DETAILED LESSON PLAN in MATH 9

June 11, 2019

I. Objectives: At the end of the session, the students should be able:

1. To master the PEMDAS Rule and the Laws of Exponents in solving quadratic equations.
II. Subject Matter:
A. Topic: PEMDAS RULE & LAWS OF EXPONENTS
B. Reference: Grade 9 Learning Module- MATHEMATICS
C. Material: Book, Chalkboard, Math LM
III. Procedures
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Preliminary Activities
Good morning class! Good morning Mrs. Sales.
How are you today? Great Ma’am.
That’s good to hear.
B. Presentation
Last time, you have had the second method of solving
quadratic equations, what is it again? Ma’am completing the square.
That’s right. However, it was observed that still a lot of
you do not know how the Law of Exponents work.
C. Discussion
The Laws of Exponents and the PEMDAS Rule are
interconnected to one another.
Why do you think we need to follow the PEMDAS Rule? Ma’am so that we can solve problems in an
organized manner and of course to come up with
an accurate result.
That’s right. What does PEMDAS stands for? (Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication,
Division, Addition, and Subtraction.)
Excellent! Let’s have an example how this rule works
Say if we have,2(x+2)2+5=0, let’s manipulate first the one
that is inside the parenthesis.
Solution:
(x+2)2 =x2+4x+4
2
2(x +4x+4)+5=0
2x2+8x+8+5 =0
2x2+8x+13 =0
Have you followed the process? Yes Ma’am.
That’s good!
Now, let’s talk about the Laws of Exponents.
We have the addition and subtraction rule. What would
you like to learn first? Ma’am the addition rule.
Okay, then listen.
Addition Rule: When you are multiplying same variables
with different powers or degrees, add the exponents and
simply copy the variable used.
Example:
x(x2)= x3
2x(x2)=2x3
Subtraction Rule: When you are dividing variables raised
to different degrees, just subtract the exponents and same
through with the addition rule, simply copy the same
variable used.
Example:
x2/x=x1
2x3/x=2x2
Have you followed? Yes Ma’am.

D. Generalization
Are there any clarifications? Ma’am what if the exponent of the dividend is
lesser than that of the divisor, do we simply
write the negative exponent?
Very Good question! In that case, we need to reciprocate
the final answer. Okay, Ma’am.
Do you have other questions? None Ma’am.
IV. Evaluation
Identify if these are perfect trinomials or not. If yes,
give its factors.
1. x2 (x+2)=4
2. x2+10x-25(x)=0
3. x2/x4=
4. x2+6(x)=1
5. x2+8x+8=x-1 (Students answered on their notebooks.)

V. Assignment
Essay form:
Why do we need to follow such rules in solving
different problems that comes our way? Make it brief but
substantial, minimum of 3 sentences.
