Lesson Idea Name: Single Step Equations

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 8th
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE.6.EE.7 Solve real-world and mathematical problems by writing and
solving equations of the form x + p = q and px = q for cases in which p, q and x are all nonnegative rational
numbers.

Technology Standard Addressed: 5c: Students break down problems into component parts, extract key
information, and develop descriptive models to understand complex systems of facilitate problems.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Students will be able to use any resources they want to create an
engaging lesson plan. This includes videos, audio recordings, websites, text, etc. Students will then organize
ideas and present lesson step-by-step using PowerPoint slides. While students are completing this task, I
will walk around classroom to monitor progress.

This assignment allows student to collaborate with each other and promotes social engagement. Along
with this, students are able to develop their own representation of the easiest way to think about and solve
single step equation. This allows students to express their understanding by organizing their ideas on the
concept and presenting them to the class.

Lesson idea implementation: In this activity, students will be put into groups of 4 and given one problem. In
groups they are required to create a lesson plan to teach how to solve single step equations. The given
problem will involve single step equations dealing with multiplication, subtraction, addition, and division.
Each group will go over their particular problem and analyze the best approach to solve it. After correctly
solving the problem without technological help, student are to create a powepoint presentation that
includes any resource (videos, audio recordings, text, simulations, etc) they want that gives step by step
directions explaining what a single step equation is, how to solve it, and the property of equality they used
to solve it.

Once presentations are complete, or time frame has expired, students will present their group lessons to
the class. After each group has presented, a class discussion will be held as formative assessment to check
for understanding.

Reflective Practice: This activity is extremely helpful to student in developing a strong foundational
understanding of what single step equations are and how to solve them. It enforces student autonomy and
working in team settings. Students are provided with interactive ways to approach relevant material from
their own perspective. Activity also allows students to make connections with teacher and identify with
how lessons are created for them.
