GM 901 Safety Information Operating Instructions

CO Measuring Device

2 Safety Information

2.1 Intended Use

The GM 901 CO Analyzer must only be used to monitor CO concentrations in gas ducts. If
the device is used for any other purpose or changed in any way, also during installation and
assembly, any warranty claims vis-à-vis SICK AG will be rendered invalid.
The person(s) responsible for safety must ensure that all potential risks of danger are rec-
ognized in good time and avoided.

2.2 General Safety Instructions and Protective Measures

If the GM 901 is used as a sensor in conjunction with closed or open-loop control systems,
the operator must ensure that a failure or malfunction on the GM 901 cannot lead to dan-
gerous operating conditions or conditions that could cause serious damage.

2.2.1 Particular Danger Due to Gases

The transmitter and receiver units are directly flanged to the gas-carrying duct. Gas may es-
cape through the flange when the units are removed from the purge-air attachment, partic-
ularly if the system is pressurized.

2.2.2 Purge-Air Failure

The purge air (optional) is used to cool the transmitter and receiver units, and protects the
optical boundary areas from dirt, corrosive flue gases, and high flue-gas temperatures.
• If the purge-air supply fails, the hot, corrosive gases can cause irreparable damage to the
transmitter and receiver units. If the system is pressurized, in particular, the gas can also
enter the purge-air compressor and filter via the purge-air hose, thereby damaging these
system components.
If the purge-air supply fails:
‡ open the quick-release locks on the transmitter and receiver units and remove them.
Seal the flange opening with heat-resistant material (blind flange, option), particularly if
the system is pressurized.
‡ Restore the purge-air supply.
‡ Remount the units and switch them on again.

2.3 Environmental Information

The GM 901 was designed in accordance with certain ecological criteria. The modules can
be easily separated, sorted, and receycled.
All of the materials used in the GM 901 are groundwater-neutral.

6.3 Manual SPAN Test (Optional) for Linearity Check

6.3.1 Test Cells

The following test cells are available (other concentrations on request):
• 250 ppm · m
• 750 ppm · m
• 4 000 ppm · m
• 10 000 ppm · m

6.3.2 Determining the Test Concentration

The test concentration (test cell value) is calculated using the following formula:

TW [ppm · m] = MB [ppm] · x · S[m]

TW = check value
MB = full scale
S = active measuring range
x = position of the check value

Note To convert mg/m3 N to ppm: 1 mg/m3 N = 0.8 ppm

Example:
full scale MB = 1500 ppm
active measuring range S=4m
check value at 70 % of the MB x = 0,7

TW [ppm · m] = MB [ppm] · x · S[m]

TW [ppm · m] = 1500 [ppm] · 0,7 · 4 [m]
TW [ppm · m] = 4200 [ppm · m]

The test cell should have the value 4 200 ppm o m.

Nearest available test cell: 4 000 ppm o m

10.3.4 No Response from Device

‡ Check power supply
‡ Check operating voltage setting
‡ Check fuse in the evaluation unit
‡ Check 24 V -/ 5 V display on the evaluation unit; disconnect the plug-in terminal of the
receiver cable if necessary.
If this display only appears when the connector has been removed, check the cable first.

If no faults on the cable are found, connect the system components one after the other.
1. First connect the cable from the evaluation unit to the receiver
2. Connect the receiver
3. Cable from the receiver to the transmitter
4. Connect the transmitter
If the fault occurs again, it is caused by the component that was connected last. Replace the
component.

10.3.5 Communication Error Between the Evaluation Unit and Receiver

The receiver sends data constantly to the evaluation unit. If the unit does not receive the
data, the data is interrogated automatically.
Check the following connections:
‡ Connection between the evaluation unit and receiver
‡ Cable connection at the plug-in terminal in the evaluation unit
‡ Receiver cable
‡ External connector on the receiver
‡ Internal connector in the receiver
