tool that was used was a survey questionnaire.
Significance of the Study

1.) To provide the readers information with regards to the advantages and disadvantages of

choosing a mode for travel.

2.) The study could serve as a preliminary research for a much deeper research pertaining to

the trip patterns of college students.

3.) To provide the readers data that show a more efficient mode of transportation depending

on their location and situation.

Chapter 2: Methodology

To ensure the comprehensive nature of the study, the researchers conducted a non-

experimental research design since the research is a descriptive type of study. According to

Shuttleworth (2017), non-experimental research design, specifically descriptive research design

involves observing and describing the behavior of a subject without influencing it in any way. The

goal of the researchers was to give numerical data regarding their trip patterns of freshman students

in a day to day basis during school days. In order to fulfill the needs of this study, the researchers

conducted an online survey to gather information in a larger group of respondents.

The study was conducted in Far Eastern University, Manila. The target respondents were

freshmen students of Far Eastern University from different institutes in the academic year 2018-

2019.

Stratified random sampling was performed. Table 1 shows the distribution of respondents

by institute. It divides a population into subgroups or strata, and random samples are taken, in

proportion to the population, from each of the strata created in order to avoid bias in the study.
