Experiment No. 3:
Design a Mechatronic System Using Electro-Pneumatic Training System and PLC.

1. Objectives:
1.1) To design and simulate control circuit of simple mechatronics system and
application using Electro-Pneumatic Training System and PLC.

2. Part and Equipments:

2.1) Service unit (P-100)

2.2) On-off valve with manifold (P-104)
2.3) Double-acting cylinder (EP-300)
2.4) 5/2-way double solenoid valve (EP-600)
2.5) Power supply (E-100)
2.6) Electric signals input device (E-260)
2.7) Limit Switch (EP-550)
2.8) Cable set (E-500.0)
2.9) CMP2A OMRON PLC
2.10) Programming Console PR027

3. Procedure:

3.1) Control system with self-holding circuit using PLC.

3.1.1. Using the Omron PLC programming console, programmed the
PLC to execute following ladder diagram.
3.1.2. Write the Mnemonic code for this ladder diagram

2
3.1.3. Run the program and describe how the program works.

3.2) Control the movement of double-acting cylinder using PLC.

3.2.1. Develop the electro-pneumatic circuit via PLC as per Figure 3.1
3.2.2. Connect the START, STOP button and limit switch 1S1 to the
input of your PLC and connect the solenoid S1 and solenoid S2 to
the output of the PLC.
3.2.3. The cylinder will extend forward when START button is pressed
and backward when it touches the limit switch. The process run
continuously and only stops when the STOP button is pressed.

3.2.4. Write down the ladder diagram and mnemonic code for the system
and programmed your PLC to execute the operation.

4. Design Problem:

A double-acting cylinder A is used to press together glued components. Upon

operation of START button, the clamping cylinder extends. Once the fully advanced
position is reached, the cylinder is to remain for a time T = 10 seconds and then
immediately retract to initial position. After complete pressing process the product is
push into packaging bin by double-acting cylinder B.

The limit switch is used to detect the initial position and to detect the fully extend
position off cylinder A and Cylinder B. PLC input/output are listed below.

INPUT ADDRESS OUTPUT ADDRESS

00000 = START BUTTON 01000 = Solenoid 1 (SOL1)
00002 = Limit switch 1(cylinder A) 01002 = Solenoid 2 ( SOL2)
00004 = Limit switch 2(cylinder A) 01004 = Solenoid 3 (SOL3)
00006 = Limit switch 3 (cylinder B) 01006 = Solenoid 4 ( SOL4)
00008 = Limit switch 4 (cylinder B)

Write the PLC program and develop the complete system using electro-pneumatic
and Omron PLC on your work station.
