Although florolls were the main product of the

FloRoll Manufacturing Company, the organization also
manufactured the special chains, called holders, that
were used to restrain the florolls before they were
operated. Holders were relatively low cost, but
because they were disposable the volume used,
compared with florolls, was high.

Although the company had been making holders for over five years it had consistently
made a loss on them and the Board was considering whether the product should be
discontinued.

Adrian Elton and Joe Plant agreed to give this a try. A wall was built and John
McCaully took over management of the holder line. It was treated as a separate
strategic product with its own special Operations requirements. Within four
months the product as breaking even and after a year it was making a healthy
profit. Even the floroll line benefited, since Joe Plant could now concentrate on this
strategic product.
