Subject: RE: Follow up from Global Ties U.S.

Dear Joseph,

Very nice to meet with you yesterday—I am happy to share some information about
Global ties U.S.’ Strategic Dialogue, A Vision of Transatlantic Leadership Through
International Exchange, which will be held from 9:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. on February 8,
2017 at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center (registration and breakfast begin at 8:15 a.m.).

Global Ties U.S. chose to spotlight the Transatlantic relationship in its third Strategic
Dialogue for a number of important reasons. Given recent events that have impacted
the political, social, and economic climates on both sides of the Atlantic, we felt it
extremely timely and relevant to take a deep dive into these trends, and look at how
they might affect not just individual countries and the people within them, but relations
between and among government, business and civil society networks.

The audience will consist of nearly five hundred attendees, including Members of
Congress and key staff, foreign policy experts, international exchange leaders and
public diplomacy practitioners from both the public and private sectors.

Our primary goals for the event include:

1) Reinforcing the importance of the Transatlantic Relationship particularly
during this moment in history.
2) Advancing understanding of the complexities that European countries and
institutions such as the EU face at this time and how the trends towards
increased nationalism and populism both in the U.S. and in Europe are attracting
a new type of leadership.
3) Understanding the changing dynamics of the role of traditional leadership
and the need to engage a wider range of leaders to strengthen the transatlantic
relationship, giving examples of how civil society and private sector leaders are
playing a role in reinforcing diplomatic, economic, cultural ties among nations and
between regions.
4) The role that international exchange programs can and should play going
forward in a very complex environment, to further build networks of leaders who
can reinforce the transatlantic relationship to increase shared security and
prosperity.

Speakers will include both Americans and Europeans and will represent the public and
private sector, offering both breadth and depth of perspective. The Honorable David
O’Sullivan, Ambassador of the European Union to the United States, will deliver a
keynote on the relationship and look to the future. Other invited speakers (whom we
expect confirmations from in the coming two weeks) include Dr. Esther Brimmer,
Professor of International Affairs at GW and incoming CEO of NAFSA, Dr. Karen
Donfried, President of the German Marshall Fund of the United States, Ambassador of
Hungary to the United States (and Fulbright Alumna) Reka Szemerkenyi, Ambassador
of France to the United States Gerard Araud, and Congressional representatives from
both parties, including those on the Congressional International Exchange and Study
Caucus and the U.S. Co-Chair of the Transatlantic Legislators’ Dialogue.

The format is as follows: Welcome, Keynote, Panel 1, Panel 2, Closing/Look-

Ahead. The panel will have three or four speakers, as well as a
moderator. Additionally, there are speaking opportunities to introduce all of these
segments.

The first panel will address the future of strategic alliances and partnerships. We
envision this to include discussion about organizations such as the EU and NATO, but
will also look at non-governmental and civil society groups, including exchange
organizers and implementers. We would like panelists to speak a bit about these
alliances and partnerships as they see them, where they are vulnerable and future
directions for these partnerships in the face of current complexities.

The second panel will look at current trends (working title is “A New Normal”), and will
include topics such as migration and humanitarian crises, changing political landscapes,
and extremism. We would like panelists to speak about these trends on both sides of
the Atlantic, how they impact (both internal and external) relations, and the role of both
leadership and international exchange as we move forward.

The event will close with perspectives on the future (given that the U.S. and many
European countries have recently seen/will see elections in the recent past or near
future, it is quite timely).

I’ve attached our one-pager, and welcome your thoughts and feedback. I am working
on panel composition, so please do let me know if there is one stands out over the
other. Similarly, depending on how the speaker lineup ends up, the final session could
indeed be a session of several shorter (approximately 8 mins each) perspectives for the
future (representing various sectors).

Best,
Jeanne

Joseph;
Thanks again for coming by the office yesterday. It was great to see you and further
discuss next steps in collaboration.

Jeanne will be sending more specific details about the February 8 Strategic Dialogue on
the Transatlantic Partnership event on Capitol Hill along with agenda and talking
points. If you’d like to attend the entire conference that takes place from Feb 9-11 you
are welcome to register here. It would be great networking opportunity. We’d be happy
to make some introductions to you including a meeting with the Center for Public
Diplomacy executive director Jay Wang. You can register here for that and see the
agenda: http://www.cvent.com/events/global-ties-u-s-2017-national-meeting/event-

In terms of dates for 2017 for visits to London and Rome I could do February 27- March
3, March 20-25 or April 18-21. Let me know how those work from your end.

Look forward to seeing you in February!

Best regards,
