I have not had much experience with Functional Behaviour Assessments (FBA), thus taking

Functional Behaviour
Assessments (FBA) are
used to generate
information about what
is happening for an
individual and identify
why a specific behavior is
occurring.
These are done to help
support the child in the
best way possible.
It’s about using positive
reinforcement to help
correct problematic
behavior.
Although I have never
used an FBA, I feel as
though I’ve helped my
students by setting
expectations for the
classroom and school, as
well as reinforce positive
behavior in the
classroom!
How effective are FBAs?
For how long does an
FBA need to be done?
Who administers the
FBA?
Are there different
assessments? How do
they differ and what is
the advantage to each?
Are the results shared
with the families of the
child being assessed?
FBA’s are effective in
helping determine the
cause of behavior before
developing an
intervention. There are
no specific guidelines for
conducting an FBA, thus
each district is left to its
own devices when
interpreting the
guidelines.
It is important to collect
data for a sufficient
period of time to identify
consistencies in the
behavior. Team
members
(multidisciplinary team is
established to provide a
variety of perspectives
about the interfering
behavior that a particular
learner with ASD is
exhibiting) should decide
how long data will be
collected.
There are three specific
functional assessment
methods:
1. Direct
Observation:
Observer records
antecedents,
behaviours and
consequences
2. Informant
Methods:
Interviews and
Questionnaires
3. Functional
Analysis:
Antecedents and
consequences are
manipulated to
understand their
effects

The first two methods

provide correlational
date and only the third
method can truly identify
the function of the
behavior.

It may be unethical to
consider using and FBA
in situations such as self-
harm.

You also need to take

into consideration that
behaviors may be
occurring as a result of
medication of a physical
condition.
